To upload an existing Terraria world, stop the server, preserve its current world, copy your .wld file into the server’s Worlds directory, point the server startup command or configuration at that exact file, and restart. Confirm the expected world name and progression before deleting the old copy.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The world’s
.wldfile from the computer where it was created or last played. - Access to the server’s files, either through a local shell, FTP/SFTP, or a hosting-panel file manager.
- Permission to stop and start the Terraria service.
- The server’s Worlds directory and, if it uses a configuration file, the startup configuration or command-line arguments.
A Terraria world is a file, not a folder. The main save ends in .wld. You may also see a backup with the same name followed by .bak. Do not rename a backup to the main filename until you have deliberately decided to restore it.
Find the correct .wld file
Choose the file from the computer that contains the world you want the server to load. If several worlds have similar names, sort by modification date and open the game’s world list to confirm the intended name before copying anything.

Windows
Local Terraria worlds are normally stored at:
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsMy GamesTerrariaWorlds
Paste that path into File Explorer’s address bar. Copy the complete .wld file, including its extension. Keep the original on the Windows computer until the server has been checked.
Linux
The official dedicated-server instructions list this default location for worlds that the server finds:

The tilde represents the home directory of the account running the server. A different service account can therefore have a different home directory. Check which account launches Terraria before assuming that a world in another user’s home directory will be visible.
macOS
The documented macOS save location is:
~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Worlds
In Finder, use Go > Go to Folder… and paste the path, or navigate there from Terminal. Copy the .wld file rather than the entire Terraria profile unless you intentionally need other local data.
Stop the server and preserve its current world
Stop the Terraria service before uploading or replacing a save. A running server can continue writing the old world while you copy files, leaving you with an incomplete or newly overwritten save.

- Use the server console’s normal stop command, the hosting panel’s Stop control, or your service manager.
- Wait until the process has fully exited. A panel should show the service as stopped; on a shell, confirm that the server process is no longer running.
- Locate the server’s existing world file in its Worlds directory.
- Copy or download that file to a separate backup location. Preserve any existing
.wld.bakfile as well. - Give the backup a date-and-time name if you keep several copies, but leave the server’s working filename unchanged until the replacement is ready.
These retained files are your rollback point if the uploaded world is not the one you expected or the server does not start correctly.

Upload the world to a managed hosting panel
Managed hosts do not all use the same directory layout. The panel’s file manager normally opens at the server root or shows a Worlds directory directly; use that location rather than guessing a path from a desktop installation.
- Open the panel for the Terraria server and choose Stop.
- Open File Manager, or connect with the FTP/SFTP credentials supplied by the host.
- Open the server’s Worlds directory. If the panel has a dedicated world-upload control, use the directory and file-name guidance shown there.
- Upload the selected
.wldfile. Wait for the transfer to finish before closing the browser or SFTP client. - Check that the uploaded name ends in exactly
.wld. A file accidentally saved asMyWorld.wld.txt, or a name with a second extension, will not be selected as the intended world. - Return to the server’s startup or world settings. Select the uploaded world by its displayed world name, or enter the exact filename if the panel asks for one.
- Save the setting, then start the server.
Some panels use a world-name field that overrides a hand-edited configuration file. If your file is present but the server still loads another world, inspect the panel’s startup setting before changing files again.
Upload the world on a self-hosted server
With a self-hosted installation, you generally have direct filesystem and configuration access. The exact server root depends on how Terraria was installed, so use the directory configured for that instance rather than assuming the location of your desktop world.
Using a local shell
- Stop the service and make the backup described above.
- Copy the source
.wldfile into the server’s Worlds directory. If the server uses the documented Linux default, that directory is~/.local/share/Terraria/Worlds/for the account that runs it. - Confirm that the service account can read the uploaded file. The file must remain a regular file with its
.wldextension. - Record the full path, including the filename and extension, for the startup configuration.
Using FTP or SFTP
- Connect to the host with the account that has access to the Terraria installation.
- Browse to the server’s Worlds directory.
- Upload the file in binary mode if your client asks for a transfer mode.
- Refresh the remote listing and verify the complete filename and file size before configuring the server.
SFTP is preferable when it is available because it transfers through an encrypted connection. The important requirement is that the finished file is in the directory the running server actually scans.

Tell the dedicated server which world to load
The Terraria dedicated server supports a -world command-line parameter. The official command-line description defines it as loading a world and automatically starting the server:
-world <file path>
Replace the placeholder with the full path to the uploaded .wld file in the startup command or panel argument field. For example:
-world /srv/terraria/Worlds/MyWorld.wld
Use the actual path on your system. On Linux, capitalization matters; myworld.wld and MyWorld.wld can be different filenames. If the path contains spaces, quote it according to the shell or panel’s argument rules.
Configuration-file settings
A server configuration can define both the storage directory and the selected world. The relevant lines are:
worldpath=/srv/terraria/Worlds
world=/srv/terraria/Worlds/MyWorld.wld
worldpath identifies the directory where world files are stored. world identifies the exact .wld file to load. Replace both example paths with the real server path; do not leave a desktop computer’s Windows or macOS path in a Linux server configuration.

If a panel generates the configuration at startup, edit the panel’s world or startup field instead of changing a generated file that will be overwritten on the next restart. After saving, reopen the setting and verify that the complete filename is still present.
Start the server and verify the upload
Start the service only after the file is in place and the selected path has been saved. Verification should happen before you remove or overwrite the preserved server copy.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-hosted versus managed hosting
The upload operation is the same in principle, but administration differs substantially.
| Decision point | Self-hosted server | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| File access | Local filesystem, shell, or your own FTP/SFTP service | Web file manager or the provider’s FTP/SFTP credentials |
| Configuration and paths | Direct control over startup arguments, config files, and directories | Panel fields may abstract paths or regenerate configuration |
| Backup responsibility | You create, store, and test backups | You still need a copy of important worlds; the provider’s backup features and retention vary |
| Restart access | Service manager, shell, or local console | Panel start and stop controls |
| Support | You diagnose permissions, paths, and service failures | Provider support may help with panel access and service operation |
Choose self-hosting when direct filesystem and configuration control are important. A managed service reduces routine server administration, but its panel determines how you select the world and where uploaded files belong.
Best Value
Troubleshoot a world that does not appear or load
The file is missing from the panel’s world list
- Refresh the file manager and confirm the upload completed.
- Check that the filename ends in
.wld, not.wld.txtor another second extension. - Make sure the file is inside the panel’s actual Worlds directory, not a similarly named backup or temporary folder.
- If the panel has a separate world-name or startup selector, choose the uploaded file there and save the setting.
The server starts a new world
- Stop the server before making another change.
- Compare the configured
worldvalue or-worldargument with the uploaded filename character for character. - Use the full path to the file, including
.wld. - Check whether the hosting panel’s startup setting overrides the configuration file.
The server reports that it cannot read the world
- Confirm that the file exists at the exact path used by the running server account.
- Check that the account running Terraria has read access to the file and its parent directories.
- On Linux, check capitalization and punctuation in every directory and filename component.
- Verify that the transfer finished and that the remote file is not a zero-byte or partial upload.
The world loads, but recent progress is absent
- Compare the server’s loaded world with the source computer’s expected filename and modification date.
- Check whether you uploaded an older copy while the desktop game had newer changes.
- Confirm that the startup setting is not selecting another file with a similar name.
- Stop the server before replacing the file again, then repeat the backup and upload process.
The server will not start after changing the setting
Stop attempting to join while the service is failing. Recheck the path syntax, remove accidental extra characters from the startup argument, and verify that the configured file exists. If the new world remains unusable, restore the preserved server world and its previous startup setting, then start the service to return to the known-good state.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Moving a world between Windows, macOS, and Linux
The world file itself is the portable part of this process; the directory path is platform-specific. A file copied from Windows does not retain a valid Windows path when it is placed on Linux, and a macOS path is not valid in a Windows panel.
- Copy the source
.wldfile from the platform-specific location. - Upload it to the destination server’s Worlds directory.
- Change the destination startup argument or configuration to the destination path.
- Use the destination platform’s filename rules and confirm that the server account can read the file.
- Start and verify the world before treating the transfer as complete.
Do not copy only a shortcut or a file-manager link. The destination needs the actual world file.
Keeping the transfer safe after it works
Keep at least one dated copy of the pre-transfer server world and the source .wld until players have confirmed that the replacement behaves normally. If you operate the server regularly, include the Worlds directory in a recurring backup routine and periodically test that a saved copy can be uploaded and selected. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption, not a verified recovery option.
