How to get the update on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S
PLAION confirms eligibility and timing but has not published a console-specific installation walkthrough. It does not specify the exact store buttons, whether a PS4 disc grants a PS5 version, or whether PlayStation account regions must match. Treat those details as unconfirmed rather than relying on generic upgrade instructions.
If you already own a qualifying game
Once the update is released in your region, check the relevant console store or your game library for the update or current-gen version. PLAION says existing owners of either Redux game qualify at no charge, but its FAQ does not state the precise download or entitlement steps. On Xbox, the publisher has not confirmed whether the Metro Redux update uses Smart Delivery.

If you play on Xbox with a disc or digital copy
Xbox lists METRO 2033 Redux as an Xbox One title. Xbox’s general backward-compatibility guidance says most Xbox One games are playable on Series X|S. For a compatible digital game, Xbox says it appears under Ready to Install; for a compatible disc, insert it to start downloading and keep the disc in the drive to play. These are general Xbox One compatibility steps, not confirmed instructions for claiming the Metro Redux Next-Gen update. Xbox Series S plays digital games only.
If you do not own either game
Buy METRO 2033 Redux or METRO Last Light Redux for your platform. PLAION says new players automatically receive the Next-Gen update when purchasing either title. Check a retailer for your local game price; the update itself is free for existing owners.

What changes—and what does not
PLAION describes the update as adding visual, performance, and platform enhancements. It calls it a quality-of-life upgrade, not a remaster or remake, and says the games are not being ported to the current 4A Engine. The publisher also explicitly says there is no ray-tracing support. It has not published a specific console resolution or frame-rate target in the FAQ, so claims about those figures are not established there.
The FAQ says the existing ratings remain PEGI 18, ESRB M, and USK 18; it does not give a year for those classifications.
