How to upgrade the Framework Laptop 12 and keep your files and apps

Short answer: a memory upgrade leaves the Framework Laptop 12’s SSD, operating system, files and installed applications untouched. Replacing its only SSD is different: once the original drive is removed, the old Windows or Linux installation is no longer in the laptop. To keep that environment, back up first and migrate or clone the old drive before removal. If you install Windows fresh instead, you can restore personal files, but you will need to reinstall applications.

The Laptop 12 has one M.2 2230 NVMe storage slot and one DDR5 SO-DIMM memory slot. Confirm those specifications, your processor generation and your operating-system plan before buying parts.

Choose the upgrade that matches your goal

There are two separate upgrade paths. They differ in risk, preparation and what happens to the existing system.

Upgrade What stays installed What you must plan Key specification
Memory (RAM) The existing SSD, operating system, files and applications Shut down, open the laptop, install compatible memory, then test One DDR5 SO-DIMM; limits depend on processor generation
SSD Nothing from the old system unless you migrate it first Back up data, then either clone/migrate the old drive or perform a fresh installation One M.2 2230 NVMe SSD slot

If your problem is too little multitasking capacity, choose memory. If you are running out of disk space or need a faster or newer system drive, choose an SSD replacement and make a migration decision before opening the chassis.

Check compatibility before ordering parts

Storage: M.2 2230 NVMe only

The Laptop 12 provides one M.2 2230 NVMe SSD slot. “2230” describes the module’s physical size: 22 mm wide and 30 mm long. A physically longer 2242 or 2280 module is not the specified fit for this slot, and a SATA M.2 module is not the specified interface. Select an NVMe drive explicitly listed in the 2230 form factor.

Compare capacity, price and warranty among compatible 2230 NVMe modules. Do not treat advertised sequential read or write figures as a Laptop 12 benchmark; no Laptop 12 test data is established here. Because there is only one slot, installing a larger drive requires removing the original one unless you use an external drive temporarily during migration.

Memory: one DDR5 SO-DIMM, with generation-specific limits

Framework’s Laptop 12 memory guide lists different ceilings for the two processor families. These are compatibility limits, not performance measurements.

Processor family Maximum listed memory Listed memory speed
13th Gen Intel Up to 48 GB DDR5-5200
Core Series 3 Up to 64 GB DDR5-6400

Buy a DDR5 SO-DIMM that matches your processor’s supported limit. A module rated faster than the system’s supported speed may run at the supported speed; the rating alone does not make the laptop operate faster. Do not apply the 48 GB figure to Core Series 3 or the 64 GB figure to 13th Gen Intel.

Back up first and decide how the SSD should be migrated

Before removing a drive, copy important documents, photos, project files, browser data and any other irreplaceable material to an external USB storage device or another verified destination. A backup is separate from a clone: a backup gives you recoverable files, while a clone attempts to reproduce the old system on a replacement drive.

Path A: keep the existing installation with a migration or clone

Choose this path when preserving the current Windows or Linux environment and installed applications is important. The old SSD must remain available long enough to copy its partitions to the new drive. Because the Laptop 12 has one internal M.2 slot, the usual arrangement is to connect the replacement 2230 NVMe drive through a suitable external enclosure or adapter, run migration software for your operating system, shut down, swap the drives, and boot from the replacement.

Framework’s Laptop 12 documentation explains physical replacement but does not publish or validate a Laptop 12-specific cloning recipe. The exact procedure depends on your operating system, partition layout, encryption, boot mode and chosen software. Treat cloning as a possible approach, not a Framework-guaranteed result. A clone can require boot-repair steps, and applications may still request sign-in, reactivation or reinstallation. Do not assume every license, activation token, security credential or hardware-tied application survives the move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before removing the source drive, verify that the migration completed and that the destination contains the expected system and data partitions. Keep the original SSD untouched until the replacement has booted and your important files have been checked. It is your fallback if the migration fails.

Path B: install Windows from scratch and restore your data

Choose a fresh installation when you prefer a clean system or do not need to preserve the current application installation. This does not keep already-installed applications. You will restore personal files from backup and reinstall programs afterward.

Framework’s Windows 11 installation guide is written for the Laptop 12 DIY Edition and covers Windows 11 Home or Pro installation media. It says to install memory, storage and Wi-Fi before installing Windows. Have those components in place, prepare the installation media, and keep your backup available. After Windows starts, install the Framework Driver Bundle; a fresh installation may not contain every driver required for full hardware support.

Prepare the workspace and tools

Shut the laptop down completely, disconnect the charger and unplug peripherals before opening it. The official SSD replacement procedure uses a T5 Torx bit. The DIY quick-start package lists a Framework Screwdriver among included items, so a DIY owner may already have the needed driver; do not buy a separate tool until you check what came with your system.

  • Work on a clean, static-safe surface and keep screws organized.
  • Have the replacement M.2 2230 NVMe SSD, your backup destination and any migration enclosure ready before removing the original drive.
  • If you are installing Windows fresh, prepare Windows 11 installation media and arrange network access for updates and the Driver Bundle.
  • Record any application credentials, recovery keys or license information you may need after migration or reinstallation.

Install additional memory

Memory is the least disruptive upgrade because it does not replace the system drive. Follow the Laptop 12 memory guide for the exact access sequence and module orientation.

  1. Shut down the operating system, wait for the laptop to turn off and unplug the charger.
  2. Remove the bottom cover using the specified screws and T5 Torx bit, following the guide’s order.
  3. Locate the single DDR5 SO-DIMM slot. Release the side clips if a module is already installed, or align the notch on the new module with the slot key.
  4. Insert the module at the guide’s angle, then press it down until the retaining clips engage. Never force a misaligned module.
  5. Reassemble the cover, reconnect power and start the laptop.
  6. In your operating system’s system-information screen, confirm that the expected capacity is detected. Run your normal applications and watch for boot errors or memory diagnostics warnings.

If the laptop reports less memory than expected, shut down and reseat the module. Recheck the processor-specific capacity limit and the module’s DDR5 SO-DIMM type before assuming the hardware is defective.

Replace the SSD while preserving the old system

1. Complete and verify the migration before opening the laptop

Connect the new 2230 NVMe drive through an appropriate external enclosure or adapter, then use an operating-system-compatible migration method. Follow that software’s instructions for copying all required system, recovery and data partitions. Framework does not document a specific cloning workflow for this model, so consult the migration software’s current instructions for your exact OS and encryption configuration.

When the copy finishes, inspect the destination’s partition list and verify several representative files. If the software offers a verification or comparison pass, run it. Do not erase or alter the original until the replacement has successfully booted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Remove the original drive

  1. Shut down completely. Do not use sleep or hibernation as a substitute for powering off.
  2. Unplug the charger and all accessories.
  3. Remove the bottom cover with the T5 Torx bit, following Framework’s Laptop 12 SSD replacement guide.
  4. Release the SSD’s retaining screw, lift the module from its connector and place it in an antistatic location. Handle the edges rather than the contacts.
  5. Insert the migrated replacement drive into the M.2 2230 slot at the connector angle, press it down and secure it with the retaining screw.
  6. Replace the bottom cover, reconnect power and start the laptop.

Framework rates this physical SSD replacement as Easy and estimates 00:05:00–00:15:00. That estimate covers the hardware task in the guide only; it excludes backup, migration, operating-system installation, updates and application setup.

3. Confirm boot and application behavior

Allow the system to boot from the replacement drive. Check that the expected user account, files and applications are present, then open several important programs rather than assuming a successful login proves everything transferred. Some software may require a new activation, a sign-in or a repair install. If the system does not boot, power down and reinstall the original SSD to recover the prior environment while you investigate the migration.

Replace the SSD with a fresh Windows 11 installation

Before installation

This route starts with an empty replacement drive. Copy your personal files to backup storage and make a list of applications you will reinstall. Gather account credentials, cloud-sync details, browser-export data and any application-specific export files.

Installation sequence for the DIY Edition

  1. Install the replacement M.2 2230 NVMe SSD and confirm that memory and Wi-Fi are installed. Framework’s Windows 11 guide specifically says these components should be in place before installing Windows 11 Home or Pro.
  2. Boot from your Windows 11 installation media and select the replacement drive as the installation target. Follow Microsoft’s setup prompts for edition, account and network configuration.
  3. Run Windows Update and restart as requested.
  4. Install the Framework Driver Bundle. The bundle is important after a fresh installation because the default Windows image may not include every driver needed for complete hardware support.
  5. Confirm that Wi-Fi, audio, display, keyboard, touchpad, webcam and other devices work in Device Manager and in ordinary use.
  6. Restore personal files from the backup, reinstall applications from their legitimate installers, sign in and reconfigure preferences.

A fresh installation is not a method for retaining already-installed applications. It gives you a clean operating-system environment and a controlled opportunity to restore only the files and programs you still need.

Do not apply mainboard-replacement instructions to a normal RAM or SSD swap

Framework’s mainboard guide contains Windows encryption and activation steps for a different job. For a mainboard replacement, Windows users are told to back up data, suspend BitLocker on Windows Pro or turn off Device Encryption on Windows Home if enabled, and locate the product key or link the license to a Microsoft account in case reactivation is required.

Those instructions address a mainboard change. Do not automatically alter encryption settings just because you are adding memory or replacing the SSD. For an SSD migration, follow the requirements of your operating system and migration software; preserve recovery information and encryption credentials so you can unlock the source or destination when required.

Recovery and troubleshooting

The replacement drive is not detected

  • Power down and reseat the M.2 2230 module.
  • Confirm that the module is NVMe and 2230, not a different length or SATA-only model.
  • Check that the retaining screw is holding the module flat and that no debris is in the connector.
  • If the drive was used for migration, reconnect it externally and confirm that the migration software completed without errors.

The laptop boots to an installer instead of the migrated system

Remove the installation USB and restart. If the replacement still does not boot, review the migration software’s boot-repair guidance for your operating system and partition scheme. Reinstall the original SSD if you need immediate access to your previous system; keeping it untouched is why the backup-and-verify sequence matters.

Windows starts but hardware functions are missing

Run Windows Update and install the Framework Driver Bundle as directed by the Laptop 12 Windows installation guide. Recheck Device Manager after restarting. A fresh Windows image can lack model-specific drivers until the bundle is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applications ask for activation

That behavior is possible after either migration or a fresh installation. Sign in with the application’s account, enter the saved license information or use the publisher’s recovery process. A clone is not a guarantee that activation survives a change of drive, installation state or hardware identity.

Final checks before you retire the old SSD

  • Boot the Laptop 12 several times from the replacement drive.
  • Open the documents and applications you consider essential.
  • Confirm that cloud synchronization has completed and that offline files are available.
  • Check Windows activation or your Linux distribution’s status using its normal settings tools.
  • Keep the original SSD and your independent backup until the new installation has been stable for a reasonable period.

The physical replacement itself can take only five to fifteen minutes according to Framework’s published estimate, but preserving a working system is a separate project. Memory upgrades avoid that migration work; SSD upgrades require a deliberate choice between a verified migration and a clean installation followed by restoration.
