To change a 7 Days to Die dedicated server version, stop the server, back up its saves and configuration, then run SteamCMD against dedicated-server app ID 294420. Leave out -beta for the public stable branch; add -beta <branch_name> for an experimental or pinned release. A downgrade works the same way, but only to a branch that Steam still publishes. Every client must use the same branch and a compatible build or the server will report an incompatible version.

Know which application you are updating
Steam uses separate application IDs for the retail game and the dedicated server. SteamCMD must target 294420, the dedicated-server application. App ID 251570 is the retail game and is not the package you should update on a server machine. Pointing SteamCMD at the wrong ID can leave the server installation unchanged even when the command itself completes.

As of 5 October 2026, version 3.3.0 is the current stable build on the default branch. That designation applies to the default branch at that date; it does not mean every experimental or older branch has disappeared.
Choose the branch before you run SteamCMD
Public stable
The default branch is the normal choice for an unmodded production server. A stable update command omits the beta selector, so SteamCMD follows the current public release rather than a pinned test line.

Experimental or pinned
Experimental builds and older pinned releases are selected by their exact Steam branch name. Examples documented for this game include latest_experimental, v3.2.0, v1.0, and older alpha names. These are examples, not a permanent catalogue: branch names can be removed or renamed. Check the live Steam Betas list or print the current app information immediately before relying on a name.
Downgrade or rollback
A downgrade is a branch selection, not a switch that restores arbitrary old files. You can roll back only to a still-published branch. If the historical branch you need is no longer offered, SteamCMD cannot download it; choose a supported branch that satisfies the client or mod requirement instead.
Separate installation versus in-place update
An in-place update replaces files in the existing server directory and is the quickest route, but it leaves less room for side-by-side testing. A separate installation uses a different value for <server-path>, allowing you to keep the current installation intact while you validate another branch. Either approach still requires a backup of saves, configuration and mods, and players must connect to the branch that the running process actually uses.
Prepare the server safely
- Announce maintenance. Tell players when the server will stop and which branch you intend to run afterward. A branch change is a compatibility change, not merely a file download.
- Stop the dedicated-server process cleanly. Do not run SteamCMD while the server is writing world data or holding installation files open.
- Back up the data that can be lost or overwritten. Copy world saves, configuration files and every mod folder to storage outside the installation directory. Keep the copy until the new build has started successfully and the world loads.
- Check capacity and ownership. Confirm that the destination has enough free disk space for the update and that SteamCMD runs as the account that owns the server files. Permission errors can look like incomplete updates.
- Record the target branch. For stable, record “default” and use no beta selector. For another release, copy the exact published branch spelling, including punctuation and capitalization.
Older installation guidance warns that updates can overwrite configuration files. Treat the external configuration backup as mandatory even when a particular update appears to preserve your settings.
Update a self-hosted server to stable
With the process stopped and the backup complete, run this command from the SteamCMD installation:

steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quitReplace <server-path> with the directory that contains the dedicated-server installation. The validate argument checks the downloaded files as part of the update. Re-running the same command is normally incremental: SteamCMD downloads only files that changed.
- Run the command with the server directory as the forced install directory.
- Wait for SteamCMD to finish and return to the shell; do not start the server while files are still being replaced.
- Review the completion output for download or permission errors rather than relying only on a final success line.
- Start the dedicated server and read the build number reported in its console or log.
If the process starts but reports an unexpected build, stop it again and use the stale-build procedure below before allowing players to join.
Install an experimental or pinned branch
Use the same command with the exact branch name supplied to -beta on the app_update operation:
steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_update 294420 -beta <branch_name> validate +quitFor example, a currently published branch might be represented as latest_experimental, v3.2.0 or v1.0. Do not assume that an example remains available: the branch inventory changes over time, and the inventory check recorded on 17 September 2026 is only a snapshot.
Make sure Steam parses the selector correctly
- Put
-beta <branch_name>on the sameapp_update 294420command. - Use the branch spelling exactly as Steam publishes it.
- Keep
validateafter the branch selector so the selected build is checked. - After installation, confirm the running server’s build in its console or log; the command’s success text alone is not proof that the intended branch is active.
When returning to the public stable branch, run the stable command again and omit -beta. Leaving the selector in place will keep SteamCMD on the pinned line.

Downgrade to an older supported build
- Stop the server and make a fresh external backup, including the world, configuration and mods.
- Identify a branch that Steam still publishes and that matches the client or overhaul you need. Verify availability in the current Steam Betas list or app information; an old guide may name a branch that has since been retired.
- Run the branch-specific command with
-beta <branch_name>andvalidate. - Start the server, check its reported build, and test the world before reopening it to players.
- Have every player select that identical branch. A fully updated client on another branch is still incompatible.
If Steam no longer publishes the desired historical branch, there is no SteamCMD argument that can recreate it from an ordinary update. Use a supported branch that satisfies the mod or client requirement, or retain a previously backed-up installation if you already have one.
Verify the result and fix an incompatible-version message
Check the server build
Read the version shown by the dedicated-server console or log after startup. This is the authoritative check for the files that are actually running. Then compare it with the branch selected by the host and by each player. “Both updated” is not enough when one side is on stable and the other is on an experimental or pinned branch.
Check each player’s branch
Have every player select the same Steam branch as the server, then fully apply that branch’s update before reconnecting. A client can be current on its own default branch and still fail to join a server pinned to an older or experimental line.
Account for mods
On a modded server, game-branch alignment is only one requirement. Every client must also have compatible mod versions. Overhauls may intentionally pin the server to an older branch; that is a compatibility requirement rather than evidence that the update failed. Check the overhaul’s supported branch before changing the server, and coordinate the client-side mod and branch changes at the same time.

- Run the appropriate command for stable or the selected branch.
- Wait for SteamCMD to complete, then start the server and read the reported build again.
- If the build still does not change, check that
<server-path>is the directory used by the startup script or service. Updating a second directory cannot change the process that is still launching the first one.
Recover from a failed or inconsistent installation
Locked or partially replaced files
Stop every dedicated-server process, including a service or scheduled restart that may have relaunched it. Confirm that no process is holding files in the installation directory, then rerun SteamCMD. Running SteamCMD as the file-owning account avoids a second failure caused by permissions.
Inconsistent Steam manifest
If repeated attempts leave the installation manifest inconsistent, the troubleshooting guidance recommends removing appmanifest_294420.acf and retrying the update. Remove only that manifest after the server is stopped; keep your external saves, configuration and mod backups untouched.

Do not overwrite your backup while diagnosing a failed start. Compare the active configuration with the saved copy, restore the known-good file when necessary, and test the world with the target branch before inviting players back. If an older branch is required by a mod, return to that supported branch rather than repeatedly forcing the newest stable build.
Managed hosting panels
Managed hosts may run SteamCMD automatically whenever the server starts or restarts. Set the desired branch in the control panel first, then restart. After the restart, verify the build shown by the panel or server console and move players to the same branch.
Restarting without checking the branch setting can leave the server on an unintended experimental or pinned line, especially when the host remembers a previous selection. The panel’s branch control is therefore the equivalent of the -beta argument in a self-hosted command; changing one without the other can produce the same incompatible-version error.

A practical decision path
You run a vanilla server and want the newest supported release
Back up the data, stop the process, run the stable command for app ID 294420, validate the files, and confirm the reported build after startup. Players should remain on the default branch unless you deliberately choose another line.
You need a test build
Confirm the branch is currently published, use the exact name with -beta, and consider a separate installation directory so the existing server remains available. Test the world and client connection before making the experimental instance your live server.
An overhaul requires an older line
Follow the overhaul’s supported branch, not the newest version number. Pin the server and clients to that branch, install matching mod versions, and keep the backup until the combination has loaded successfully.
The command reports success but the server did not change
Use the +app_info_update 1 refresh command, confirm the install path used by the startup process, and then inspect the server’s own build report. If the manifest is inconsistent, remove appmanifest_294420.acf with the server stopped and retry.
