How to Upgrade to Linux Mint 27 Safely and Keep Your Files

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

You cannot perform an officially documented Linux Mint 27 upgrade yet. Linux Mint 27 “Adrien” is planned for Christmas 2026, but the Mint team’s October 13, 2026 announcement describes it as an upcoming release with features still in development. No official Mint 27 upgrade procedure, supported starting versions, or rollback requirements had been published in the available guidance.

You can still prepare safely. Keep a separate, verified copy of irreplaceable personal files, create a Timeshift system snapshot when the eventual instructions call for one, and wait for Mint’s release-specific guide rather than applying the procedure for Mint 22.3 to Mint 27.

Linux Mint 27 status: planned, not ready to upgrade

Linux Mint team member Clem wrote in the team’s October 13, 2026 monthly news: “Our next release is scheduled for Christmas, and it will be called Linux Mint 27 ‘Adrien’.” The same announcement presents the release details as previews that are still being worked on. A scheduled release is not the same as a published upgrade path, so there is no responsible way to provide a Mint 27 command sequence today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The announcement says Mint 27 will be based on Ubuntu 26.04 and is planned for Cinnamon, Xfce, and MATE editions. It also says the project is moving to yearly releases without point releases, with Linux Mint 28 planned as the next release after 27. Those are project plans, not instructions for upgrading an existing installation.

Question What is established What is not yet established
When is Mint 27? Planned for Christmas 2026, according to the October 13, 2026 announcement. A guaranteed release day or a guaranteed date for the upgrade tool.
What is it based on? The team says Ubuntu 26.04. Final package changes, hardware requirements, or third-party software compatibility.
Which editions are planned? Cinnamon, Xfce, and MATE are planned. Edition-specific upgrade instructions and caveats.
Which installed Mint versions can upgrade? Not stated in the announcement or the available Mint 27 material. Whether a direct upgrade is supported, whether an intermediate release is required, and the exact starting-version list.
How will the upgrade work? No Mint 27 procedure has been published in the available sources. The exact Update Manager or command-line steps, repository handling, downtime, and rollback process.

Do not use the Mint 22.3 procedure as a Mint 27 procedure

Linux Mint’s current upgrade guide in the available documentation covers a specific point release: Mint 22, 22.1, or 22.2 upgrading to Mint 22.3. It tells those users to make a Timeshift snapshot, update Cinnamon spices if they use them, refresh Update Manager, install relevant updates, start the named 22.3 upgrade, follow its prompts, and reboot.

That sequence is tied to the 22.x release family and its upgrade tool. A future Mint 27 upgrade could support different source versions, require an intermediate upgrade, handle repositories differently, or use different prompts. Copying the 22.3 labels or commands into a Mint 27 article would create a risk of an unsupported upgrade. Treat the 22.3 process below as a historical, version-specific example only.

What a safe Mint 27 upgrade must protect

A safe upgrade has two separate recovery layers. Keeping them separate prevents a common mistake: assuming that a system snapshot is a complete backup of every document and personal setting.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

1. A separate copy of personal files

Make an independent copy of files that would be difficult or impossible to replace: documents, photographs, videos, project directories, email archives, password-manager exports, SSH keys, browser profiles, and any local application data you deliberately need. Store that copy somewhere other than the system installation being upgraded.

  1. List the folders and files you actually need. Include data outside your normal home folders, such as a separate work directory or an application’s local database.
  2. Copy the files to another storage location before upgrading. If you use a file manager, enable the display of hidden files while checking your home directory so that configuration and application-data folders are not overlooked.
  3. Open several files from the copy, or otherwise verify that the copy can be read. A backup that was never checked can fail when it is needed.
  4. Keep the original copy untouched until the upgraded system has booted, your applications open normally, and your important files are present.

Mintbackup’s Mint 22.3 feature notes mention an “Include All” button that makes it easier to add hidden files and folders to a backup. That is a feature of that version of the application, not proof that any backup is complete and not a Mint 27 requirement. Decide what must be preserved and verify the resulting copy yourself.

2. A system rollback snapshot

Timeshift is intended for a system snapshot and rollback. The Mint 22.3 upgrade guide recommends creating one before the upgrade. A snapshot can help restore system files and configuration if an upgrade leaves the operating system unusable, but it should not be treated as the only copy of irreplaceable personal data.

When Mint publishes the Mint 27 instructions, follow whatever snapshot scope, storage location, and retention requirements that guide specifies. Before starting, confirm that the snapshot completed successfully and that its destination remains available during the upgrade. Do not begin if the snapshot reports an error or if you cannot access the recovery path it creates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a snapshot and file backup are different

A system rollback is designed to return operating-system files and settings to an earlier state. A personal-file backup is designed to let you retrieve individual documents and other data after a failed upgrade, accidental deletion, disk problem, or mistake during recovery. They solve different problems and may have different storage locations and lifetimes.

For example, if a snapshot restores the system to its pre-upgrade state, it does not automatically prove that every photograph, email archive, hidden configuration directory, or application database is present in the copy you need. Conversely, a folder copy can preserve your documents while doing nothing to repair a broken boot or incompatible system package. Keep both layers until you have completed post-upgrade checks.

Use a simple inventory before copying. Note the names of external drives, mounted partitions, encrypted containers, virtual-machine images, game saves, and any service that stores data outside your home directory. If an application has an export function, use it in addition to copying its files. Write down where the backup is stored and how it is unlocked; a backup that cannot be found or decrypted is not a practical recovery plan.

Preparation to do before Mint publishes the guide

Preparation is useful now, but the final upgrade should wait for official instructions. These checks reduce surprises without guessing at a future command sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify your current edition and version

Record whether the computer runs Cinnamon, Xfce, or MATE, and record the exact Mint version shown by the system-information tool. Also note whether the installation is 64-bit, which proprietary drivers you use, and whether you depend on software from outside Mint’s standard repositories. The eventual guide’s eligibility rules will apply to the exact installation, not merely to the word “Linux Mint.”

Record how the disk is arranged as well. Note whether your home directory is on the same partition as the system, whether you use encryption, and whether you boot through a custom arrangement. These notes do not establish compatibility, but they make it easier to answer the questions in the release-specific guide and to explain your setup if recovery is needed.

Bring the existing system up to date

Use Update Manager to install normal updates that are already offered for your current release. Do not interpret ordinary updates as permission to start a Mint 27 upgrade. If an eventual upgrade tool offers an update to components such as mintupdate or mint-upgrade-info, install it only when the official guide identifies it as part of the supported process.

Apply updates while the current system is still working normally, then reboot if your current release requests it. This separates routine maintenance from the later distribution upgrade and gives you a known, stable starting point. Do not add testing repositories or pre-release packages merely to make Mint 27 appear earlier; no supported Mint 27 route has been published.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review software and repositories

Make a list of software that is essential after the upgrade and note which packages came from third-party repositories, local installers, or manually added drivers. The Mint 27 guide may require disabling or replacing some sources. Until those rules are published, do not remove repositories at random; instead, keep a record so that you can make deliberate changes and reinstall only what is compatible.

Pay particular attention to software you cannot easily download again, such as locally installed packages, licensed applications, custom fonts, plug-ins, and development toolchains. Save license information and configuration notes separately from the operating-system disk. This is preparation, not a prediction that any particular package will fail under Mint 27.

Plan for downtime and recovery

Do not start an operating-system upgrade immediately before travel, a deadline, or work that depends on the computer. Keep power connected on a laptop, close running applications, and make sure you have another way to access your backup and the official instructions. The eventual guide should define expected downtime; the current sources do not.

Arrange a second device or printed notes for the recovery information you may need if the upgraded system does not boot. Confirm that you know how to reach the Timeshift recovery environment described by the eventual guide. This is especially important when the only copy of the instructions or backup location is stored on the computer being upgraded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when the official Mint 27 guide appears

Use the guide for the exact release and edition, and do not substitute instructions from a different Mint version. A cautious sequence is:

  1. Read the guide completely and confirm that your installed version is an eligible starting point. If it lists an intermediate upgrade, complete that route instead of forcing a direct jump.
  2. Check the edition-specific notes and any requirements for disk space, drivers, encryption, repositories, or packages.
  3. Make and verify a separate copy of personal files. Keep it available until the upgraded system has been tested.
  4. Create the Timeshift snapshot if the official procedure requires one, and confirm that it completed without errors.
  5. Apply the preparation updates and changes named by the guide, including any required Update Manager components.
  6. Start the official upgrade tool from the documented menu or command. Read its proposed package changes before accepting them.
  7. Stop and investigate if the tool proposes unexpected removals, reports dependency errors, or cannot complete a prerequisite. Do not approve a large removal list simply to make the process continue.
  8. Follow every prompt, keep the computer powered, and do not interrupt package configuration.
  9. Reboot only as instructed. After startup, test networking, graphics, sound, external storage, essential applications, and the files you backed up.
  10. Keep the snapshot and personal-file copy until you are satisfied that the system is stable.

Review the proposed changes, not just the progress bar

An upgrade tool may present a summary of packages to install, replace, or remove. Read that summary before confirming. A removal that concerns an unused component may be expected, but removal of a desktop environment, network manager, display driver, backup tool, or essential application deserves investigation. If the tool reports unresolved dependencies or a prerequisite failure, cancel where the interface permits and consult the Mint-specific instructions rather than improvising.

Do not force the process by deleting packages, editing repository files, or mixing instructions from another release. The unresolved details include how Mint 27 will treat third-party sources and whether special package cleanup is required. Those decisions belong in the published guide.

Verify the first boot

After the reboot, sign in and check the basics before deleting any recovery material. Confirm that the expected Mint version and edition are shown, networking works, the display has the correct resolution, sound output is available, and external storage mounts as expected. Open the applications you rely on most and test a sample of the files from your backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check for obvious package or driver errors and verify that your backup destination is still readable. If something important is missing, preserve the separate file copy and use the documented recovery path. Do not assume that a successful login means every service, driver, or personal setting is functioning.

The documented Mint 22.3 example

The following procedure is included to show the level of specificity in a published Mint upgrade guide. It applies to Linux Mint 22, 22.1, or 22.2 upgrading to 22.3; it is not a Mint 27 procedure.

  1. Create a Timeshift system snapshot.
  2. If Cinnamon spices are installed, update them.
  3. Open Update Manager, refresh it, and apply the relevant updates. The guide specifically notes updates to mintupdate or mint-upgrade-info when they are offered.
  4. Choose Edit > Upgrade to Linux Mint 22.3 Zena.
  5. Follow the upgrade prompts.
  6. Reboot when prompted or when the guide instructs you to do so.

The menu label, eligible versions, release codename, and component requirements in this example belong to Mint 22.3. None establishes the corresponding Mint 27 labels or commands.

In-place upgrade versus clean installation

An in-place upgrade keeps the existing installation and is the route an official upgrade guide would describe if Mint supports it for your starting version. A clean installation is a separate route: it replaces or repartitions the operating-system installation and requires installation media. It can be useful when the official guide does not support your starting version or when you want a fresh system, but it increases the importance of a verified personal-file backup and a written list of applications and settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mint’s installation documentation describes creating bootable installation media. Therefore, a USB flash drive is relevant to a clean-install fallback, not an established requirement for an in-place Mint 27 upgrade. Do not erase the existing installation until you have verified the backup, confirmed that the computer can boot the installation media, and decided how the disk will be partitioned.

A clean install also means rebuilding the working environment: reinstalling applications, restoring personal files, recreating accounts or settings, and checking drivers. It may be the appropriate path later, but it is not a shortcut around the need to understand the supported Mint 27 release information. Keep the old installation or a recoverable backup until the replacement is fully tested.

When to stop instead of forcing the upgrade

  • No official Mint 27 guide: wait rather than adapting 22.3 instructions.
  • Unsupported starting version: follow the intermediate-release route named by Mint, if one is provided.
  • Snapshot failure: resolve the Timeshift error or create the required recovery plan before proceeding.
  • Unverified personal backup: make and test a separate copy first.
  • Unexpected package removals: cancel and identify why essential software is being removed.
  • Dependency or repository errors: use the release guide’s compatibility instructions; do not delete packages or repositories blindly.
  • Power or storage uncertainty: postpone until the computer is connected to power and has the capacity and time required by the official procedure.
  • Hardware failure after reboot: use the documented recovery method and the Timeshift snapshot, while retaining the separate personal-file copy.
  • Missing personal data: stop normal cleanup and recover from the independent file copy before changing more system files.
  • Unclear instructions: do not fill gaps with commands from forums or from another Mint release.

What Mint 22.3 support does—and does not—tell you about Mint 27

Linux Mint’s 22.3 release information says that 22.3 receives security updates until 2029. That date applies to Mint 22.3; it is not a Mint 27 support promise and should not be used to infer Mint 27’s lifecycle.

Likewise, no independent upgrade success rate, failure rate, or data-loss statistic is established in the available official material. Backups and snapshots reduce the consequences of a failure, but they do not make an upgrade risk-free.

The planned move to yearly releases without point releases may change how future versions are presented, but it does not reveal whether Mint 27 will accept a direct upgrade from your installation. Wait for the eligibility list and exact procedure rather than assuming that a yearly cadence removes intermediate steps.

A practical decision checklist

Before pressing an upgrade button, you should be able to answer “yes” to all of these:

  • Has Mint published a guide specifically for Linux Mint 27?
  • Is my exact installed version listed as a supported starting point?
  • Do I know whether my edition has special instructions?
  • Have I copied irreplaceable personal files separately from the system installation?
  • Have I checked that the copy can actually be read?
  • Have I created the system snapshot required by the official procedure?
  • Have I reviewed the upgrade tool’s package and removal list?
  • Do I have power, time, and a recovery plan if the reboot does not succeed?
  • Have I recorded third-party repositories, manually installed software, and important application settings?
  • Have I kept both recovery layers available until normal work succeeds after the reboot?

If any answer is “no,” postpone the upgrade. The unresolved details—supported source versions, direct versus intermediate upgrades, exact commands, third-party repository handling, and official rollback requirements—must come from Mint’s Mint 27 documentation rather than from the Mint 22.3 example.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade to Linux Mint 27 now?

Not through an officially documented route. The Mint team announced on October 13, 2026 that Mint 27 “Adrien” is planned for Christmas 2026, but the release is still upcoming and its upgrade procedure has not been published.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Mint versions will be eligible for a direct Mint 27 upgrade?

That has not been stated. Wait for Mint’s release-specific eligibility list; an intermediate upgrade may be required.

Is Timeshift enough to protect my files?

No. Timeshift is a system snapshot and rollback measure. Keep a separate, verified copy of irreplaceable personal files as well.

Should I use the Mint 22.3 upgrade menu for Mint 27?

No. The documented Edit > Upgrade to Linux Mint 22.3 Zena process applies only to Mint 22, 22.1, or 22.2 moving to 22.3. It does not establish Mint 27 commands or menu labels.

Does Mintbackup include hidden files?

Mintbackup’s Mint 22.3 notes describe an “Include All” button that makes adding hidden files and folders easier. You still need to decide what data matters and verify the resulting backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a USB drive for a Mint 27 upgrade?

Not for an established in-place upgrade. A USB flash drive is relevant if you choose a clean installation, because that path uses bootable installation media.

What should I do if the upgrade tool wants to remove important packages?

Stop and investigate. Review the proposed changes and consult the Mint 27 guide; do not approve unexpected removals or delete repositories blindly just to continue.

How long will Mint 27 be supported?

No Mint 27 support period is established here. The security-update date until 2029 applies to Mint 22.3, not to Mint 27.

The Bottom Line

Linux Mint 27 “Adrien” is planned for Christmas 2026, but there is no official upgrade path to follow yet. Wait for Mint’s release-specific guide, back up personal files separately, create and verify a Timeshift snapshot when the guide requires it, review package changes carefully, and keep both recovery options until the upgraded system has been tested.
