If a player’s injury status changes, check whether the team has confirmed him inactive, note his game time and your league’s lineup deadline, then move him out of the active slot and put an eligible replacement in. A Questionable tag means availability is uncertain—not that the player is definitely out—so check again near kickoff.
First, check the status and the deadline
A fantasy injury label and an official inactive announcement are different things. NFL Fantasy describes Questionable as uncertain availability and often a game-time decision. ESPN says its fantasy player status follows the NFL’s official injury and inactive list. Use the label as a reason to monitor the player, not as proof he will miss the game. NFL Fantasy’s player-status guidance and ESPN’s player-status explanation describe these distinctions.

Find the player’s specific kickoff and your league’s lineup rules before making the move. Deadlines may apply player by player, so an early game can lock while later games remain open. ESPN says roster moves involving a player may be made until that player’s team is scheduled to begin its game in the scoring period. Yahoo’s default daily-change leagues lock a player at his real-life game start, while private leagues with weekly roster settings can use a different deadline. Your league’s settings control; do not assume every player stays movable until Sunday kickoff.

Move the injured or unavailable player to the bench, then put a replacement who is eligible for that position or flex slot into the open active spot. If the replacement already occupies another active slot, move that player to the correct slot as part of the swap. Check the whole lineup afterward: the app may require the outgoing player to be benched or moved before it will let you fill an occupied slot.

ESPN Fantasy
- In the app, open your team’s Roster.
- Tap the position button beside the player you want to move and choose an eligible position, such as Bench.
- Select the position beside the player you want to swap with. ESPN displays a confirmation, and the move saves automatically.
- On the web, open My Team, choose Move beside the player, then select Here beside the destination slot. Check for the green confirmation banner.
ESPN’s general deadline is the scheduled start of the player’s game in the scoring period; confirm the move before that time. See ESPN’s full lineup steps and deadline guidance.
Yahoo Fantasy
- Open your team roster and choose Swap Mode.
- Select the position occupied by the player you are replacing.
- Choose a highlighted eligible slot for the replacement, then verify the resulting lineup.
In leagues that allow daily lineup changes, Active-to-Bench moves are available until the player’s scheduled game start. Weekly-roster leagues can have a different deadline, so check the league’s roster setting rather than relying on the default. Yahoo explains lineup locks and league roster settings.

NFL Fantasy
NFL Fantasy offers Auto-Swap Inactives for eligible cases: it can replace a player projected to score zero with the highest-ranked eligible backup in the order you set. NFL Support says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before the scheduled game time; that is approximate guidance, not a guaranteed announcement time. What to know about automatic lineup tools
Automation may not incorporate an injury update that arrives after you set it. Yahoo says its Start Active Players / Assistant GM feature uses injury status as of the time it is enabled and does not account for a later injury. Reopen your lineup after news changes rather than assuming the tool will redo the decision. NFL Auto-Swap is narrower: it depends on the player being projected for zero, an eligible backup, and your preselected backup order. Check IR eligibility separately
A fantasy IR slot is not the same as an active lineup slot. ESPN permits players with Out or IR status in its IR slot, subject to league settings. If a player there moves from Out to having no designation, ESPN says the roster becomes invalid and must be corrected. Follow the app’s eligibility warning and move the player to an allowed roster position before making other roster changes. ESPN’s player-status and IR guidance covers the applicable statuses.

Quick checklist before kickoff
- Identify whether your league uses daily or weekly lineup changes.
- Check the player’s latest status and whether the NFL team has declared him inactive.
- Look up that player’s kickoff and make the move before the applicable lock.
- Bench or otherwise move the unavailable player, then fill the opening with an eligible replacement.
- Confirm the app saved the change and review position and flex eligibility across the lineup.
- If you use an automatic tool, check whether later injury news is reflected.
- If the player is in a fantasy IR slot, resolve any roster-invalid warning after a status change.
