Update both documents to show the job’s real end date, then reposition them around the work you want next. Your CV or resume should lead with a focused target, relevant skills and substantiated achievements. LinkedIn should show the former role as finished, describe your current professional direction and use Open to Work only at a visibility level you genuinely accept. Keep dates and job descriptions consistent across your CV, LinkedIn and application forms, and prepare a brief, honest explanation for conversations.
This guide uses CV and resume interchangeably. The practical guidance is U.S.-oriented; conventions for date formats, photos, personal information and layoff disclosures vary by country and employer.

Start with an accurate employment record
A layoff does not change what you accomplished, but it does change the status of the job. Leaving a former employer marked as current creates a factual inconsistency that can confuse recruiters, background-check teams and anyone comparing your application with your LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn Help instructs people who have left a job to switch off the setting that says they currently work there. CareerOneStop likewise advises truthful dates on a resume.
Build one fact sheet before editing
Write down the information that must remain identical everywhere. Use the employer’s official name and your official title, rather than an informal nickname or an inflated title. Add the location when it helps distinguish the role, the exact start date, the exact end date and the accomplishments you can discuss accurately.
#1 Best Overall
- Employer and title: Copy the wording from employment records, an offer letter or a payroll document.
- Dates: Record month and year at minimum for your own master file. Keep the full dates available for applications and background checks.
- Scope: Note the products, systems, customers, budgets, team size or regions you actually supported.
- Evidence: For each potential achievement, capture the situation, the action you took and the result. Keep only details you can substantiate.
- Next target: List the role titles, skills and problem areas represented in the jobs you intend to pursue.
This fact sheet is your source of truth. Compare every edited version with it before publishing. CareerOneStop recommends that the work-history section agree with the summary and skills sections and with LinkedIn; consistency is more credible than trying to make a gap disappear.
Use the real end date, even if the layoff was recent
On the CV, enter the month and year employment ended. On LinkedIn, open the former Experience entry, turn off I currently work here, and enter the end month and year. Do not leave the role current while you search, and do not move the end date forward to cover a period when you were not employed. If severance, garden leave or a contract end creates an unusual situation, use the date your employment actually ended under the employer’s records and be ready to explain the distinction if asked.
Some applicants display only years when a gap is under a year. CareerOneStop notes that this can be an option, but some application systems request months or even days. Keep complete dates in your master record, follow each application’s instructions and use the same level of precision wherever the form permits it.
Refocus the CV on the role you want next
The first third of the document should answer a hiring manager’s first question: what can this person do for this vacancy? A former employer’s name and the circumstances of the layoff are less useful than a clear professional direction supported by evidence.
Construct a focused opening
Place a target role or professional focus near the top, followed by a short summary if it adds information. A strong opening can identify your specialty, the environments in which you have worked and the outcomes you repeatedly deliver. It should not claim a skill you cannot demonstrate in the work history.
For example, a software professional who is pursuing platform engineering might lead with a heading such as Platform engineer focused on reliable cloud delivery, then summarize experience with deployment automation, observability and incident reduction. The wording should describe the candidate’s actual background, not mirror a posting mechanically.
Turn duties into substantiated accomplishments
Reorder bullets so the evidence most relevant to the target vacancy appears first. A useful internal test is situation, action and result: what was happening, what did you do, and what changed? Include a metric only when it is real and supportable. A percentage invented to sound impressive can create a credibility problem during an interview or reference check.
- Replace a duty such as Responsible for build pipelines with a factual account of the pipeline work, the tools involved and the resulting improvement, if you can document it.
- Explain the scale that matters to the target role, such as the number of services, release frequency, customer segment or compliance requirement.
- Separate your contribution from a team-wide result. Use led, implemented or designed only when those verbs accurately describe your role.
- Remove old bullets that do not support the next job, while retaining enough context for the reader to understand your progression.
Match terminology without keyword stuffing
Read several target postings and identify recurring terms for tools, methods, domains and outcomes. Use a term when it accurately describes your experience. Do not add a technology because it appears in a posting, and do not repeat a keyword in every bullet. CareerOneStop recommends relevant posting terminology, a focused summary and skills that align with the work descriptions. A human reader should be able to see the evidence behind each important term.
Choose a format that fits your history
| Format | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Chronological | Your work history is continuous and the next role is in the same area. | Dates and progression are prominent, so a recent layoff and any gap are easy to see. |
| Combination | You need to foreground transferable skills, a career pivot or a gap while preserving detailed employment history. | It requires a clear skills section followed by accurate, sufficiently detailed jobs. |
| Functional | A skills-based presentation is important in a specific circumstance. | CareerOneStop warns that sparse work-history detail can be misread or rejected by some applicant-tracking systems. |
For most technical searches, a chronological or combination format gives the reader both context and evidence. If you use a combination format, do not hide the dates in a block of skills. Keep each employer, title and period visible so the document remains easy to verify.
Keep the layout machine-readable
Use standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience and Education, and keep typography and date formatting consistent. Avoid decorative text boxes, unusual symbols and graphics that can cause an applicant-tracking system to omit content. A clean layout also lets a human reviewer find your most relevant evidence quickly. Save a master copy with complete details and create a tailored copy for each application without changing the underlying facts.
Decide how to handle a gap
CareerOneStop says you do not need to state the reason for an employment gap on the resume. A short gap can simply appear between two truthful date ranges. If a longer gap contains relevant activity—such as coursework, open-source work, consulting or caregiving—you may include that activity when it is accurate and useful, labeling it clearly rather than presenting it as employment with a company that did not employ you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not alter dates to disguise the gap. If an application asks for month-level dates, provide them. If it allows years only, use the same year-only convention throughout that application and retain the precise record for later forms.
Update LinkedIn so it agrees with the CV
LinkedIn has separate places for past work, professional positioning and job-search preferences. Use each field for its intended purpose rather than placing the layoff explanation everywhere.
Close the former Experience entry
- Open your profile and edit the former job in the Experience section.
- Turn off I currently work here.
- Enter the actual end month and year, then save.
- Check the title, employer name, location and description against your fact sheet and CV.
LinkedIn describes Experience as the place for past and current work. Once the role is closed, its description can emphasize accomplishments that support your next search. You do not need to write that the role ended in a layoff in the Experience title.
Rewrite the headline for the next role
The headline appears beside your name in search results and messages, so make it describe the work you want to be found for. A headline that says only Former senior developer reports history but not direction. A more useful version combines the target function with genuine strengths, such as Data platform engineer | Python, SQL and reliable pipeline delivery. Use a job-seeking phrase only if it helps your networking goal; the headline should still communicate professional value.
Use the About section for context
LinkedIn identifies the headline and summary (now commonly labeled About) as places where a person can describe unemployment or a current search. Use the opening lines for your professional focus, then add the capabilities and outcomes most relevant to target roles. A short statement that you are seeking a particular kind of work is enough; the section does not need a detailed account of the layoff.
Keep the claims in About consistent with the Skills and Experience sections. If a technology appears in the headline or summary, show where you used it or explain the level of experience. Remove language that implies you are still employed by the former company.
Review job preferences and Open to Work
In LinkedIn’s Open to Work settings, review the job titles, locations or location types, desired start date and employment types. These preferences affect recommendations and, depending on the visibility choice, the signal recruiters see. LinkedIn says the settings can be edited or removed.
| Visibility choice | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| All LinkedIn Members | Shows a public availability signal within LinkedIn and adds the Open to Work photo frame. | People at the former company and other members can see the signal. |
| Recruiters only | Shares the signal with people using LinkedIn Recruiter. | LinkedIn takes steps to hide the interest from recruiters at your current company but cannot guarantee complete privacy. |
| Visible only to you | Uses your preferences for job recommendations without displaying an availability signal. | It does not announce your availability to recruiters. |
Choose based on your actual privacy preference, not on an assumption that one setting guarantees interviews. Recruiter-only is less public, not secret. If confidentiality is essential, use the private setting and contact selected people directly through your network.

A resume does not have to volunteer the reason a job ended. CareerOneStop says an employment-gap reason can be addressed in a cover letter or interview, and the Associated Press quoted Goodwin Recruiting CEO Andy Decker advising candidates to answer honestly if asked rather than putting the explanation on the resume. His guidance was to address it directly, own it, acknowledge it and move on.
Use a three-part answer
- State the fact: Say that the role ended in a restructuring, reduction in force or other accurate description.
- Give only necessary context: Clarify whether it was a company-wide or team reduction if that is true and useful.
- Return to the future: Name the work you are pursuing and connect it to strengths demonstrated in your prior role.
A truthful structure is: My role ended in a company-wide reduction. I am now focused on platform reliability work, where my experience improving deployment and observability can help teams release safely. Change every element to match your circumstances; do not describe a company-wide reduction if the event was different.
Practice until the answer is calm and brief. Avoid blaming the former employer, speculating about confidential decisions or turning the conversation into a chronology of every week since the layoff. If the interviewer asks a follow-up, answer it plainly and then discuss a relevant accomplishment.

Use this checklist after each substantial edit. It catches the errors that most often undermine an otherwise strong application.
- The former job has a truthful end date on the CV, LinkedIn and every application form.
- LinkedIn no longer says I currently work here for the former employer.
- Employer name, title, location and core responsibilities match across documents.
- The CV opening identifies the target role or professional focus.
- Summary, skills and achievement bullets support one another with concrete evidence.
- Every metric is real, explainable and attributable to your contribution.
- Posting terminology appears only where it accurately describes your experience.
- The chosen CV format preserves enough work-history detail for a recruiter and an applicant-tracking system.
- The gap is shown truthfully, without altered dates or an unexplained claim of employment.
- The LinkedIn headline and About section describe what you want next, not a job you no longer hold.
- Open to Work titles, locations, start date and employment types reflect your actual search.
- You understand who can see your selected Open to Work setting and do not rely on recruiter-only visibility as a privacy guarantee.
- Your layoff explanation is short, factual and practiced.
Common problems and precise fixes
The former role still appears current
Symptom: LinkedIn shows the job with no end date, or the CV says Present after your departure.
Fix: Correct the Experience setting and the CV date before sending another application. Compare the result with your fact sheet.
The document is honest but points backward
Symptom: The first page spends most of its space on an old title, a long duty list or the layoff itself.
Fix: Move the target focus, relevant skills and strongest evidence into the opening section. Keep historical detail that helps the target role and remove unrelated material.

Keywords are present but unsupported
Symptom: A skill appears in the headline or Skills section but nowhere in the work descriptions.
Fix: Add a truthful example of where and how you used it, or remove the term. Matching a posting is not a reason to claim experience you do not have.
The functional format raises more questions than it answers
Symptom: Skills are grouped at the top, but employers cannot see what you did in each job or when you did it.
Fix: Switch to chronological or combination formatting, or expand each job with accurate dates and accomplishment bullets. CareerOneStop cautions that a functional resume with little detailed work history can be misinterpreted or rejected by some applicant-tracking systems.

Symptom: The Open to Work frame appears on your photo, or colleagues can see the signal.
Fix: Revisit Open to Work visibility. All LinkedIn Members is public within the platform; Recruiters only is not guaranteed private; Visible only to you removes the profile signal while retaining preferences for recommendations.
You are tempted to explain the gap with changed dates
Symptom: The CV end date differs from payroll records or from LinkedIn.
Fix: Restore the actual date everywhere. A clear, practiced explanation is safer than a discrepancy that can surface during an application or background check.

What a finished update should accomplish
When the edits are complete, a reader should be able to identify three things quickly: when the former job ended, what you are qualified to do now and how to contact or evaluate you for that work. The layoff is a factual part of your history, not the organizing principle of your documents. Accurate dates protect credibility; targeted evidence gives recruiters a reason to continue; intentional LinkedIn visibility lets you search at a level of openness that fits your circumstances.
