Short answer: a normal RimWorld single-player save is not the same thing as a RimWorld Together world and is not supported by the transfer procedure documented by the cited host guides. The documented process applies to a world that was already created and played through RimWorld Together, then needs to be moved to another RimWorld Together server.
Before touching any files, identify which kind of save you have, make a backup, confirm the destination host’s instructions, and check that the server uses the same mod setup. If you mean an ordinary offline RimWorld save, the sources below do not establish a verified conversion or import path.

First, identify the save you actually have
The word “singleplayer” causes confusion here. RimWorld Together can be played with one person connected, but that does not turn an ordinary offline RimWorld save into a RimWorld Together server world. The transfer guides cited for this task describe moving files from an existing RimWorld Together installation or server.
| Save situation | What the available documentation supports | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary RimWorld single-player save created from the normal game menu | The documented host procedure does not support it. Shockbyte’s guide, dated March 11, 2026, states: “Only saves from an existing RimWorld Together server can be transferred. Standard single player RimWorld saves are not compatible.” | Do not upload the file expecting a conversion. Ask the RimWorld Together maintainers whether a current, supported importer exists. |
| A world already created through RimWorld Together, even if you played it alone | Host-specific transfer guides document moving that multiplayer world. | Use the instructions for your actual host, with a backup and the destination server stopped before replacing data. |
The distinction is also reflected in the RimWorld Together server-creation guide: the first player who joins a new server sets up its world, and the project recommends generating that world with the mods you intend to use. That describes creating a Together world, not importing a conventional local save.

Can a standard RimWorld single-player save be uploaded?
Not by the transfer method established in the current host documentation. Shockbyte explicitly limits its process to saves from an existing RimWorld Together server and excludes standard single-player RimWorld saves (Shockbyte guide, March 11, 2026).
A normal save file may load in the RimWorld desktop game, but that does not prove that the Together server can read its world data, player state, mod metadata, or multiplayer-specific files. Simply copying a file into a folder named Saves is therefore not a verified conversion. The sources available here do not document an official importer, a supported conversion utility, or a guaranteed workaround.

If your goal is to preserve an offline colony, keep the original save untouched and contact the RimWorld Together maintainers through the project’s current support channels to ask whether a supported importer exists for your game and project versions. Do not present a file copy as an import solution.
What you need before moving an existing RimWorld Together world
- The original Together world: Confirm that the save was created and played through RimWorld Together rather than only through the standard RimWorld client.
- Access to both sides: You need the files from the source installation or server and file-management access to the destination host.
- A destination server that is stopped: Shockbyte and MintServers explicitly require stopping the destination before uploading or replacing save data. ZAP-Hosting’s FTP workflow should likewise be performed according to its current instructions rather than while the server is writing the same files.
- A backup: The RimWorld Together configuration documentation describes automatic backups, including a configured interval and a backup at server launch. Verify how backups work on your particular host before changing files; a project’s configuration behavior and a host panel’s backup controls are not necessarily identical (Server Configuration).
- Matching mods: The project recommends creating a world with the intended mods, and ZAP-Hosting warns that moving a world between servers with different mods can cause gameplay issues (Creating a Server; ZAP-Hosting save-game guide).
- Enough upload time and bandwidth: The project repository calls out network bandwidth as a consideration but does not state a quantified minimum speed. Do not rely on an invented speed, file-size limit, or hardware minimum (RimWorld Together GitHub repository).
Where RimWorld saves are stored
For the ordinary Windows RimWorld client, the RimWorld Wiki lists this standard save directory:

It is not automatically the location of a hosted RimWorld Together world. A provider guide may instead refer to a rimworld-together/Saves directory. MintServers, for example, describes uploading an archive to the server’s Saves folder, while ZAP-Hosting describes uploading a save folder through FTP into rimworld-together/Saves. Treat those as host-specific destinations, not as interchangeable names.
Provider workflows are not interchangeable
The following comparison keeps the documented procedures separate. A host may change its panel labels or directory layout, so use the provider’s current article alongside this checklist.

| Provider documentation | Data scope described | Upload method | Destination or handling | Stop requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shockbyte (March 11, 2026) | Archived server files from an existing RimWorld Together world | Host control panel upload | Upload the archive, then extract it on the panel | Stop the destination server before the transfer; start it after the files are in place |
| MintServers (April 21, 2026) | A save archive | Host file manager or upload interface | Place the archive in the server Saves folder |
Server must be stopped while uploading |
| ZAP-Hosting | The save folder | FTP | Upload into rimworld-together/Saves |
Follow the host’s current stop/start instructions before launching the changed world |
Do not combine the Shockbyte archive extraction procedure with MintServers’ or ZAP-Hosting’s paths. One guide concerns a whole archived server file set, one places an archive in a Saves directory, and one transfers a folder over FTP.
Shockbyte: transfer an existing RimWorld Together world
Use this sequence only when the source is already a RimWorld Together world and your Shockbyte panel presents the same workflow described in its guide.
Recommended Free Tools
- Make a recoverable copy first. Use the available backup controls or retain an untouched copy of the source server files. Confirm that the backup completed before proceeding.
- Prepare the source archive. Shockbyte’s documented process transfers archived local server files, rather than treating a normal offline RimWorld save as a compatible input.
- Stop the destination server. Do not upload over files that the running server may be reading or writing.
- Open the destination host’s file-management panel. Select the upload function described in the Shockbyte article. Panel names can change, so match the current interface rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Upload the archive. Keep the archive intact during transfer unless the panel specifically requires another format.
- Extract the archive on the server. The guide’s workflow includes extraction after upload. Confirm that extraction produces the expected RimWorld Together server files in the panel’s working location, not an extra nested directory.
- Check the mod setup before launch. The destination should use the mod set required by the transferred world. Differences can cause gameplay problems.
- Start the server and test with one client. Watch the console or panel for load errors. If the world does not appear, stop rather than repeatedly restarting and restore the backup.
The Shockbyte article’s title uses “singleplayer save,” but its compatibility statement narrows the process to an existing RimWorld Together server world. Read that qualification before selecting files.
MintServers: place a save archive in the Saves folder
MintServers documents a narrower archive-based workflow. It is not the same as uploading a complete Shockbyte server archive.

- Back up the destination and source. Keep a copy that can be restored if the uploaded archive is incomplete or incompatible.
- Stop the MintServers server. The provider’s guide requires the server to be stopped for the upload.
- Prepare the supported Together save as an archive. This assumes the world originated in RimWorld Together; an ordinary RimWorld single-player save is not made compatible by compression.
- Open the server’s file manager or upload area. Navigate to the server’s
Savesfolder as specified by the current MintServers instructions. - Upload the archive into that folder. Do not substitute the standard Windows client path unless the provider explicitly maps it to the server’s directory.
- Apply any extraction step the panel requires. The guide describes placing an archive in
Saves; follow the current panel’s handling instructions instead of assuming that every host extracts automatically. - Verify the resulting name and location. A second nested
Savesfolder or an archive left unprocessed will prevent the server from finding the world. - Confirm mods, then start the server. Test the transferred world and retain the backup until the colony loads and can be saved normally.
MintServers’ article is dated April 21, 2026. Because provider procedures change, treat that date as the scope of the cited instructions rather than a promise that its panel will always look identical.

ZAP-Hosting describes a folder-based FTP workflow. It uses a different data scope and destination from the two archive procedures above.
- Create or verify a backup. Keep the original folder and confirm the destination can be restored.
- Stop the destination server according to ZAP-Hosting’s current guide. File transfers should not race with a running server’s save operations.
- Connect with the FTP credentials supplied by the host. Use the host’s current server address, account and port; these values are account-specific and are not stated in the general guide.
- Open the RimWorld Together directory. The documented destination is
rimworld-together/Saves. - Upload the save folder. This is not the same instruction as uploading a single archive to MintServers or an entire server archive to Shockbyte.
- Check the remote folder structure. The save should be inside the expected
Savesdirectory, without an accidental extra parent folder caused by the FTP client. - Review the mod set. ZAP-Hosting warns that moving worlds between servers with different mods may cause gameplay issues.
- Start the server and test the world. If it fails to load, stop the server, preserve logs and restore the backup before trying another file arrangement.
Mod compatibility is a prerequisite, not a cleanup step
A save is more than a map file. Its buildings, pawns, items and other state can depend on the mods active when the world was generated. The RimWorld Together wiki recommends generating a server world with the mods you plan to use (Creating a Server). ZAP-Hosting separately warns that moving a world between servers with different mods can produce gameplay issues (save-game guide).
- Compare the destination’s enabled mods with the source world before launch.
- Do not add or remove mods during the file transfer unless the project or host specifically instructs you to do so.
- If the server starts but the colony behaves incorrectly, stop it and treat the mod mismatch as a primary suspect.
- Keep the source copy so you can return to the known-good mod arrangement.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely issue to check | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| The world does not appear in the server | Wrong directory, archive not extracted, or an extra nested folder | Stop the server, inspect the provider’s expected path, and compare it with the host-specific instructions. Do not assume the Windows client path is the server path. |
| The upload completes but the server will not start | Incomplete archive, damaged transfer, incompatible files, or a mod mismatch | Stop further attempts, retain logs, restore the backup, and retry only with a verified archive or folder. |
| The server starts but the save has errors or missing content | Source and destination mods differ | Match the intended mod setup before loading the transferred world; consult the host and project documentation for version-specific behavior. |
| You uploaded a normal RimWorld save from the Windows Saves directory | The file is an ordinary single-player save, not an existing Together world | Do not call this a successful migration. The cited procedure does not support that input; ask maintainers about a current importer. |
| You cannot find the expected folder | You are looking at the client save location while the host uses a server-specific directory | Use RimWorld’s Settings → Save data location → Show only to locate the ordinary client saves, and use the host’s file manager or FTP path for server data. |
What the project documentation does—and does not—specify
The official project materials describe server files and container deployment, and the GitHub repository characterizes hardware demands as not heavy while calling out network bandwidth. They do not publish a quantified minimum upload speed, minimum RAM figure, migration success rate or universal file-size limit (RimWorld Together GitHub repository). Avoid choosing hardware or a connection based on numbers that are not stated.
Likewise, there is no single universal “RimWorld Together save folder” that can be safely substituted across hosts. The ordinary Windows location, a host’s Saves folder and ZAP-Hosting’s rimworld-together/Saves path refer to different environments.
If you truly have only an ordinary single-player save
- Keep the original save and its backup in the normal RimWorld client location.
- Do not overwrite a server’s existing files while experimenting.
- Ask the RimWorld Together maintainers whether a supported importer exists for the current project and game versions.
- If the maintainers confirm that no importer exists, start a new Together world using the intended mods, as described by the project’s server-creation guidance.
Starting a new Together world is not the same as continuing the offline colony. The available documentation does not establish a supported way to convert that colony, so the honest answer is to verify with the maintainers rather than promise that FTP, archiving or renaming will work.
Quick Recap
Final pre-launch checklist
- Is the source definitely an existing RimWorld Together world?
- Did you make and verify a backup before changing destination files?
- Is the destination server stopped as required by its provider?
- Are you following the correct provider workflow: whole archive, archive in
Saves, or FTP folder upload? - Is the data in the host’s documented directory, without an extra nested folder?
- Does the destination use the world’s intended mod setup?
- Have you retained the original files until the world loads and saves successfully?
