Use the PS5’s built-in updater first: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. If the download fails, retry it from Downloads/Uploads, then work through connectivity checks, Safe Mode, and finally a USB update. Resetting or reinstalling can erase data, so treat those options as a last resort and back up first.
Before you update
Keep the console connected to reliable power and internet access. Do not turn off the PS5 while it is installing. Sony’s official warning is direct: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause the console to be damaged.” Use only system-software files obtained from PlayStation’s official support pages; modified or incorrectly named files can be rejected.

- Save any game progress and close running games before starting.
- Make sure the console has enough free storage for the download and installation.
- If you plan to use USB recovery, have a PC or Mac with internet access, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a DualSense controller with a USB cable.
- For the manual USB file, Sony’s current guide specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. File sizes and firmware requirements can change, so check the live PlayStation instructions when you begin.
- Record the exact error code and wording if an update has already failed. The code can determine which troubleshooting route makes sense.
Do not begin a reset merely because a download is slow or because an update is not immediately offered. First establish whether the console is already current, whether the download can be retried, and whether the problem is limited to the network connection.
Update PS5 system software from Settings
This is the normal method and does not require a computer or USB drive.

- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software.
- If an update is offered, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install it. Leave the console powered on until the process finishes and the PS5 returns to normal operation.
Keep the console connected throughout both the download and installation stages. A network interruption may stop the download, but interrupting the installation itself can damage the console. Do not disconnect power simply because the screen appears inactive for a while.
If the console says it is already current, no update is required at that moment. Confirm the installed version using the version-check steps below rather than repeatedly selecting the update command.
Check which system-software version is installed
- Open Settings from the home screen.
- Go to System > System Software.
- Select Console Information.
- Read the system-software version. Sony identifies a current installation by displaying Up to date under the version information.
Record the version and any error code before troubleshooting. That information helps distinguish an unavailable update from a failed download or an installation problem. If support asks for details, provide the full code and message exactly as displayed rather than a shortened description such as “the update failed.”

A failed download does not automatically mean the console needs Safe Mode or a reset. Start with Sony’s retry procedure while the home screen is still available.
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the control center.
- Highlight the failed system-software update.
- Open its details or error information to see the displayed code.
- Choose the option to retry the download.
Let the retry complete without launching other large downloads. If several attempts fail, move to the connection and error-code checks below. Sony directs users with multiple failed downloads to the manual-update procedure rather than repeatedly starting the same failed job.
A retry is most useful when the update item is still visible in Downloads/Uploads. If the console returns to the home screen but the update no longer appears, check the installed version, restart the console, and then try the Settings path again before moving to Safe Mode.
Check internet and the displayed error
When the PS5 can still reach the home screen, connect it directly to the router with a LAN cable and try the Settings update again. A wired connection removes wireless interference and weak-signal problems from the test. If you must use Wi-Fi, place the console where it has a clear, stable signal and avoid moving it during the download.

Restart the PS5 and network equipment before trying again. For the error code WS-116522-7, Sony specifically recommends restarting the console, preferring a wired connection where possible, checking wireless placement, and restarting the modem or router after waiting at least five minutes. Those steps are guidance for that code; they are not a universal diagnosis for every update error.
Write down the exact code and wording shown on your console. Different codes can indicate different causes, and replacing files or resetting storage without the code can create unnecessary data loss. Do not assume that a network fix for WS-116522-7 applies to an unrelated code; follow the support instructions associated with the code you actually see.

Use Safe Mode to update the console
Safe Mode starts the PS5 with a limited menu so you can run recovery operations when the normal interface cannot complete an update. It is also the route used for a manual USB update. Safe Mode is not itself a factory reset: the menu contains both non-destructive and destructive choices, so read each option carefully.
- Turn the PS5 off completely. Do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after you hear the second beep, which occurs several seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Choose Update System Software from the Safe Mode menu.
Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for installation to finish. If Safe Mode can download the update, allow that process to complete before attempting a USB installation. If the update still cannot be obtained over the network, use the manual file method.
A controller connected wirelessly may not work in Safe Mode, which is why Sony’s procedure calls for a USB cable. If the controller is not recognized, reconnect the cable before selecting an option. Never choose a reset option just to leave Safe Mode unless you understand its data consequences.
Update from a USB drive
The USB method is useful when the PS5 cannot download the file reliably or cannot reach the update service. It requires a PC or Mac connected to the internet and a compatible USB drive. The drive can be used without erasing other files only if the required folders and filename are correct, but backing up its contents first is prudent because formatting may be necessary.
Use a USB flash drive only as an alternative to the network route; buying a particular brand, capacity, or transfer speed is not required by Sony’s instructions. The important requirements are the FAT32 or exFAT filesystem, the correct folder hierarchy, sufficient free space, and the official file.
Prepare the USB drive
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Other filesystems are not accepted by the PS5 update process.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Download the official PS5 system-software update file on the computer or Mac.
- Save the file inside the
UPDATEfolder with the exact uppercase namePS5UPDATE.PUP.
The final path must be PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not add a second extension such as .PUP.PUP, change the capitalization, place the file beside the folders, or nest PS5 inside another folder. Approximately 1.1 GB of free space is specified for the current update file, but that figure can change with a later release.

The PS5 folder and UPDATE folder must also be directly at the drive’s top level, not inside a download folder or another directory.
Install the USB update in Safe Mode
- Safely eject the USB drive from the computer.
- Turn the PS5 off.
- Insert the prepared USB drive into the console.
- Enter Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep, then connect the controller by USB and press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software.
- Choose Update from USB Storage Device, then select OK.
Keep the console powered on while it verifies, copies, and installs the file. Interrupting installation can damage the console. Do not remove the drive until the PS5 has finished and returned to normal operation.
If the PS5 does not recognize the USB file
- Confirm that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, not NTFS or another format.
- Check the folder hierarchy character for character:
PS5, thenUPDATE. - Verify the filename is exactly
PS5UPDATE.PUPin uppercase. - Make sure the file is inside
UPDATE, not in the drive’s root directory. - Download a fresh official file if the existing download is incomplete or corrupt.
- Check that the drive has approximately 1.1 GB of free space or more for the current package, while remembering that Sony can change the requirement.
If the structure and file are correct but Safe Mode still rejects them, recheck the live PlayStation instructions and obtain a fresh official download. Do not rename a regular game or application file to make it look like firmware. The console accepts only the official update package.

Update file versus reinstallation file
An ordinary update file and a full reinstallation package are not interchangeable. The ordinary USB procedure uses PS5UPDATE.PUP and the Update from USB Storage Device command. Reinstallation uses a separate package and a different Safe Mode choice. Download the package that matches the operation you intend to perform, and follow the current PlayStation page for its exact filename and folder requirements.
Using a reinstallation package prematurely can erase user data, while using an ordinary update file when the console requires reinstallation will not accomplish the same recovery. If you are unsure which file a support instruction means, stop before selecting a reset and verify the wording on the official page.
Understand Safe Mode options before selecting one
Safe Mode includes non-destructive and destructive choices. Read the description on the screen before confirming an option.

Cloud saves, USB backups, screenshots, installed games, and local settings should be treated as at risk before either reset option. A reset is not a routine way to install an update. If the console can still start, back up what you need before confirming a destructive choice, and make sure you understand that reinstalling removes the installed system software as well as user data.
Reinstall system software only as a last resort
Reinstallation is more extensive than an update. It removes the current system software and user data, then installs a fresh system-software package. Sony identifies it as a last troubleshooting step. Before proceeding, back up anything you cannot replace and make sure you have the official reinstallation file and the USB structure Sony specifies for that operation; the reinstallation package is not interchangeable with an ordinary update file.

- Back up data if the console can still start and your backup method is available.
- Prepare the official reinstallation file exactly as Sony’s current instructions require.
- Enter Safe Mode with the console off, a controller connected by USB, and the power button held to the second beep.
- Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) and confirm only when you accept the data deletion.
If reinstallation fails, Sony says the console may need repair. Use official PlayStation repair support rather than opening the hardware or following unverified firmware-repair procedures. Keep the displayed error code, the version you attempted to install, and the steps already tried so support can see the full history.

A practical escalation order
Follow this sequence so each step adds recovery capability without jumping straight to data loss:
- Run Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software.
- If the download fails, inspect the item in Downloads/Uploads and retry it.
- Record the exact error code, restart the console, and test a wired LAN connection.
- For code WS-116522-7, also restart the modem or router after waiting at least five minutes and improve wireless placement if Wi-Fi is unavoidable.
- Use Safe Mode’s Update System Software option.
- Prepare

What to do after a successful update
Let the PS5 restart fully before launching a game or disconnecting power. Return to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and verify that the version is shown as current, with Up to date displayed under the version. If the console reports that it is current but a game or service still displays a compatibility warning, record that message separately; it is not evidence that the system update itself failed.

Keep the USB drive unchanged until the console has restarted successfully, then eject it from the computer if you no longer need it. If the same update repeatedly fails after a verified file, stable connection, and Safe Mode attempt, preserve the error code and contact official support or repair rather than repeatedly interrupting installations.
