Spend upgrade materials on the weapons and equipment you actually use, not across your entire collection. Prioritize core weapons and their level breakthroughs, keep character progression high enough to avoid blocking weapon levels, then invest in matrices and armor according to their distinct upgrade systems and how likely you are to replace an item.
Choose your active loadout before spending
Start with the team you bring into the content you play. Decide whether its main need is damage, support, shield breaking, or survivability, then focus upgrades on the weapons that fill those roles. This is a resource-efficiency recommendation, not an official rule: the value of an upgrade depends on whether the item is part of your working loadout.

Use these checks when deciding between upgrades:
- Loadout relevance: Is the weapon, matrix, or armor piece equipped for your current team and content?
- Immediate payoff: Will the spend improve stats, meet a level threshold, unlock a useful star effect, or contribute to a matrix set effect?
- Resource scarcity: Could the same material advance another core part of the loadout?
- Transferability: Does the progress stay with an equipment slot when you replace an item, or stay attached to that item?
- Confidence: Is the advice confirmed in the live game, or does it come from an older guide?
How weapon upgrades work
Weapon leveling, breakthrough, and advancement are separate investments. Weapon Batteries provide weapon EXP; breakthrough materials are used when a weapon reaches a level threshold; and duplicate copies advance a weapon’s stars. The community guides describe these mechanics, but they do not establish current costs or exact thresholds. Check the weapon’s live upgrade screen before committing materials. Level core weapons and meet their breakthroughs
Level the weapons in your active team first. Weapon Batteries provide the basic EXP investment, while breakthrough materials raise the level ceiling at required intervals. Because breakthrough needs and level limits can change, use the in-game weapon screen to see the next requirement rather than relying on an old list of amounts.

Use duplicates selectively
A duplicate advances a weapon’s stars and may unlock effects, but the benefit depends on that weapon and your build. Treat advancement as a separate, copy-dependent choice—not a universal priority over leveling the weapons you already use. Check the effect shown in game and weigh its usefulness against the materials and copies you can spare.
Keep character progression from becoming a bottleneck
The available mechanics guides describe weapon levels as limited by character level. That means weapon EXP alone may not let you progress if character advancement is behind. When a weapon cannot be raised further, check its displayed level limit and your character progression before farming more weapon EXP or breakthrough items. The guides are older, so verify the current dependency and limits in game rather than applying historical caps.

Upgrade matrices as a separate system
Matrices have their own progression: Matrix EXP chips level them, while duplicate matrices advance them. Their set effects also matter, so evaluate the equipped set as a whole instead of treating each matrix’s level as the only source of value. Spend first on matrices that support the weapons and roles in your active loadout; do not assume a current best-in-slot ranking from older build examples.

Armor Enhancement and Fusion serve different purposes. The mechanics guide describes Enhancement as raising fixed stats and granting bonuses when equipped pieces reach shared milestone levels. It says enhancement progress carries over by equipment slot when armor is replaced. Fusion adds stars to an individual piece and improves its random stats; those stars do not transfer to a replacement. Since the guide’s gear page was last updated in 2022, confirm the current behavior in game. If it still applies, slot-based Enhancement is the less item-specific investment when you expect to replace a piece.

What current information can—and cannot—confirm
The Tower of Fantasy Operations Team announced version 6.3, “Between Twilight and Dawn,” with maintenance scheduled for September 15, 2026. The notice says The Witch’s Key would join the permanent Choice Weapons special order and Gray Fox Matrices the permanent Choice Matrices special order. It is a version and availability notice, not a guide to upgrade costs or optimal investments. Read the official version 6.3 announcement.
