You can make a black-screen rain stream by sending a video-and-audio feed from an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room, then testing and monitoring the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance does not promise an uninterrupted 24/7 setup, so plan for dropped connections and verify that you have the rights to every sound in the stream.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance also says creators must be at least 16 years old. YouTube live streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
- An encoder workflow that can send video and audio to YouTube. YouTube lists encoder streaming alongside mobile, webcam, and console methods; it does not prescribe one particular encoder or a guaranteed 24-hour configuration.
- A black image and a rain audio track you made or have permission to stream. An existing computer can run an encoder, but YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary.
- A reliable local power and internet connection for a do-it-yourself encoder setup. YouTube does not specify a minimum speed or computer specification for this use case.
Set up the black-screen rain stream
1. Prepare the visual and sound
Use a genuinely black frame if you want the screen dark for sleeping. Set the rain audio to continue for the intended listening period, and listen through the transition between repeats before going live. These are practical production choices, not YouTube requirements. Avoid relying on a short loop with an abrupt restart if it would disturb listeners.

Use your own rain recording or confirm that a third-party license covers livestreaming, the intended territories, duration, monetization, and any required attribution. YouTube’s terms require you to have the necessary rights for live content. YouTube Livestream terms and conditions.
2. Create the live stream and keep its key private
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule the stream, then select the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings into the corresponding encoder fields. The URL is the destination; the key is the credential that identifies your stream. Treat it like a password and do not share or publish it. See Manage live stream settings.
- Configure the encoder to send both the black video and rain audio. YouTube’s cited guidance does not provide a special bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or encoder preset for a black-screen sleep stream; follow the current values and recommendations displayed in Live Control Room and your encoder.
3. Test before making it your sleep stream
- Run a test broadcast first, using public or unlisted visibility as appropriate.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast. Confirm that the image is black, the rain is audible and clean, and the audio does not cut out or restart unexpectedly.
- Open the watch page on another device and listen for a while. This can reveal problems that are less obvious while monitoring the encoder.
- Choose a latency setting in Live Control Room. For a noninteractive sleep stream, low conversational delay is usually less important than a stable playback experience; YouTube cautions that lower latency may increase buffering.
YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Its guidance does not identify a setting that guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation. See YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.

Keep the stream running and recover from problems
A continuous broadcast needs more than a long rain track: the encoder, computer, power, network, and YouTube connection all have to remain functional. Keep an eye on Live Control Room and check the stream from the viewer side for disconnections, silence, or a failed audio loop. Those are sensible operational checks, not a promise from YouTube that the stream will remain online.
- The encoder will not connect: Confirm that you copied the current stream URL and key correctly, that the stream is set up in Live Control Room, and that the channel is eligible to go live.
- Preview has no audio: Check the encoder’s audio source and meters, then listen to the preview and a separate viewer device before relying on the stream.
- Audio stops or restarts abruptly: Inspect the source file and loop behavior; replay the transition during a test before going live again.
- Viewers report buffering: Check the Live Control Room stream health and local network conditions. If the stream is not interactive, consider whether a less aggressive latency setting better suits playback stability.
- YouTube interrupts the stream: Check Live Control Room alerts and review the audio rights and Content ID status. A stream may be interrupted even when you have licensed third-party content if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel.
Rain audio rights, Content ID, and monetization
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn you, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, or take other enforcement action. Licensed audio is not automatically immune: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See Copyright issues with live streams.

For music, YouTube describes copyright-safe choices as public-domain music or music used with the copyright owner’s permission. A label such as “free” does not prevent a Content ID claim; check the actual license and any conditions. These music recommendations do not remove the broader obligation to hold rights for everything in a livestream. See Tips to find safe music.
Do not assume that a black-screen rain stream will qualify for monetization or earn a particular amount. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under that policy. Reused-content review is separate from copyright: permission to use audio alone does not establish monetization eligibility. Original recordings, a thoughtfully made soundscape, or meaningful variation may help demonstrate authorship, but none guarantees approval. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Check before publishing
Review the current status and settings in YouTube Studio before you rely on a long-running broadcast. YouTube’s public guidance does not establish that every account, region, encoder, or network can sustain an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. The test and monitoring steps above help you catch issues; they cannot guarantee uptime.
