Stream runtime and concurrent viewers are not the same as eligible watch time. The full ad-revenue eligibility route also requires 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the rolling last 12 months; reaching those numbers starts a review, not automatic acceptance.
What a 24/7 stream can—and cannot—do for watch hours
YouTube counts qualifying watch time from public long-form videos. For livestreams, YouTube excludes hours from streams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD. So a continuous broadcast is a possible source of eligible watch time, not a shortcut that makes every hour of stream runtime count. Watch hours measure viewers’ qualifying watch time, not how long your broadcast runs or the number of people watching at one moment. A stream lasting 24 hours does not automatically produce 24 watch hours: the total depends on eligible viewing, and YouTube Studio’s Earn area is the relevant place to monitor progress.
Know which YouTube eligibility route you are pursuing

These are separate routes and tiers, not interchangeable ways to describe the 4,000-hour requirement. Check the current status and available application path in YouTube Studio’s Earn area. YouTube describes thresholds and qualifying activity in its YPP overview and monetization-feature eligibility information.

Set up a continuous stream with qualifying watch time in mind
1. Choose a format viewers have a reason to watch
Build the stream around original material and a clear viewer purpose—such as a useful live information channel, a carefully programmed music stream you have the rights to use, or another format that makes sense to remain available. A long schedule does not substitute for content people genuinely want to watch, and a repetitive loop made solely to accumulate views can create monetization-policy risk.
2. Set the live event to public
When you create or configure the livestream, choose public visibility if you intend its replay watch time to count. An unlisted or private event does not meet the public-content condition for the 4,000-hour path. YouTube’s YPP eligibility guidance lists unlisted livestreams among excluded watch-hour sources.

3. Keep the broadcast and channel within policy
Use material you created or have the rights to use, and avoid a channel built from mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative content. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole. Reviewers may consider its main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, the videos responsible for the largest share of watch time, metadata, and About section. The YouTube channel monetization policies describe originality and authenticity expectations, including the policy update dated March 10, 2025.
4. Preserve and verify the replay
After ending or restarting a stream, check that the archive is available as a public VOD. Do not delete it or change it to unlisted if you are relying on its eligible watch time. If the stream is not converted to VOD, YouTube says those livestream hours do not count toward the threshold. Confirm the archive in YouTube Studio rather than assuming that a successful live session was preserved.

5. Track eligibility in YouTube Studio
Open YouTube Studio and select Earn to monitor eligibility and apply when the channel meets the displayed requirements. The 12-month watch-hour period is rolling: older hours age out as time passes, so an old broadcast’s contribution does not remain in the window indefinitely. Do not use the full duration of a stream as a substitute for the Earn-area total.
Watch time that does not count toward the 4,000-hour path
- Unlisted or private videos: their watch time is not eligible for this threshold.
- Deleted videos: watch time from deleted videos is excluded.
- Livestreams not converted to VOD: live hours are excluded if the stream is not archived as a qualifying video.
- Shorts Feed watch time: it does not contribute to the 4,000 public long-form watch-hour route; Shorts have a separate views-based route.
- Ad-campaign watch time: paid campaign watch time does not count toward YPP eligibility. YouTube distinguishes eligible organic viewing from paid campaign watch time.

Why reaching 4,000 hours does not guarantee monetization
Meeting the numerical threshold makes the channel eligible to apply for the relevant YPP route; YouTube then reviews it for compliance with monetization policies and other program requirements. Eligibility is not acceptance. A channel relying on an endless stream should be especially careful that the content is original and authentic rather than a low-value repetitive loop. YouTube’s channel monetization policies describe the review context and what monetizable content should be.
After acceptance, creators may be able to enable Watch Page ads for livestreams after accepting the applicable terms and modules. YouTube also lists live features such as channel memberships and Super Chat or Super Stickers, subject to their requirements. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. YouTube reported that creators who chose automatic live mid-roll ads saw an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not turn them on; that comparison averaged across 207 countries and was measured in January 2024. It is a downstream revenue statistic, not evidence that ads create qualifying watch hours or improve eligibility. See YouTube’s livestream monetization guidance.

Common mistakes and fixes

Keep the stream running: your setup or the cloud
Do it yourself
YouTube’s eligibility rules do not require a particular encoder or streaming product. Its live-stream guidance covers encoder-based setups for creators who need them, but the method of keeping a stream online does not change the public-VOD requirements. Use YouTube’s live streaming help for setup guidance, then verify both the public event and its archived VOD in YouTube Studio. A computer or encoder can help deliver the broadcast, but it cannot generate qualifying watch time by itself.
