A purpose-built 13.3-inch color E Ink display can operate as a computer monitor when it has a video input such as USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode or HDMI. The DASUNG Paperlike 13K, for example, uses a 3200×2400, 300 PPI Kaleido 3 color E Ink panel, accepts USB-C and HDMI, and is documented for Windows and Mac. Connect it with a video-capable cable, select the display in your operating system, and use it as an extended or mirrored screen. Its nominal 37 Hz mode is suitable for reading, coding, writing, documents and browsing, but fast video and animation require more modest expectations.
What you need before connecting a color E Ink monitor
Using a color E Ink panel as a monitor is straightforward only when the computer, cable, input and power arrangement all support the same video standard. Check these items first:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A 13-inch color E Ink monitor with a documented video input. The DASUNG Paperlike 13K has USB-C and HDMI inputs.
- A computer with either a video-capable USB-C port (DisplayPort Alt Mode) or an HDMI output.
- A cable that carries video. For USB-C, both the computer port and the USB-C-to-USB-C cable must support video transmission; a charging-only cable will not work.
- The monitor’s required power connection, following the model’s included documentation.
- Windows, macOS or Linux display controls, depending on your computer. DASUNG documents Windows and Mac compatibility and extended-display mode for Linux.
Do not assume that a USB-C port carries video merely because it has the USB-C shape. The port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode, and the cable must be rated for video. Likewise, a dock or adapter can change the resolution or refresh rate that the monitor receives.

| Specification | Published value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Panel | 13.3-inch Kaleido 3 color E Ink | Provides a color electronic-paper image in a compact monitor format. |
| Native resolution | 3200×2400 | Gives a 4:3 workspace with fine text at the panel’s native setting. |
| Pixel density | 300 PPI | Supports detailed text and document rendering. |
| Nominal high-refresh mode | 37 Hz | Useful for cursor movement, scrolling and moderate motion, but below typical 60 Hz LCD operation. |
| Video inputs | USB-C and HDMI | Allows direct connection from computers with either output. |
| Operating-system support | Windows and Mac | These platforms are listed as compatible by DASUNG. |
| Linux behavior | Extended-display mode documented | Do not expect the same documented feature set as Windows or macOS. |
DASUNG describes the panel as an “Ultra-HD resolution of 3200×2400.” That is manufacturer wording; it should not be read as an independent performance test.
How to connect the display over USB-C
USB-C is the cleanest option when your computer supports DisplayPort Alt Mode because one cable can carry the display signal and, depending on the monitor’s design, may also reduce cable clutter. The video requirement is non-negotiable.
- Check the computer port. Confirm in the computer’s specifications or port markings that the USB-C connector supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or another video-output function. A USB-C connector used only for charging and data cannot drive the monitor.
- Use a video-capable USB-C cable. DASUNG specifically requires both the computer USB-C port and the USB-C-to-USB-C cable to support video transmission. If the monitor remains blank, replace the cable before changing software settings.
- Connect the monitor and provide its required power. Follow the included documentation for the exact power arrangement. Do not assume the computer’s USB-C port supplies every power requirement.
- Select the display mode. In Windows, open Settings, choose System, then Display, and select either Extend these displays or Duplicate these displays. In macOS, open System Settings, choose Displays, then use the arrangement controls to extend or mirror the screen.
- Choose the resolution and refresh rate. Start with 3200×2400 if the computer offers it. In the display’s advanced options, check which refresh rate was negotiated rather than assuming that the nominal 37 Hz mode is active.
If the computer does not detect the display, test the same cable and port with another known video display, then reconnect the E Ink monitor directly rather than through a dock. This isolates whether the problem is the port, cable, adapter or monitor.
How to connect over HDMI
HDMI is useful when the computer has no video-capable USB-C port or when you prefer a conventional display connection. You still need to provide the monitor’s required power separately if the model’s documentation calls for it.
- Connect the HDMI output. Plug the computer’s HDMI output into the monitor’s HDMI input using a suitable HDMI cable.
- Power the monitor. Use the power connection specified for the Paperlike 13K or your exact model.
- Open display settings. Choose extend or mirror in Windows or macOS. On Linux, use the desktop environment’s display panel; DASUNG documents extended-display operation for this model.
- Set a supported mode. Begin at 3200×2400 and inspect the resulting refresh rate.
DASUNG warns that some HDMI systems automatically fall back from 37 Hz to 27 Hz at 3200×2400. A 27 Hz result is therefore a documented connection outcome, not necessarily a defective panel. If you need a different combination of resolution and refresh rate, use only modes that your computer and the monitor both report as supported.

Choosing extend or mirror
Extended desktop
Use an extended desktop when the E Ink panel is a second workspace. You can keep an editor, terminal, document or reference material on the color E Ink screen while the primary display handles applications that need faster motion. This is the most practical arrangement for coding, writing and research because it assigns each display a distinct role.
Mirrored display
Mirroring shows the same image on both screens. It is useful for presenting a document or sharing a static view, but both displays must agree on a compatible resolution and refresh mode. If the computer selects a lower common mode, the E Ink monitor may not run at its native 3200×2400 setting.
Setting the right resolution and refresh rate
Use the panel’s native 3200×2400 resolution whenever the computer supports it. At 300 PPI, that mode is intended to keep text and interface details sharp on a 13.3-inch panel. A non-native mode can make small type appear softer because the operating system has to scale the image.
Refresh rate is a negotiated property of the complete connection: computer output, cable, dock or adapter, input type and selected resolution. The Paperlike 13K has a nominal 37 Hz high-refresh mode, yet DASUNG notes that some HDMI connections select 27 Hz at 3200×2400. Check the actual value shown by Windows, macOS or Linux after connecting.
- For reading and document work, prioritize the native resolution and legible scaling.
- For scrolling and pointer movement, use the highest mode the direct connection reliably negotiates.
- For video or animation, remember that 27 or 37 Hz is materially less fluid than a typical 60 Hz monitor.
What a color E Ink monitor is good for
Reading and PDFs
The 4:3, high-density panel is well suited to pages, PDFs and reference material. A secondary display can keep a specification, paper or documentation visible while the primary monitor runs the active application.

Writing and office work
DASUNG positions the Paperlike 13K for typing, document editing and office or study work. These tasks usually involve text, forms, spreadsheets and occasional scrolling rather than continuous full-screen motion.

Coding
Coding is a sensible use when you value a dedicated text workspace. Put the editor, terminal or documentation on the E Ink display and leave faster-changing previews, video or browser animation on the primary monitor. The 13.3-inch size limits how many panes fit comfortably, so a deliberate single-editor or editor-plus-reference layout is more practical than a dense multi-window arrangement.
Web browsing
Static pages and ordinary scrolling are within the use cases DASUNG lists. Sites dominated by video, animated advertising or rapidly updating dashboards will feel less responsive as the display operates at 37 Hz nominally and may negotiate 27 Hz over some HDMI paths.
What it is not ideal for
A color E Ink monitor should not be treated as a drop-in replacement for a fast LCD or OLED in every task. The documented refresh modes are intended for static or moderate-motion work. Fast video, games, rapid animation and interfaces that redraw continuously can look less fluid, particularly when the connection falls back to 27 Hz. The available evidence establishes the specifications and supported workflows, but not an independently measured latency figure, color-accuracy score or eye-strain result.
Windows, macOS and Linux differences
Windows
Windows supports the usual duplicate and extend choices through Settings → System → Display. After selecting the monitor, choose its native resolution and inspect Advanced display for the negotiated refresh rate.

macOS
macOS provides display arrangement controls in System Settings → Displays. Use the arrangement options to mirror the Mac’s screen or extend the desktop, then verify the selected resolution and refresh rate for the E Ink panel.
Linux
DASUNG documents Linux support as extended-display mode for the Paperlike 13K. That means you should plan around a separate desktop area rather than assume that every mirroring or platform-specific feature available on Windows and macOS is supported.
Sleep, wake and blank-screen recovery
DASUNG lists a manufacturer-specific sleep/wake signaling issue as a possible cause of a picture that does not return after the computer wakes. The documented recovery is simple:
- Wake the computer and wait briefly for the operating system to reinitialize displays.
- Open the display settings to confirm whether the monitor is still listed.
- If the image does not return, disconnect and reconnect the video cable.
- Recheck the selected resolution and refresh rate after the signal returns.
Reconnect the cable before changing multiple settings at once; that preserves a clear diagnosis of whether the failure was a wake handshake rather than a permanent configuration problem.
Common connection problems and fixes
“No signal” over USB-C
- Verify that the computer’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.
- Replace a charging-only cable with a video-capable USB-C-to-USB-C cable.
- Connect directly to the computer instead of through a dock or hub.
- Confirm that the monitor has the required power connection.
The image appears, but the refresh rate is 27 Hz
At 3200×2400, some HDMI systems are documented to fall back to 27 Hz. Check the operating system’s reported mode, try a direct connection, and compare the result with a video-capable USB-C connection if your computer supports one. Do not describe 37 Hz as guaranteed on every port or adapter.

The display is detected at the wrong resolution
Open the operating system’s display settings and select 3200×2400 if it is offered. If it is not listed, remove intermediate adapters, verify the cable, and check whether the computer’s output or dock limits the available modes.
The picture disappears after sleep
Reconnect the video cable as DASUNG recommends for this possible wake-signaling problem, then reselect the display mode if necessary.
Trying to connect an iPhone or iPad
DASUNG says the Paperlike 13K does not support direct connection from iPhone or iPad. Use a supported computer connection instead; do not plan a direct mobile-device setup for this model.

- Assign a fixed role. Keep long-form reading, code, notes or reference documents on the E Ink panel rather than moving rapidly changing windows between screens.
- Use native resolution first. Set 3200×2400, then adjust operating-system scaling so text is readable at the viewing distance.
- Reserve motion-heavy work for the faster display. Put video playback, animated previews and rapidly updating dashboards on the primary monitor.
- Use direct cabling for reliability. A direct USB-C or HDMI link makes it easier to identify whether a dock is causing a mode fallback or detection problem.
- Record the working mode. Note the cable, input, resolution and refresh rate that work reliably so you can restore the setup after a system update or travel.
How to compare another 13-inch electronic-paper monitor
Do not compare monitors solely by diagonal size. Check the exact variant and published documentation for each of these attributes:
- Whether the panel is color or monochrome.
- Native resolution and pixel density.
- Available refresh-rate modes at the native resolution.
- Input types, including HDMI, USB-C and whether USB-C supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.
- Windows, macOS and Linux support, including whether Linux is limited to extended display.
- Front-light, touch, stand and portability features for that exact variant.
- Warranty and regional service terms.
For context, Philips separately documents a 13.3-inch electronic-paper display with HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode/Power Delivery inputs. The cited documentation does not establish that Philips model as a color display, so its input list should not be treated as proof of color capability or a like-for-like alternative.
Bottom line for buyers and existing owners
A 13-inch color E Ink display can be a real computer monitor, not merely a reader accessory. The DASUNG Paperlike 13K offers a documented 3200×2400, 300 PPI color panel with USB-C and HDMI inputs and a nominal 37 Hz mode. It makes the most sense as a reading, writing, coding, document or reference screen. Before buying or installing it, verify video-capable USB-C or HDMI output, use a cable that carries video, provide the specified power, and check the actual negotiated refresh rate—especially over HDMI, where 27 Hz at 3200×2400 is possible.
