The safest way to upgrade or repair a Framework Laptop 12 is to start with the model-specific Framework guide for the part you intend to change, then verify the component against your processor generation and the laptop’s physical interfaces. Framework publishes separate Laptop 12 procedures for memory, storage, battery, display, mainboard, cooling, input devices, wireless, cameras, speakers, hinges and other assemblies. Do not substitute a guide for another Framework model.
The Laptop 12 has one M.2 2230 NVMe SSD slot, one SO-DIMM slot and four user-selectable Expansion Cards. Framework describes it as “Easy to repair with replacement parts available in the Framework Marketplace” on its Laptop 12 product page. Availability, prices and exact part numbers change by region and stock, so confirm the current listing before ordering.

Check compatibility before buying anything
Match both the part’s interface and the Laptop 12 configuration. A physically similar component is not automatically interchangeable.
| Part or upgrade | What the official information establishes | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | One SO-DIMM slot. Maximum and supported speed depend on the installed processor generation. | Whether the system uses Intel Core Series 3 or Intel Core 13th Gen, the module’s DDR5 specification, and Framework’s generation-specific validated-memory list. |
| Storage | One M.2 2230 NVMe SSD slot. | Both the short 2230 length and the NVMe interface. A 2280 drive is not documented as a direct fit. |
| Battery, display and other modules | Framework provides Laptop 12-specific replacement procedures and Marketplace modules. | Exact Laptop 12 part or assembly, regional availability and the revision named by the current guide. |
| Expansion Cards | Four user-selectable Expansion Cards are supported. | Whether you need an installation, removal or card-locking procedure rather than a motherboard repair. |
Memory limits are processor-specific
Framework’s current memory guide lists up to 64 GB of DDR5-6400 for Intel Core Series 3 and up to 48 GB of DDR5-5200 for Intel Core 13th Gen. Those are not one universal Laptop 12 limit. Use the validated-memory list linked from the guide for your generation.
A module with a rating above the laptop’s supported speed may still function, but it will not run at its full rated speed. Framework states in its “Memory Module Replacement on Framework Laptop 12” guide: “If you install memory faster than the supported speed, the laptop will work properly, but not use the full memory speed.” Capacity, speed and generation should therefore be checked together.
Storage must be 2230 NVMe
The documented storage upgrade is an M.2 2230 NVMe SSD. “2230” describes the short card size; “NVMe” describes the storage protocol over the M.2 interface. Retail listings often emphasize the more common 2280 size, so read the dimensions rather than assuming any M.2 drive will fit. The official documentation does not establish a maximum capacity, a particular brand, a current price or stock level.
Prepare the work area and follow the safety sequence
Before beginning, have the exact guide open on another device or printed, a clean nonconductive work surface and a container for any loose non-captive screws. Framework’s memory procedure identifies the Framework Screwdriver with its T5 Torx bit; the screwdriver is included with the DIY Edition according to the product page. Confirm that your kit contains the correct bit before disassembly.
- Save your work and shut the laptop down through the operating system.
- Disconnect the charger and every accessory.
- Wait until the laptop is silent and all indicator LEDs are unlit. These checks are explicitly called out in the memory procedure.
- Read the complete component guide before removing a panel. Do not rely on a remembered sequence from a different Framework model.
- Use the specified T5 Torx driver and keep track of screw positions. In the memory guide, the bottom-cover screws are captive; replacement spare screws are not captive, so handle them differently.
- Perform only the operation described for your selected part. Do not pull on a cable or pry an assembly until the guide shows the correct release point.
- After reassembly, inspect the perimeter for an uneven cover, trapped cable or missing screw before powering on.
These are the documented starting and handling precautions for the cited procedure, not a substitute for the individual guide’s complete sequence. A repair guide may require additional power isolation or cable-disconnection steps for a particular assembly.

Before you open the laptop
- Identify the processor generation in your Laptop 12 and consult the corresponding validated-memory list.
- Choose a DDR5 SO-DIMM that fits the supported capacity and speed for that generation. A higher-rated module can downshift, but paying for speed the laptop cannot use does not increase operating speed.
- Back up important files. Memory replacement should not erase the SSD, but a backup protects against mistakes or an unrelated failure.
Use the official sequence
- Shut down from the operating system, unplug the charger and confirm that the machine is silent with its LEDs off.
- Place the closed laptop on a clean surface and use the Framework Screwdriver with its T5 Torx bit.
- Loosen the captive bottom-cover screws as shown in the Laptop 12 memory guide; do not treat a loose spare screw as captive.
- Follow the guide’s illustrated access, release and insertion steps for the SO-DIMM. Apply pressure only where the guide indicates and keep the module aligned with its notch.
- Reinstall the bottom cover and all fasteners, then start the laptop and check the reported memory in the operating system or firmware.
If the installed capacity is lower than expected, shut down and reseat the module using the guide rather than repeatedly forcing a boot. If the laptop works but reports a lower memory speed, compare that speed with the processor generation’s supported rating; a higher-rated module is allowed to operate below its label.
Storage/ SSD Replacement on Framework Laptop 12
The storage guide labels this job easy, gives 14 steps and estimates 5–15 minutes. The key buying requirement is the M.2 2230 NVMe format, not merely the words “M.2 SSD.”
Plan the data move
- Decide whether the new drive will receive a fresh operating-system installation or a clone of the existing drive.
- Make a verified backup before opening the laptop. A replacement drive does not automatically contain your files or boot environment.
- Prepare any installation or recovery media required by your operating system before removing the original drive.
Install the compatible drive
- Shut down completely, unplug accessories and charger, and confirm that the laptop is silent with no indicator LEDs lit.
- Use the Laptop 12 storage guide and its specified T5 Torx tool to open the machine and expose the storage bay.
- Remove the retaining hardware and old drive only as illustrated. Keep the SSD clip or fastener with the other parts; the catalog has a separate SSD-clip procedure if that part needs replacement.
- Insert the replacement M.2 2230 NVMe SSD in the documented orientation, secure it and close the cover.
- Boot from the prepared installation or recovery method, or restore the clone, then confirm that the firmware and operating system detect the drive.
A 2280-length M.2 drive is not established as a direct Laptop 12 replacement. If a listing does not state both 2230 and NVMe, treat compatibility as unverified until the seller provides the complete specification.

Battery Replacement on Framework Laptop 12
Framework calls the battery procedure easy and estimates 5–10 minutes. That figure is the manufacturer’s estimate, not a measured repair time. The reason to replace the battery is normal wear: Framework’s battery guide says, “All batteries are consumable items—they’ll wear out over recharge cycles and need to be replaced.”
Use only the Laptop 12 battery assembly identified by the current guide and Marketplace listing for your region. A battery is a high-energy component; do not puncture, bend, crush or use a swollen pack. If the battery is visibly swollen, hot, leaking or damaged, stop and seek qualified service rather than continuing to disassemble it.
- Shut down through the operating system, unplug the charger and remove peripherals.
- Verify that the laptop is silent and its indicator LEDs are off before opening it.
- Follow the complete Battery Replacement on Framework Laptop 12 guide for cover removal, battery isolation, fastener removal and cable disconnection.
- Install the specified replacement without folding or pinching its cable, then refit every fastener and the bottom cover.
- Reconnect power, start the laptop and check that the operating system reports a battery and begins charging normally.
The guide’s short estimate should not be used to rush a swollen-pack inspection or to skip the prescribed power-isolation steps.
Display Replacement on Framework Laptop 12
Display replacement is the most involved of the four commonly documented jobs: Framework rates it moderate and lists 39 steps with a 30–60 minute estimate. The estimate is Framework’s, not an independent timing test.
Recommended Free Tools
The replacement display is not just a bare LCD. Framework defines the part as the LCD panel with touchscreen and stylus functions built into the assembly. Verify that the replacement is the correct Laptop 12 display assembly before ordering; a panel with a similar size but without the integrated functions would not be equivalent.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Other replaceable assemblies
Not every upgrade is a plug-in board. The catalog separates small modules from larger assemblies so you can judge the scope before buying.
- Cooling: fan, heatsink and CPU thermal-interface-material procedures address different jobs. Replacing thermal material is not the same operation as replacing the fan.
- Input and controls: touchpad, input cover, top cover, power-button board and fingerprint reader each have their own procedures. The catalog also lists a power-button-to-fingerprint-reader upgrade.
- Wireless and cameras: Wi-Fi, antenna module, webcam and webcam cable are separate entries; confirm whether you need the module, cable or both.
- Audio: audio board and speakers are listed independently.
- Structural parts: bottom cover, display cover, hinges and fasteners have dedicated guides. A damaged screw or hinge may therefore require a different guide from the board or screen you originally intended to replace.
- Stylus components: the stylus battery and tip are documented separately from the display assembly.
For each of these, use the exact Laptop 12 procedure and the part named there. The catalog’s existence confirms that a guide is available; it does not mean every revision or regional SKU is interchangeable.
After the repair: checks and recovery
Run a short functional check before relying on the laptop:
- Confirm that the machine starts without unusual noise, heat or warning indicators.
- Verify the changed function: memory amount, SSD detection, battery charging, display image, touch and stylus response, or the relevant module.
- Check ports and Expansion Cards if the bottom cover was removed near their connectors.
- Inspect the cover for gaps and confirm that no screw is missing or protruding.
If the laptop will not start
Power it off, disconnect the charger and return to the component guide. Check that the replacement part is seated in the documented orientation and that every connector or fastener you handled has been restored. Do not keep cycling power while a cable may be loose.
If the new part is not detected
First verify compatibility: processor generation for memory, and 2230 NVMe specification for storage. Then reseat the part using the guide. If detection still fails, compare the part number with the Marketplace listing and contact Framework support or the seller rather than improvising a different component.
If a screw or clip is missing
Stop before closing the machine permanently. The catalog includes fastener and SSD-clip procedures, and the memory guide warns that spare replacement screws are not captive. Obtain the correct hardware instead of substituting a screw of unknown length.

Final pre-purchase and pre-repair checklist
- Have you opened the Laptop 12-specific guide rather than a procedure for another model?
- For memory, did you identify the processor generation and check its validated-memory list?
- For storage, does the SSD explicitly state M.2 2230 and NVMe?
- Is the exact battery, display assembly or module listed for your Laptop 12 revision and region?
- Do you have the Framework Screwdriver with a T5 Torx bit, a clean work surface and a safe place for screws?
- Have you backed up data and prepared recovery media where the repair may replace the boot drive?
- Will you stop if the battery is swollen, a cable or connector is damaged, or the guide does not match the hardware in front of you?
Following the current Laptop 12 guide, matching the part to the processor generation or physical interface, and treating manufacturer time estimates as estimates makes the repair predictable without turning an easy upgrade into an avoidable compatibility or safety problem.
