How to Use a 0% APR Credit Card for a Big Purchase

A 0% APR purchase offer can let you spread the cost of a large purchase without interest during a stated promotional period—but only when the purchase qualifies and you follow the card’s terms. Before you buy, confirm whether the offer is true 0% APR or deferred interest, work out a payoff amount that clears the promotional balance before its deadline, and check what happens to any balance left afterward. These are U.S. credit-card practices; your card agreement controls the details.

First, check what “0%” means

Offers that sound alike can have different consequences when the promotion ends. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains that a true 0% APR promotion does not add interest to the qualifying purchase during the promotional period. If you still owe part of that purchase when the period ends, interest generally applies to the remaining balance at the rate specified in the agreement.

A “no interest if paid in full” offer may instead use deferred interest. With that arrangement, interest accrues during the promotional period but is waived only if you meet the payoff condition. If you do not pay the promotional balance in full by the deadline, accrued interest can be charged retroactively from the purchase date. Read the offer and account agreement rather than relying on an advertisement’s shorthand. The CFPB’s explanation of zero-interest and deferred-interest offers describes the distinction.

Calculate a payoff amount before you purchase

Find the promotional balance, the date the offer ends, and how many payments you can make before then. Divide the balance by that number of payments to get a basic monthly target. If the purchase costs $1,200 and you plan 12 payments before the promotion ends, for example, the target is $100 per month. Allow room for timing, payment posting, or unexpected expenses rather than aiming to finish on the final day.

Keep making at least the minimum payment shown on each statement, on time. The minimum is usually calculated to keep the account current, not to pay off a promotional purchase before its deadline. The CFPB advises consumers to plan for payments above the minimum when necessary to meet the promotional payoff date. See its consumer guidance on a purchase offer with a 12-month payoff condition.

Check how payments are allocated

If your card has more than one balance, an extra payment may not automatically reduce the promotional balance. Payment-allocation rules can send amounts above the minimum to a balance with a higher APR, subject to applicable rules and the account terms. Review your statement and agreement to see how payments are applied; ask the issuer whether you can direct extra payments to the promotional balance. No matter how you allocate extra money, pay at least the required minimum by its due date. CFPB guidance on promotional purchases explains why payment allocation matters.

Think twice before using the card for other purchases

Carrying a balance can affect the cost of new spending. On most cards, purchases may accrue interest from the transaction date when you carry a balance, and the purchase grace period may depend on paying the entire balance—including the promotional amount—by the due date. That can make unrelated spending more expensive even while a purchase promotion is active. Consider using another payment method for everyday purchases until the promotional balance is cleared. The CFPB explains how credit-card grace periods work.

Compare the complete offer, not just its APR

Before choosing a card or accepting a store-card offer, compare the terms that determine whether the deal fits your purchase and budget. The promotion’s length and eligibility rules matter as much as the advertised rate. A 0% balance-transfer offer is not the same as a 0% purchase offer; a transfer may carry a fee, which applies to the transferred balance rather than being a purchase fee.

  • Eligible transaction: Confirm that the purchase qualifies, including any minimum purchase amount or other restrictions.
  • Promotion period and deadline: Note when the period starts and the exact date by which a deferred-interest balance must be paid in full.
  • Rate after the promotion: Check the purchase APR that applies to any remaining balance after a true 0% period, as well as the rate and consequences stated for deferred-interest offers.
  • Payment rules: Find the minimum-payment method and how payments above the minimum are allocated among balances.
  • Fees: Look for fees tied to the offer, especially a balance-transfer fee if you are considering a transfer.

For a comparison, APR is useful, but it should be considered alongside fees, promotional length, eligibility, and payment rules. Offer details and issuer terms vary; review the current disclosures and your agreement. The CFPB’s overview of deferred-interest promotions and guidance on how these promotions work can help explain the terminology.

What can happen if you miss the payoff deadline?

The result depends on the offer. With true 0% APR, an unpaid amount generally begins accruing interest at the post-promotion rate. With deferred interest, failing to pay the promotional balance in full by the deadline can trigger interest accrued from the purchase date. That can turn a small remainder into a larger bill.

For illustration, the CFPB’s 2017 example assumes a $400 purchase, payments of $25 per month for 12 months, and a 25% rate. In that deferred-interest example, $100 remains unpaid and $65 in accrued interest is added, producing $165 owed. Those are assumptions in a CFPB illustration, not a current card offer or a universal result. The CFPB’s 2017 discussion provides the example.

In a 2024 spotlight, the CFPB reported that about one fifth of deferred-interest promotional balances had retroactively imposed interest, and that the average promotional purchase amount was $637. The spotlight also illustrates a $4,500 furniture purchase with $180 unpaid after a two-year term: at an assumed 31.99% APR, the example produces $1,439.55 in deferred interest. These figures describe the CFPB’s analysis and illustration, not the odds or cost for a particular cardholder or offer. Read the CFPB’s 2024 retail-lending spotlight.

A practical before-you-buy checklist

  1. Read the offer and agreement to identify true 0% APR versus deferred interest.
  2. Confirm that this purchase qualifies and write down the promotion’s end date and post-promotion terms.
  3. Divide the purchase balance by the payments you can make before the deadline; set a recurring payment target above the minimum if needed.
  4. Check how extra payments are allocated if the account has other balances.
  5. Plan how you will handle everyday spending so new purchases do not unexpectedly accrue interest.
  6. Review each statement, confirm payments post, and track the promotional balance until it reaches zero.

As CFPB author Gail Hillebrand put it in 2017: “You are still borrowing money: Remember, even if the interest rate is zero or deferred and you get the deferral, you are still borrowing money that you have to repay.”
