Back up your iPhone, connect it to power and Wi‑Fi, then open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is offered, tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen instructions. The exact release shown depends on your iPhone model and the iOS version already installed; the Software Update screen is the authority for what your device can install.
Before updating: check compatibility, power and backup
Apple’s current major release is iOS 27, but not every iPhone can run it. Apple lists iOS 27 for iPhone 11 models and later, plus the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). An older iPhone should install the newest version Apple offers for that model rather than being expected to receive iOS 27.

Apple Support says, “Before you update, back up your device to keep a copy of your important information.” That guidance appears in How to download iOS 27, published September 21, 2026. Make an iCloud or computer backup before starting, especially if the phone contains photographs, messages or work data you cannot replace.
A practical pre-update checklist
- Identify the model: open Settings > General > About if you are unsure which iPhone generation you have.
- Back up first: use an iCloud or computer backup so important information has a separate copy.
- Use a power source: keep the iPhone plugged in during downloading and installation.
- Use Wi‑Fi: wireless updating requires a network connection, and Wi‑Fi is preferable for a large download.
- Check storage: open Settings > General > iPhone Storage if space may be tight.
- Know your passcode: the iPhone may ask for it before the installation proceeds.
- Plan for a restart: the phone will be unavailable while it verifies and installs the update, so begin when you do not need to use it immediately.
The backup is a safety measure, not a requirement to move your files manually. The update process is designed to retain the information already on the iPhone, but Apple specifically recommends keeping a copy before installing.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Update your iPhone wirelessly from Settings
This is the simplest route and the one to try first.
- Connect the iPhone to a charger.
- Join a reliable Wi‑Fi network.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Wait while the phone checks Apple’s update service. Read the version name and release details shown for your device.
- If an update is available, tap Download and Install. Enter the passcode if requested.
- Leave the iPhone connected to power and Wi‑Fi while it downloads, verifies and restarts. Do not turn it off during the installation.
The Software Update page can show the currently installed version, an available update and any release notes Apple provides. Read that screen rather than relying on a version number seen in an article, video or on someone else’s phone. If no update is listed, the absence may reflect the model, the installed version or the fact that the release is not being offered wirelessly.
The phrase “latest iOS” is device-specific. Apple’s documentation establishes the iOS 27 major release, but a later point release may be offered to one phone and not another because of its model or installed software. Use the version displayed at Settings > General > Software Update, not a number copied from another iPhone.

After downloading, the iPhone verifies the software and restarts to install it. Keep it connected to power and do not repeatedly cancel the process. A restart or a period showing an Apple logo can be part of the normal installation sequence. If the phone eventually reports that the update failed, follow the redownload steps in the troubleshooting section rather than deleting personal content at random.
Turn on automatic iOS updates
If you do not want to check manually, open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Apple provides separate controls for downloading and installing updates.
Automatic installation
When automatic installation is enabled, Apple describes the iPhone installing an update overnight while it is charging and connected to Wi‑Fi. You receive a notification before installation. Leave the phone on its charger during the hours you expect it to update. Automatic installation does not mean the phone ignores compatibility limits; it installs an update that Apple makes available for that particular device.
Automatic downloading
Automatic Download downloads update files in the background so you can install them later. This is useful when you want the file ready but need to choose the restart time yourself. You still need to return to Software Update and approve installation when prompted. Downloading the file does not change the iOS version until installation completes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich automatic setting should you use?
- Download and install automatically: convenient if the iPhone normally remains charging overnight on Wi‑Fi and you want minimal maintenance.
- Download automatically, install manually: useful if you want the update ready but need to control when the phone restarts.
- Manual updates: appropriate if you prefer to review the offered release and its notes every time.
What to do when no update appears
A missing update does not necessarily mean the phone is broken. The Software Update screen only lists releases compatible with that device and its current software.

- Confirm the model in Settings > General > About, then compare it with Apple’s compatibility list.
- Install the newest release the phone offers; an older model may be current for its hardware even though it cannot run iOS 27.
- Make sure Wi‑Fi is working and the phone has enough free storage.
- Keep the phone connected to power while checking again.
- Try the computer method if Apple says the update is not available wirelessly for your device.
Do not treat a particular point-release number as universal. Availability can differ by model and by the version currently installed. A phone that is several releases behind may show a different offered package from one that is already on a recent version.
Update with a Mac or Windows PC
A wired update is the fallback when wireless updating is unavailable, the update does not appear, or installation repeatedly fails. Apple supports Finder on macOS Catalina or later, and iTunes on Windows PCs or Macs running macOS Mojave or earlier.
Finder on macOS Catalina or later
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a compatible cable. Match the connector at the phone end to the phone’s port and the connector at the computer end to an available Mac port or adapter.
- Unlock the iPhone. Approve Trust if the phone asks whether to trust the computer.
- Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
- Open the device’s general management view and choose the option to check for an update.
- Choose Download and Update when an update is offered, then follow the prompts on both devices.
- Keep the cable connected until Finder reports that the process is complete and the iPhone has restarted.
If Finder does not show the iPhone, first check that it is unlocked and that the trust prompt was accepted. Confirm that the cable is fully connected at both ends. A cable or adapter is relevant to this route only; it is not needed for a normal update from Settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
iTunes on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier
- Install or open iTunes, then connect the iPhone by cable.
- Unlock the phone and accept the trust prompt if it appears.
- Select the iPhone in iTunes and choose the option to check for an update.
- Download and install the offered release, leaving the cable connected throughout the restart.
Use the iTunes workflow for a Windows PC or a Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier. A Mac running macOS Catalina or a newer macOS version uses Finder instead of iTunes for this device-management task.
| Route | Best when | What you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless (Settings) | The phone has Wi‑Fi, power and sufficient storage | iPhone, charger and Wi‑Fi | May not be offered for every release or may fail because of storage, server or network problems. |
| Finder | Wireless updating fails or the phone does not list the update | Mac running macOS Catalina or later, compatible cable and internet connection | Requires access to a Mac and the correct cable. |
| iTunes | Using Windows or a Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier | Windows PC or older Mac, iTunes, compatible cable and internet connection | Requires the older iTunes-based workflow and a computer. |
A cable is needed only for the computer route; it is not required for a normal wireless update. Apple does not identify one connector that fits every iPhone and computer, so match both ports before connecting. If the cable does not fit, use the appropriate adapter or another compatible cable rather than forcing the connection. Do not buy a cable solely to perform a wireless update.
Fix common iOS update problems
Apple identifies five broad causes of wireless update trouble: the iPhone does not support the software, storage is insufficient, the download is taking a long time, the phone cannot reach the update server, or the installation does not complete. Work through the branch that matches the symptom instead of repeating the same failed attempt without changing the relevant condition.
“Not enough storage” appears
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see what is consuming space.
- Remove unneeded photos, videos or downloaded content, or move irreplaceable material to a safe backup before deleting it.
- Enable Offload Unused Apps if you want iOS to remove unused apps while retaining their documents and data.
- If the update offers to temporarily remove apps, accept the prompt only if you are comfortable with that choice. Apple says those apps can be reinstalled after the update.
- Return to Software Update and try again.
Do not assume that deleting a single app will solve every storage warning. The iPhone Storage screen shows where space is being used, allowing you to target large items. Keep a backup of anything you cannot replace before removing it.
The download is very slow
Download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed. Keep the iPhone on Wi‑Fi and avoid downloading other content at the same time. Leave it connected to power rather than repeatedly cancelling and restarting the transfer. A slow transfer is different from an installation failure; if the progress is still moving, allowing it to continue may be preferable to starting over.

The phone cannot contact Apple’s update server
Keep the iPhone connected to power and verify that Wi‑Fi can reach other services. Apple notes that VPN or proxy connections might prevent contact with update servers. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy, if one is active, and retry on a normal Wi‑Fi connection. If the network is managed by a school or employer, its filtering may require the network administrator’s help.
The update downloaded but will not finish
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find the downloaded iOS update in the list and tap it.
- Choose Delete Update.
- Restart the iPhone, reconnect it to power and Wi‑Fi, then return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the file again.
Apple recommends this redownload step when an update fails. If the update is not listed in iPhone Storage, or the second attempt also fails, use Finder or iTunes instead. Deleting the downloaded update removes the installer file; it does not erase your personal photos, messages or other content.
The update is not available wirelessly
Some updates are not offered over the air. Connect the phone to a compatible Mac or Windows PC and use Finder or iTunes. This is also the supported fallback when the Software Update screen remains empty despite a compatible model, working Wi‑Fi and adequate storage.
The phone appears stuck during installation
Keep it connected to power and do not disconnect a computer cable while Finder or iTunes is working. An update can restart the iPhone more than once. If the process ultimately reports an error or returns to the previous iOS version, retry after deleting the downloaded update; if that does not resolve it, use the computer route.
Choosing the right method
- Choose wireless updating when the update is listed, Wi‑Fi is reliable and the iPhone has enough storage.
- Choose Finder when you have a Mac on macOS Catalina or later and wireless updating fails or is unavailable.
- Choose iTunes when your computer is a Windows PC or a Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier.
- Check compatibility first whenever the update is missing; a model limitation cannot be fixed by changing cables or networks.
The computer route is not automatically a newer or better release. It is an alternative delivery method. The release offered through Finder or iTunes still depends on the iPhone model and the software currently installed. Use a computer because wireless updating is unavailable or unsuccessful, not because a cable is required for every update.
After the update
Unlock the iPhone after it restarts and confirm the installed release at Settings > General > Software Update. If automatic updates are enabled, review the Automatic Updates screen so you know whether the phone is set to download, install, or both. Check that essential apps and services open normally, and keep your backup until you are satisfied that important data is present.
If the phone shows an update still waiting to install, follow the prompt on the Software Update page rather than downloading the same file repeatedly. If automatic downloading is enabled, an installer may already be present even though installation has not yet occurred.

Recommended Free Tools
Do I need to pay for a cable?
No cable is needed for the normal Settings method. A cable is needed only for a computer-based update, and it must match both the iPhone port and the computer port or adapter. Apple does not specify one cable that fits every combination.
Why does the update take so long?
Apple says download time depends on the update’s size and internet speed. Keep the phone on Wi‑Fi and power, and avoid other downloads. If the transfer is progressing, do not repeatedly cancel it.
Will iOS delete my apps to make room?
If prompted, the iPhone may temporarily remove apps and reinstall them after the update. You can also review Settings > General > iPhone Storage and enable Offload Unused Apps. Back up important information before deleting content yourself.
What if a VPN or proxy is enabled?
Apple notes that VPN or proxy connections might prevent the iPhone from reaching update servers. Temporarily disconnect the VPN or proxy and retry on a normal Wi‑Fi connection. A managed school or workplace network may require administrator assistance.
