Relics are upgraded through appraisal, not the ordinary blacksmith enhancement menu. In the Dark Arisen expansion, collect Relics in Norgan, then take them to Jiera in Norgandian Settlement. Appraisal turns them into weapons or armor that can have improved statistics and new or refined abilities. The exact result is not fully predictable, so the best reward depends on your vocation, Pawn party, combat role and tolerance for weight. Base-game smithing styles remain a separate system with their own offensive, defensive and encumbrance trade-offs.
What Relic upgrading actually is
The word “upgrade” covers two different systems in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Understanding the distinction prevents you from searching for a blacksmith option that does not apply to your Relics.

Relic appraisal in the Dark Arisen expansion
Relics are loot associated with the Dark Arisen expansion’s Norgan region. They are not a generic name for every material used to improve equipment. You find them in treasure chests and as rewards from dangerous enemies, then bring them to Jiera in Norgandian Settlement. Jiera’s appraisal produces a weapon or armor item with its own statistics and possible ability effects.

Reports describe appraised equipment as capable of improving stats and granting new or refined abilities to the Arisen or Pawns. A Steam-hosted Capcom announcement excerpt also describes random parameters. That means appraisal is not presented as a fully transparent recipe in which a particular Relic always produces one named weapon, one fixed bonus or one guaranteed percentage increase.

Ordinary equipment enhancement
The base game has a separate smithing system. Its styles alter the statistics, defenses, knockdown performance and weight of normal equipment. The documented styles are Vermundian, Battahli, Elven, Dwarven and Wyrmfire. The available material does not establish that every appraised Relic can use every one of those enhancement methods, so treat compatibility as something to verify in your current game rather than as an assumption.
How to appraise Relics step by step
- Enter Norgan. Relic hunting belongs to the expansion’s Norgan loop, not to a universal drop table shared by every region of the base game.
- Search treasure chests. Relics are reported among chest contents. Thorough exploration matters because the system is tied to the region’s dangerous, reward-oriented encounters.
- Defeat dangerous enemies. Enemy rewards are another reported source. Do not abandon a difficult fight solely because no chest is nearby; Relics can come from the encounter itself.
- Use Freki when you need help searching. Freki is a Norgandian direwolf that can assist with Relic searches in exchange for meat and pets. Freki is an additional aid, not the only acquisition method.
- Carry the Relics to Norgandian Settlement. The appraisal destination is the settlement, where Jiera handles the process.
- Speak to Jiera and choose appraisal. The resulting item is broadly a weapon or armor piece. The accessible descriptions do not establish a complete recipe, fixed outcome chart or exact odds for every result.
- Inspect the result before replacing your current gear. Compare the item’s attack or magick, defensive values, ability effects, vocation suitability and carried weight. Keep the old item until you have made that comparison.
If Jiera does not offer the expected interaction, check that you are in Norgandian Settlement, that the item is actually a Relic from the expansion loop and that you have completed any prerequisite progression required by your current build. The supplied descriptions do not document a universal quest trigger or material fee, so do not rely on an unverified cost or prerequisite list.
Where Relics come from and how to search efficiently
Treasure chests reward deliberate exploration
Chest searching is the most predictable part of the reported loop: explore Norgan instead of treating Relics as a single vendor currency. Dangerous routes, side chambers and locations that require climbing or detours are worth checking because the system’s rewards are attached to exploration as well as combat.
No verified drop-rate percentage is established for chests. A chest that fails to produce a Relic does not prove that the area is exhausted, and a successful find does not establish a fixed respawn timer or guaranteed sequence. Use the game’s current behavior as your authority for those details.

Dangerous enemies can be part of the reward plan
Because enemy rewards are also reported sources, a combat-focused route can supplement chest runs. Bring a party that can handle the region’s threats rather than repeatedly attempting a route that leaves you overburdened or unable to recover. No enemy-by-enemy Relic table is provided, so it would be misleading to name a guaranteed target or claim that one monster has the best odds.
Freki is a search aid, not a replacement for exploration
Freki’s role is easy to misunderstand. The Norgandian direwolf can help look for Relics when you provide meat and pets, but the reported system still includes chest and enemy acquisition. Budget supplies for Freki if the assistance saves time, while continuing to inspect the environment and defeat reward-bearing enemies.
What appraisal can give you
Weapons and armor with altered statistics
The broad result is equipment rather than a raw upgrade token. An appraised weapon may improve offensive statistics, while armor may improve protection or other defensive values. The precise values depend on the individual result; no complete, verified bonus table is available in the cited descriptions.

New or refined abilities
Appraised gear can carry new abilities or refine existing effects that matter to the Arisen or a Pawn. Read the complete item description instead of judging the reward by its headline attack or defense number. An apparently smaller statistical gain may still be valuable if its ability supports your vocation’s normal actions, improves a Pawn’s role or solves a resistance problem.

Random parameters limit perfect targeting
The Steam-hosted announcement excerpt refers to random parameters, but it does not explain the full randomization rules or provide a reliable method for forcing a chosen result. There is therefore no evidence-based universal “best Relic,” guaranteed reroll recipe or published probability for each bonus. If a result is poor, compare it with your current equipment and continue collecting rather than assuming that one appraisal represents the system’s maximum potential.
How to judge a Relic bonus for your build
Start with the job the item must perform
For a damage-oriented weapon, compare the relevant attack or magick value and then inspect the ability effect. For armor, weigh protection and resistance against the attacks you actually face. A bonus that is powerful on paper may be irrelevant if it does not support your vocation’s damage type, range, resource pattern or defensive needs.
- Arisen: prioritize effects that reinforce your vocation’s core actions and compensate for a weakness you regularly encounter.
- Primary Pawn: favor dependable bonuses that complement the Pawn’s assigned role instead of effects that require rare player-controlled timing.
- Support Pawn: resistance, survivability and useful utility can be more valuable than a small personal damage increase if the Pawn’s purpose is to keep the party functioning.
- Mixed party: avoid giving every member the same type of bonus. Cover damage, durability and encounter-specific needs across the group.
Account for carried weight
A higher-stat item is not automatically the better choice if it pushes the party into an inconvenient encumbrance state. Compare the gain with what you must carry, how often you travel and whether the ability saves enough stamina, damage or recovery time to justify the burden.
Compare the entire item, not one number

These styles are not a universal ranking. A physical vocation may prefer Battahli in one weapon, while a knockdown-focused setup may favor Dwarven. An encumbrance-sensitive caster may gain more from Elven than from a heavier offensive style. The right choice depends on the item, vocation, party role and the stat you are trying to solve for.
Relic appraisal and smithing: what is known and what is not
Do not collapse appraisal and enhancement into one process. Appraisal is the Relic-specific step performed by Jiera. Smithing styles are the base-game equipment system. The available sources do not establish whether every appraised weapon or armor piece accepts every smithing style, whether appraisal replaces prior enhancement, or whether a particular Relic has a special compatibility rule.
When the game displays an enhancement option, read its requirements and previewed changes before confirming. If no option appears, do not assume that a missing menu is a bug; the item may simply have different rules. Current patches can change compatibility, costs and values, and the cited ordinary-enhancement guide is from March 2024 rather than the expansion’s September 2026 reporting.
A practical Relic routine for a new expansion character
- Set a role before hunting. Decide whether the next reward is intended for your Arisen, a damage Pawn, a support Pawn or a resistance-focused loadout.
- Make space and record your baseline. Note the current item’s attack or magick, defenses, ability effects and weight. This gives you a meaningful comparison after appraisal.
- Run a Norgan circuit. Search chests, defeat dangerous enemies that are part of your route and use Freki when its assistance is worth the meat and pet interaction.
- Return to Jiera in Norgandian Settlement. Appraise the Relics rather than looking for a standard blacksmith recipe.
- Inspect every result in context. Check the complete ability text, relevant statistics and weight, then compare against your baseline and party role.
- Keep a situational item when appropriate. A resistance or utility effect can be worth storing even if it is not your everyday choice.
- Enhance only after confirming compatibility. If the item exposes a normal smithing path, review the style’s trade-offs and material requirements. If it does not, do not force a base-game rule onto it.

“Where do I appraise Relics?”
Take them to Jiera in Norgandian Settlement. The appraisal location is not a general blacksmith anywhere in the base game.

“Why did I receive armor when I wanted a weapon?”
The available descriptions establish a broad weapon-or-armor result, not a guaranteed choice table. They do not document a method for forcing a specific category or bonus, so treat each appraisal as an outcome to evaluate rather than a promised item.

“Which smithing style should every vocation use?”

Keeping the information current
Capcom’s online manual was updated July 20, 2026, but the accessible manual page does not provide detailed Relic instructions. Expansion coverage dated September 2, 2026 describes the Norgan, Freki and Jiera loop, while the enhancement guide describing smithing styles was last updated March 31, 2024. Because patches can alter mechanics, confirm live behavior before relying on an exact material cost, bonus value, drop chance or compatibility rule.
The reliable takeaway is therefore procedural rather than numerical: search Norgan, appraise with Jiera, inspect the resulting weapon or armor as a complete item and make the final choice around your build. Use ordinary smithing styles as a separate, trade-off-driven decision rather than assuming they define Relic appraisal.
