1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo upload an image from a URL, the destination must support importing remote files. In Cloudinary, send a publicly reachable HTTP(S) image URL as the file value to its Upload API; Cloudinary fetches the image and stores it in your account. That is different from displaying a link preview or using Cloudinary’s fetch delivery, which serves a remote image without first uploading it as an account asset.
First decide what “upload from a URL” means
A URL can be used in several ways, and the result is not always an uploaded file. Before choosing a method, check what the destination does with the link:
- Remote import: the destination downloads the image and stores its own copy. This is the right workflow when you need an account-owned asset that can be managed or transformed there.
- Remote fetch or delivery: a service retrieves and serves the original from its existing host, sometimes with transformations or caching. This does not necessarily create an uploaded copy in your account.
- Preview: an editor or chat app displays an image associated with a pasted URL. The source remains remote; the app has not necessarily imported the file.
Cloudinary documents both remote upload and fetch delivery, as separate workflows. Discord’s support instructions likewise distinguish pasting an image or GIF link for a preview from uploading an image by dragging a file into chat or selecting one.
Upload a public image URL to Cloudinary
Cloudinary’s documented account-upload method accepts a publicly available HTTP or HTTPS URL as the Upload API’s file source. Cloudinary retrieves the remote file and uploads it into your account. After the upload completes, the asset is available for Cloudinary transformation and delivery. See Cloudinary’s upload parameter documentation and Upload API reference for the current API details and supported authentication methods.

What you need
- A Cloudinary account and its cloud name and API credentials, or a properly configured unsigned upload preset for a client-side upload flow.
- A URL that Cloudinary can reach and that returns image content, not an HTML page, login screen, or error.
- A trusted backend if you are using the API secret or handling protected source credentials.
Backend example: submit a remote URL
The Upload API accepts multipart form data. This Python example uses HTTP Basic Authentication with the Cloudinary API key and secret. Run it in a trusted server-side environment, not in browser code. Replace the placeholders and source URL with your own values.
import requests
cloud_name = "YOUR_CLOUD_NAME"
api_key = "YOUR_API_KEY"
api_secret = "YOUR_API_SECRET"
image_url = "https://example.com/image.jpg"
endpoint = f"https://api.cloudinary.com/v1_1/{cloud_name}/image/upload"
response = requests.post(
endpoint,
data={"file": image_url},
auth=(api_key, api_secret),
timeout=60,
)
response.raise_for_status()
result = response.json()
print(result["secure_url"])
The returned JSON describes the uploaded asset; the example prints its HTTPS delivery URL. Handle non-success responses in your application, and store the returned asset details you need rather than assuming the original source URL is now the destination URL.
Direct API requests and URL encoding
If you call the API directly with a form-encoded request body, URL-encode the remote URL in the file parameter. HTTP libraries that encode form data generally do this for you when given a data dictionary, as in the example above. Avoid manually assembling a form body unless you correctly escape reserved characters in the source URL.
Client-side uploads and secrets
Cloudinary documents restricted unsigned uploads for client-side use. Configure an unsigned upload preset with only the permissions and constraints your application needs. For signed backend requests, keep the API secret on the server: Cloudinary’s Upload API reference says, “Never expose your API secret in public client-side code.” Do not embed it in JavaScript delivered to visitors.

If the remote image itself requires authentication, treat its credentials with the same care. Cloudinary’s Upload API documentation describes sending request headers for protected remote sources. Keep those headers and credentials in trusted server-side code; do not put secrets in a URL or expose them to a browser.
Upload versus fetch delivery
Choose the route based on whether you need a stored copy or simply want to serve an image hosted elsewhere.
| Workflow | What happens | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudinary remote upload | Cloudinary retrieves the remote file and uploads it as an asset in your account. | You need an account-managed asset for Cloudinary transformations and delivery. |
| Cloudinary fetch delivery | Cloudinary retrieves a remote file for delivery; the remote file is not first uploaded through the account-upload workflow. Fetch delivery can include transformation and caching. | You want a delivery layer over an image that remains at its original host. |
| Pasted URL preview | An app may render a preview of the linked image while it remains hosted remotely. | You only need to show a link or its preview in a message or editor. |
Cloudinary fetch URLs may require fetched-URL access to be enabled or a signed URL, depending on environment settings. Its fetch documentation also describes Basic Authentication in a remote URL and cautions against exposing credentials in client-side URLs. For the upload route, see the fetch remote images documentation alongside the Upload API guidance.
Other destinations behave differently
Discord: a link preview is not a file upload
Discord’s support article explains that pasting an image or GIF URL into chat can display it as a link preview. To upload a file to the chat, use the supported file-selection or drag-and-drop method described by Discord. Do not assume that a visible image preview means Discord has stored an uploaded copy.

Shopify: URL import is platform-specific
Shopify’s developer documentation describes fileCreate as a way to create a file from an accessible URL: Shopify downloads, processes, and stores it. The same documentation contrasts this with staged uploads for large files, server-hosted files, or workflows needing more control. This is API guidance for Shopify; it does not establish that every Shopify admin screen, or another platform, behaves the same way. Consult Shopify’s fileCreate documentation for the current mutation and requirements.
How to choose the right method
- Identify the destination. Look for documentation that explicitly says it can import or upload from a remote URL. A text box accepting a link is not proof of remote ingestion.
- Decide whether a stored copy is necessary. If the destination must manage the asset, use its upload/import workflow. If serving the original through a transformation or caching layer is enough, investigate fetch delivery.
- Check the source access. Confirm the URL is reachable by the destination and returns image bytes. Public URLs are the normal documented Cloudinary remote-upload case; a protected origin needs a supported authentication approach.
- Choose authentication safely. Use a signed backend request or a deliberately restricted unsigned preset when appropriate. Keep API secrets and source credentials out of public code and URLs.
- Verify the result. Check the API response or destination’s asset view for successful processing, then use the destination’s returned asset or delivery URL as intended.
Troubleshooting failed URL imports
The URL opens for you but the import fails
Your browser may have cookies, a logged-in session, or network access that the destination does not. Test the URL independently without relying on your logged-in browser state. Confirm it responds with image content and is reachable by the service performing the import. Cloudinary notes that a missing remote asset or a URL that does not return image or video content can cause fetch requests to return 404.
The source requires a login or token
A public URL and a protected URL are different cases. Use only authentication mechanisms the destination documents. For Cloudinary uploads, the API reference documents request headers for protected remote sources; keep credentials in server-side code. If using Cloudinary fetch delivery, check its documented authentication format and access controls rather than exposing credentials in a client-side URL.
Cloudinary fetch is rejected
Check whether fetched-URL access is enabled for the environment or whether your use case requires a signed URL. A valid remote image alone does not guarantee fetch delivery is enabled.

The upload request returns an error or signs the wrong value
Confirm that the request targets the image upload endpoint for your cloud name, uses the configured authentication method, and submits the remote URL as file. For direct form-encoded requests, URL-encode that value. Do not invent a signature format; follow the current Cloudinary API reference for the chosen authentication flow.
The API secret appears in front-end code
Remove it from client-delivered code and rotate it if it may have been exposed. Move signed uploads to a trusted backend, or configure a restricted unsigned preset for an appropriate client-side workflow. Never publish the API secret.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Remote import adds a dependency on the source host: it must be available and serve the expected content when the destination fetches it. A stored upload gives you an asset managed by the destination after successful processing; fetch delivery continues to depend on the remote origin and the destination’s fetch behavior. The sources cited here do not establish a universal speed advantage, reliability percentage, or price for these workflows. Check the destination’s current plan and limits before building around a production volume.
For repeated imports, consider whether the asset needs to be stored, transformed, or merely delivered; whether the source is stable and publicly accessible; and how you will handle retries and failed imports. Avoid retry loops that repeatedly submit a broken or unauthorized source. Record the destination’s response so your application can distinguish a source failure from an authentication or configuration problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upload an image from a URL without downloading it first?
Yes, if the destination supports remote-URL import. Cloudinary’s Upload API accepts a publicly available HTTP(S) image URL as the file source and retrieves it for account upload.
Does pasting an image link upload the image?
Not necessarily. Some apps show a preview while the image remains hosted elsewhere; check the destination’s upload or import documentation.
Can a private image URL be imported?
Only if the destination supports the source’s authentication method. Use protected-source credentials in trusted server-side code, not exposed client-side URLs.
