Keep the app and speakers connected to the same home network while you follow the prompts. The Sonos app, speaker system, Sonos Ace headphones and S1 Controller have different update paths, so choosing the correct branch prevents most confusion.

What you are updating
“Sonos update” can mean either the mobile application or the software installed on your speakers. They are related but independent: updating one does not necessarily update the other.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Software layer | Where the update is installed | How you start it | What it controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonos app | Your iPhone, iPad or Android device | Apple App Store or Google Play | The controller interface, account functions and app features |
| Sonos system software | Your connected Sonos speakers and other system products | Sonos app under General Settings > System Updates | Speaker firmware, system behavior and compatibility |
| Sonos Ace software | The Ace headphones | Sonos’s separate Ace update process | Ace-specific firmware |
| S1 Controller system | Products managed by the S1 Controller | The separate S1 upgrade and update instructions | Legacy S1 systems and their compatible products |
The app’s version and the system’s version can therefore be different without anything being wrong. A phone may receive a new controller build while the speakers remain on their current system software, or the system may update automatically after the app was installed earlier.
#1 Best Overall
- The new acoustic architecture replaces Move's single tweeter with two, unlocking a higher-fidelity stereo soundstage with crisp vocals and detailed instruments. With deep, dynamic bass powered by the precision-tuned woofer, you'll feel the emotional charge of a live performance.
- With automatic Trueplay tuning, Move 2 continually optimizes the sound for its surroundings. So, no matter where you are or what you play, you get the best listening experience.
- Listen twice as long as with the previous generation. All the acoustic updates work in concert for increased efficiency, giving you up to 24 hours of playback on a single charge.
- Shock absorbent materials protect against accidental drops, and the IP56 rating ensures spills, splashes, rain, dirt, and dust don't dampen your listening experience.
- Use the built-in handle to bring your music from one place to the next. When the battery needs a boost, set Move 2 on the included Wireless Charging Base, upgraded with a detachable power cable and more compact adapter. Charge on the go with any USB-PD power supply.
For platform prerequisites, consult Sonos’s Sonos app requirements. Network and product requirements are listed in the Sonos system requirements.
Before you begin
A few checks make an update less likely to fail or appear unavailable:
- Use the phone or tablet that normally controls your Sonos system.
- Connect that device to the same home network as the speakers. Sonos requires the app and products to be on the same subnet.
- Do not use a guest Wi-Fi network or a network that requires a browser-based portal login; Sonos lists those arrangements among unsupported network setups.
- Keep the speakers powered and connected while the system update runs.
- If you use an older S1 Controller setup or Sonos Ace, identify that branch before following the standard instructions.
- Check that your phone or tablet meets the current operating-system and hardware requirements on Sonos’s support page.
- Use a stable internet connection for the app-store download and for any system check that contacts Sonos.
- Note which app you have installed. The current Sonos app and S1 Controller are separate products, and their menus and supported systems are not interchangeable.
“Same subnet” generally means that the phone and products are on the same local network segment, not merely that both can reach the internet. A guest network can provide web access while still preventing the app from discovering speakers. If your router creates separate main, guest or isolated networks, select the main network used by the Sonos system.

Install an offered update
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your account picture at the top of the screen to open available updates.
- Find Sonos in the list and tap Update. If you do not see it, search the App Store for “Sonos,” open the official app listing and look for an Update button.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then open Sonos and sign in if the app asks.
Do not use the system-update menu inside Sonos to update the iPhone or iPad application. The mobile app is delivered by Apple’s store, while the speaker software is delivered through the Sonos controller.
The app-store release may be staged. Sonos says a release can roll out over days or weeks, so two compatible iPhones in different regions may not receive the same app version at the same time. An absent Update button does not by itself indicate a fault.
If the App Store still shows an old version
- Check the app’s store listing again later; staged availability can change without any action on your part.
- Confirm that the device satisfies the current Sonos app requirements.
- Make sure the App Store is using the intended country or region account. Release timing can differ by market.
- Check that the device has enough free storage for an app installation and that iOS or iPadOS is supported.
- Do not uninstall the app merely to force an update unless you understand the sign-in and local-settings consequences.
Sonos’s app release notes are useful when you need to distinguish a delayed rollout from a local installation problem. Compare the platform, country and release date shown there with the listing on your device; a dated announcement is not a promise that every account receives the build immediately.
Update the Sonos app on Android
Install an offered update
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, and open the available-updates list.
- Find Sonos and tap Update. You can also search Google Play for “Sonos,” open its official listing and select Update there.
- After installation, launch Sonos and allow any requested permissions that are needed to discover your system.
Google Play can also deliver updates gradually. Sonos’s release notes explain that app releases are rolled out over days or weeks, so an update may not appear immediately even when the release has been announced.
When Android will not install the update
- Check available storage and the device’s Android version.
- Retry on a stable internet connection and reopen the Sonos listing.
- Confirm that Google Play is signed in to the account and country you intend to use.
- Use the requirements page to confirm that the device is supported rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
- If discovery fails after installation, review the app’s requested local-network or nearby-device permissions and grant the permissions Sonos needs.
Installing a newer app does not migrate an S1 system to the current Sonos platform. If the phone opens S1 Controller, use the S1-specific guidance instead of assuming that a normal Play Store update changes the system branch.
Update Sonos speakers and the system
Automatic updates
Sonos states: “By default, your Sonos system is set to update automatically.” Automatic updating means the system can receive speaker software without you starting a manual check. The app and system still have separate version numbers, so an updated app does not prove that every speaker has installed the latest system software.

- The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.
- Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.
- Go from unboxing to incredible sound in minutes with a quick plug-in and the Sonos app
- Trueplay fine-tunes Era 100 SL for the unique acoustics of the room.
Automatic behavior also explains why you may open the app and find that a system update has already occurred. You do not need to wait for an app-store release before checking the speakers, and you do not need to start a manual check every time if the system reports that it is current.
Run a manual system check
- Open the current Sonos app on your mobile device.
- Open Settings.
- Choose General Settings.
- Tap System Updates.
- Tap Check for Updates.
- If an update is offered, read the in-app message and choose the confirmation option shown by Sonos.
- Leave the speakers powered and the mobile device connected to the same network while the process completes. Follow every in-app prompt rather than closing the app or changing networks.
The official procedure is documented in Sonos’s speaker-update instructions. That page does not establish a universal completion time, so do not treat a particular number of minutes as a guarantee. The length can depend on the products, connection and update being delivered.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Keep all products that belong to the system available during the check. Unplugging a speaker, moving the phone to another Wi-Fi network or interrupting the prompt can leave you unsure which products received the software. If the app asks for another action, follow that message rather than substituting a generic restart procedure.
If no system update is offered
A manual check can legitimately report that the system is current even when the mobile app has a different version number. App releases and system releases are published separately, and availability can vary by region. Record the message shown in the app, then compare it with the appropriate release notes instead of assuming that the two numbers must match.
Release notes are best used as a dated reference, not as a promise that every system receives a build simultaneously. A note may describe a release that is still being rolled out, or a regional page may show a different entry from a U.S. page. If the in-app check says the system is current and playback works, a mismatched number alone is not evidence of a failed update.
Sonos Ace uses a different update process
Sonos Ace is an exception to the normal speaker-system route. Do not try to update Ace by treating it as another room in a standard Sonos speaker system. Use Sonos’s dedicated Ace instructions and the update controls presented for the headphones. The general speaker path above is for products managed as a Sonos system.
If you own both Ace and Sonos speakers, updating one does not automatically update the other. Confirm which product the app is addressing before accepting an update, and keep Ace on the process Sonos documents for that device.
S1 Controller users need separate instructions
The S1 Controller belongs to an older Sonos software branch. If your goal is to move from S1 to the latest Sonos app and system, follow Sonos’s separate S1 upgrade instructions rather than attempting to force the current-app procedure onto an S1 setup. Product compatibility and migration steps depend on the equipment in that system; the normal General Settings > System Updates route is not a substitute for the S1 guidance.
Before changing branches, identify every product in the S1 system and read the compatibility and migration directions. A current-app installation on the phone does not by itself convert an S1-managed system, and an S1 Controller menu should not be used as proof that the current app is installed.

Understand app and system release numbers
Release numbers are useful for confirming what changed, but they are volatile and can differ by platform, country and date. Sonos publishes separate pages for Sonos app release notes and Sonos system release notes.
| Component | Dated example in Sonos release information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Android Sonos app | 27.1 (90.00.43), listed with an October 6, 2026 release date in the U.S. app notes | A platform- and region-specific listing, not a permanent global version |
| iOS Sonos app | 27.1 (90.00.47), listed with an October 6, 2026 release date in the U.S. app notes | The iOS build can have a different build number from Android even when the marketing version is the same |
| Sonos system, U.S. result | 97.1-80312, dated September 8, 2026 | A dated system-release entry that may be superseded |
| Sonos system, North American result | 27.1 / 97.2-81220, dated October 6, 2026 | Evidence that regional release information can show a different system version |
These examples illustrate why a single “latest Sonos version” number is unreliable as evergreen advice. Use the release notes for your market or the result of the in-app check on the day you update. Sonos’s app notes also state that releases can be rolled out over days or weeks.
When reporting a version to support, include whether it is the Android app, iOS app or Sonos system, along with the date and region. The build number in an app store can differ from the system number shown in Sonos notes; comparing unlike numbers creates a false mismatch.
When the app cannot find your speakers
Discovery is a network-visibility issue before it is an update issue. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that the phone or tablet running Sonos is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the speakers.
- Check that both are on the same subnet. A phone on one isolated network and speakers on another may have internet access but still be invisible to the app.
- Leave any guest network and reconnect to the primary home network.
- Do not use a Wi-Fi network that pauses access behind a hotel-, café- or apartment-style portal login; Sonos lists portal-login networks as unsupported.
- Review the detailed topology and device requirements in the Sonos system requirements.
- Reopen the Sonos app after correcting the connection, then retry Settings > General Settings > System Updates > Check for Updates.
If the speakers still do not appear, capture the exact message shown by the app and compare your setup with Sonos’s network requirements before changing router settings. Randomly moving speakers between networks can create a second, separate system and make recovery harder.
Having internet access is not enough for discovery. The app must be able to communicate locally with the products, which is why subnet isolation, guest Wi-Fi and portal-login networks matter. Correct the network path first; repeatedly tapping Check for Updates cannot discover a system that the app cannot see.
Common update problems and the safest response
The app update is not listed
This is commonly explained by staged store distribution. Check the listing again later, verify platform requirements and consult the app release notes. Do not assume that deleting the app will make a staged release arrive sooner.
The app updated, but the speakers did not
That is expected when only the mobile application was installed. Open the updated app and perform the separate system check. Automatic system updating may also install the speaker software without an immediate app-store change.
The system update stops or asks you to retry
- Keep every speaker powered and leave the controlling device on the same subnet.
- Follow the prompt in the app and retry when the connection is stable.
- Check for unsupported guest or portal-login networking.
- Use the release-note page to see whether the update is available in your region before repeatedly attempting the same action.
Because Sonos does not publish one guaranteed duration for every system update, avoid switching networks or unplugging products simply because the process takes longer than expected. If the app supplies a specific recovery instruction, use that instruction and record any error text for later support.

The update route is missing
Make sure you are in the current Sonos app rather than the S1 Controller, and confirm that the product is not Sonos Ace. Those branches have their own procedures. If the app cannot identify the system, resolve network visibility first.
The app opens but asks you to sign in again
Sign in only when the official app requests it, and make sure you are using the account associated with your Sonos system. Do not remove the app just because a staged update is unavailable; uninstalling can add account and setup work without changing release availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the result
- Open the Sonos app after the update prompt finishes.
- Confirm that your rooms and products are visible.
- Start playback in one room, then check any grouped rooms you rely on.
- Return to Settings > General Settings > System Updates and run a check if you need confirmation that no further system update is offered.
- For a documented change, read the matching app or system release notes and compare the platform, region and date with your installation.
- Record the app build and system version separately if you need to report a problem.
If playback and discovery work but the app and system numbers differ, that alone is not a failure. They are separate software layers with separate release schedules.
