FFmpeg’s official documentation describes ways to join media files, but does not document live rereading of an edited concat list. To change upcoming videos without disconnecting YouTube, use a playback controller that can switch inputs while keeping one encoder output running. If your setup cannot do that, plan a controlled restart rather than counting on an undocumented hot reload.
First identify which playlist you mean
“Playlist” can refer to different parts of a live-video pipeline. Updating one does not necessarily update another:

- Local concat input list: A text file that tells FFmpeg which media files to read. Changing this file on disk is not documented as a way to alter the queue already being read by a running FFmpeg process.
- HLS output playlist: A manifest generated by FFmpeg’s HLS muxer as it produces segments. This is output for a segmented stream, not the local list of source videos.
- Playback-system queue: A queue managed by a separate player or controller. If it can switch files while keeping the encoder connected to YouTube, it is the relevant kind of queue for changing upcoming videos without restarting the broadcast.
FFmpeg’s HLS documentation says VOD playlist mode requires that the playlist not change. That output behavior does not make a local concat input list dynamically editable.
Can you add or replace entries in a running concat playlist?
Do not assume so. The FFmpeg FAQ documents the concat filter, concat demuxer, and concat protocol as methods for joining files; it does not describe a live editor or promise that FFmpeg will reread an edited local list during a run. Treat the list as the input definition supplied to the process unless documentation for your specific setup establishes otherwise.

If the current FFmpeg process has already started from a concat list, editing the file may leave its active input unchanged. A file edit alone is not a reliable live-update procedure.
Choose a method for the change you need
Use a live input controller to keep the YouTube connection up
For a changing schedule, use a player or controller designed to select or queue sources while presenting one continuous output to a still-running encoder. The queue belongs to that controller; FFmpeg remains responsible for encoding and sending the stream. Validate the specific controller, command, and source files before relying on this arrangement for an event.
A handoff is not automatically gapless. Check that adjacent sources work with your pipeline, including their codecs, resolution, frame rate, timestamps, audio presence and layout, and the controller’s transition behavior. The cited FFmpeg documentation does not guarantee seamless switching across arbitrary files or establish one turnkey live-queue controller.

Use a controlled restart if the input cannot change live
If your existing setup reads a fixed concat input and has no tested way to hand off sources, schedule a stop and restart. This is more predictable than editing the file and hoping the running process notices. Account for the interruption and any YouTube-side steps your specific stream setup requires; the reviewed documentation does not establish a universal restart procedure for every command or channel.
Understand the concatenation choices
FFmpeg’s FAQ lists three concatenation approaches. They solve file-joining problems; none, by itself, establishes that a running process will reload an edited queue.

The appropriate method for joining files depends on the media and whether encoding is needed. That choice is separate from the question of who controls a changing live queue.

If you use HLS to ingest to YouTube
HLS is a segmented ingest method, not a way to edit the local concat input. YouTube Help says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. Its stated HLS requirements are specific to that ingest path:

- Use a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments.
- Do not use byte ranges.
- Send segments using HTTPS POST/PUT.
- Do not encrypt the stream except with HTTPS.
These requirements apply to YouTube HLS ingest; they are not general settings for an RTMP stream or instructions for hot-reloading an FFmpeg concat list. Choose the ingest protocol your YouTube setup specifies, and factor HLS’s stated higher latency into timing expectations.
Test the handoff before a live event
- Identify the actual queue source: a concat input file, an HLS output playlist, or a separate player/controller.
- Confirm how that component changes its queue. Do not treat an on-disk edit as a live update unless its documentation explicitly supports that behavior.
- Check the source files for compatible codecs, dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, and audio streams. Test the transition behavior with the actual files and command.
- Run a controlled stream test and check for gaps, frozen video, timestamp problems, or audio loss during a source change.
- If the handoff fails or the controller cannot keep the encoder output running, use a planned restart instead of depending on an unverified live edit.
Common problems and practical fixes
The edited list has no effect
Likely cause: The running FFmpeg process is continuing to use the input definition it started with; live rereading is not documented for the local concat list. Fix: Use a queue controller designed for live source selection, or schedule a controlled restart.

The stream stays connected but the transition is not seamless
Likely cause: The sources or transition path differ in codec, resolution, frame rate, timestamps, or audio configuration, or the controller does not handle the handoff as expected. Fix: Test the actual files and pipeline, and normalize or otherwise adapt sources where your setup requires it. Do not assume arbitrary media will switch gaplessly.
An HLS playlist update is mistaken for a source-queue update
Likely cause: The HLS manifest describes output segments, while a concat list describes input files. Fix: Change the component that owns source selection; meet YouTube’s HLS requirements separately if HLS is your ingest protocol.

Likely cause: HLS sends segments rather than the continuous stream used by RTMP. Fix: Allow for the higher latency YouTube documents, and verify the required segment duration and rolling-playlist limits.
