Upload a square or vertical video up to three minutes long through YouTube Studio on a computer or the YouTube app on a phone. Then complete its title, audience and visibility settings, check that you have rights to any protected material, and publish. Those steps make the Short ready to be watched; no upload trick can guarantee it will go viral. YouTube says recommendations depend on viewer personalization and how people respond to each Short, alongside factors such as topic interest, competition and seasonality.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
YouTube’s cited upload instructions allow square or vertical videos up to three minutes long to be uploaded as Shorts. If you have a longer video and are using the YouTube mobile app, the upload flow offers an Edit into a Short option to trim it to three minutes or less.

Upload from a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then Upload videos.
- Choose a square or vertical video that is no longer than three minutes.
- Enter the video details, including an accurate title, and select the correct audience designation.
- Choose the intended visibility and review the copyright checks. Make sure you have permission to use any protected audio or video in a file made elsewhere.
- Publish when the details and settings are ready.
Upload from a phone
- Open the YouTube app and tap Create, then Upload a video.
- Select a square or vertical video. Trim it in the editor if needed. If it is longer than three minutes, choose Edit into a Short and trim it to three minutes or less.
- Continue to the editor if you want to add text, filters, music or other audio.
- Add a title and other details, select the correct made-for-kids audience designation, and choose a privacy setting.
- Tap Upload.
Choose visibility deliberately
Uploading imports a video to YouTube; publishing makes it available according to its visibility setting. A private or unlisted Short can be useful for review, but it is not publicly available in the same way as a public Short. Pick the setting based on who should be able to watch it.
Check audience and rights
Set the made-for-kids designation accurately. Review copyright checks, but do not treat a check as a substitute for clearing rights to protected material you added outside YouTube. The creator is responsible for having permission to use that material.

How do I make my YouTube Shorts go viral?
You cannot reliably engineer or promise virality with a particular title, hashtag, length, upload time or posting streak. YouTube says its system does not favor a particular type of Short. Recommendations are personalized: the system considers whether a viewer chooses to watch, ignores a video or marks it “not interested,” whether they keep watching, and satisfaction signals such as likes and post-watch surveys. A viewer’s history and interests also shape what they may be recommended.
Make the opening and the whole video worth watching
Because viewer choice and continued watching matter, make the subject clear quickly and deliver on the promise of the opening. This is a practical way to respond to the signals YouTube describes, not a guaranteed ranking formula. Compare how viewers respond to different Shorts rather than assuming one editing trick works for every audience.

Use titles and sounds as discovery aids, not guarantees
Search is a distinct discovery route: how well a Short’s metadata matches a search and whether people click and watch can matter. Trends and sounds can also provide ways for viewers to discover a Short, but using them does not ensure reach. Make titles accurate and relevant to the video rather than stuffing them with unrelated terms.
Account for topic interest, competition and seasonality
Reach can vary even when a video’s performance signals look strong. YouTube identifies the changing popularity of a topic, competing Shorts a viewer could watch, and seasonality as factors affecting how many people may see a Short. A dip in impressions does not, by itself, prove that a Short was penalized or that a specific upload setting caused the change.

Post on a schedule you can sustain
YouTube says there is no minimum posting cadence required for Shorts to perform well. Review which videos your own audience enjoys, then choose a schedule you can maintain. Daily posting or a fixed number of hashtags is not an established requirement for reach.
How should I judge a Short’s performance?
First check which view metric you are reading. Since March 31, 2025, a Shorts view counts each time a Short starts or replays, without a minimum watch-time threshold. The former Shorts views measure remains in Analytics as Engaged views, which measures viewers who chose to continue watching. YouTube says YPP eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing continue to use Engaged Shorts views.

That change means raw views are not directly comparable to the former view count. When assessing whether a creative approach is holding attention, look at engaged views alongside viewer-retention context, such as average view duration and average percentage viewed. Also consider the viewed-versus-ignored response and satisfaction signals; no single metric explains every recommendation or reach outcome.
Does posting every day help Shorts go viral?
No daily schedule is required. YouTube states that there is no minimum posting cadence for Shorts to perform well. Use a pace you can sustain and make decisions based on how your audience responds, rather than posting more often solely to satisfy an alleged algorithm rule.
Why did my Short get views but few engaged views?
Since March 31, 2025, a view can register when a Short starts or replays, while an engaged view reflects viewers who chose to continue watching. A gap between the two can therefore indicate that many starts did not turn into continued watching, but the counts alone do not identify why. Check retention and the video’s opening and delivery to understand where viewers stop; compare results with other Shorts aimed at a similar audience.
