Use only the refrigerator maker’s official app or the update screen built into the appliance. First record the exact model and region, confirm stable Wi-Fi and power, check the installed software version, and back up photos or other personal data when the manufacturer recommends it. Start the update from the official prompt, leave the refrigerator connected until it confirms completion, and verify cooling and alerts afterward. There is no universal smart-refrigerator firmware file or procedure.
What a refrigerator firmware update changes
Firmware is the software that controls a refrigerator’s connected features and, depending on the model, parts of its user interface, sensors, notifications, cameras, voice functions, and network connection. An update can add a feature, correct a fault, improve compatibility, or deliver a security fix. It may not change the refrigerator’s physical cooling capacity.

Update eligibility, menu labels, rollout timing, and support periods vary by model, country, and hardware revision. Treat instructions for another model as examples, not as permission to install its file. A file intended for a different appliance can leave the refrigerator unusable.
Before you start: identify the exact appliance
Record model, serial number, and region
Find the model and serial number on the refrigerator label, inside the door area, or in the owner documentation. Save a photo of the label. The same product family can have different firmware in different countries, and some models have no user-installable update at all.

Use the manufacturer’s supported delivery method
| Manufacturer or platform | Normal update route | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| GE connected refrigerators | SmartHQ app notification, then Apply | Critical updates may be pushed automatically; performance updates appear as Update Available. Non-Wi-Fi models generally do not use this process. |
| LG ThinQ-connected refrigerators | ThinQ app: Menu → UP Appliance Center → choose upgrade → Upgrade | Upgrade timing and available functions differ by product and model. |
| Samsung Family Hub | On-device software screen and over-the-network prompt; check Settings → About Family Hub → Software version | Storage may need to be freed before installation. USB instructions in Samsung support describe photo backup, not a universal installation method. |
Do not substitute a generic firmware download, a file for a similar-looking model, or a USB procedure copied from a forum. If the official manual does not describe USB installation for your exact model, assume USB is not an installer.
Prepare power, network, and storage
Keep power stable
Install when the refrigerator can remain connected to mains power. Do not unplug it, switch off a power strip, or deliberately trip a circuit while downloading or installing. Avoid starting immediately before a planned move, a long power outage, or work on the electrical circuit.
Confirm the intended Wi-Fi connection
Check that the refrigerator is connected to the home network you intend to use and that the phone running the manufacturer’s app has internet access. Put the appliance within reliable wireless range or improve coverage before beginning. A weak signal can interrupt a download or delay the completion confirmation.

Check available storage and protect personal data
Some connected refrigerators need free internal storage to stage an update. Samsung Family Hub support specifically advises freeing space if storage is insufficient. Remove unneeded media only after deciding what must be preserved.
Back up gallery photos and other user data when the manufacturer’s instructions provide that option. Samsung documents connecting USB memory to back up Family Hub gallery photos. A full device reset deletes personal data, so do not use reset as the first attempt to solve an update problem.
Eight-step safe update procedure
- Identify the model and region. Match the full model number and market to the official support page, app entry, and owner manual.
- Check the current version. Open the refrigerator’s software-information screen or the manufacturer app and record the version. On Family Hub, use Settings → About Family Hub → Software version.
- Back up data if advised. Preserve Family Hub gallery photos or other personal content before any operation that could erase data. Do not assume a normal update deletes content, but protect it before troubleshooting or reset.
- Stabilize connectivity. Confirm Wi-Fi status on the appliance, internet access on the phone, and adequate signal strength where the refrigerator stands.
- Open the official update prompt. Accept the notification in SmartHQ, ThinQ, Family Hub, or the exact on-device menu documented for your model. Never browse to an unofficial firmware file.
- Start the update once. Select Apply, Upgrade, or the equivalent command, then allow the download and installation to proceed. Do not repeatedly tap the control if the screen appears unchanged.
- Wait without interruption. Keep power and network available. Do not unplug, factory-reset, open service panels, or force a reboot while the appliance reports downloading, installing, or restarting.
- Verify operation. Reopen the version screen or app status, confirm Wi-Fi reconnection, and test cooling, temperature alarms, notifications, and any feature that matters to you.
The official sources reviewed do not publish a universal completion time or firmware-size figure. A progress indicator, restart, or temporarily unavailable display can be normal; use the manufacturer’s status message rather than an invented time limit to decide that an update has failed.
Brand-specific instructions
GE Appliances: SmartHQ
Connected GE refrigerators receive software updates through the SmartHQ app. GE says the app displays an update notification; you can update immediately or later, choose Apply, and wait while the download completes.

GE distinguishes between update types. “Critical updates will automatically be pushed to your appliance when it is connected,” according to GE Appliances. Performance updates appear as an Update Available notification. If Wi-Fi is interrupted, GE says the appliance should reconnect when service returns and that features already downloaded remain available.
GE also says refrigerators generally do not require updates. Owners of non-Wi-Fi models should register the appliance and follow direct manufacturer communications when an update is needed rather than trying to add a connected-model file.
If SmartHQ does not offer an update, verify the model entry, network connection, and current version before contacting support. GE lists a Connected Home Support Line at 1-800-220-6899; hours can change, so confirm the current schedule through GE’s support channels.
LG: ThinQ and UP Appliance Center
LG’s documented ThinQ path is Menu → UP Appliance Center. Select the available upgrade and choose Upgrade. ThinQ notifies users when an upgrade is ready, but LG states that timing and functions differ by product and model.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the refrigerator and phone online during the process. If the upgrade is not listed, confirm that the appliance is registered to the correct ThinQ account, that the model is eligible in your country, and that the current version is not already installed. Do not import a firmware package from another LG model or region.
Samsung Family Hub
On Family Hub, check Settings → About Family Hub → Software version. When the refrigerator is connected to Wi-Fi and an update has reached your model, Samsung describes an over-the-network prompt. Follow the on-screen instructions and leave the appliance powered until it confirms completion.
Insufficient internal storage can block an update. Free space using the Family Hub controls, preserving anything important first. Samsung’s USB guidance supports backing up gallery photos on supported models; it does not establish that every Family Hub refrigerator accepts firmware installation from a USB drive.
Samsung’s 2025 software-support announcement says: “Wi-Fi-enabled Samsung home appliances will be eligible for software updates for up to seven years after launching, starting from models launched in 2024.” The statement is qualified: hardware limitations can restrict updates, and service availability varies. “Up to seven years” is therefore not a promise that every feature or every model will receive seven years of updates.

This comparison does not make one brand’s menu or file compatible with another. It only shows why the model number and the manufacturer’s own instructions matter.
Can you update a smart refrigerator with a USB drive?
Only when the exact refrigerator manual or manufacturer support instruction says to do so. The normal route for connected models is an app or an over-the-network appliance prompt.
- A USB flash drive may be useful for Samsung Family Hub photo backup.
- A model-directed recovery procedure may require USB, but the model documentation must specify the file, formatting, and steps.
- A random USB drive containing a firmware file is not a safe universal installer.
- Do not infer USB installation support from the presence of a USB port or from instructions for another model.
If a support technician directs a USB recovery, confirm the exact model, region, file name, drive format, and recovery sequence before proceeding. Keep the original data backed up because recovery or reset can erase personal content. A USB drive is the only clearly supported physical accessory discussed for these workflows, and it is primarily a backup aid unless the manufacturer explicitly directs recovery.

What to do if the update is stuck or fails
First distinguish a slow-looking installation from a genuine failure. If the display or app shows active download, installation, or restart status, do not interrupt it simply because there is no visible movement. The official sources do not establish a universal timeout.
| Symptom | Safe next action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| No update appears | Confirm exact model and region, Wi-Fi status, current version, app registration, and rollout eligibility. | Installing a file from a third-party site. |
| Download will not begin | Check internet access, appliance signal, app login, and available storage; retry from the official prompt after correcting the cause. | Repeatedly pressing update or changing several settings at once. |
| Wi-Fi drops during download | Restore the intended network and follow the manufacturer’s status message. GE says the appliance should reconnect when available. | Unplugging the appliance during installation. |
| Family Hub reports insufficient storage | Free space after backing up photos and other needed content. | Deleting gallery content without a backup. |
| Update completes but features misbehave | Verify the version, reconnect Wi-Fi if needed, and test cooling, alarms, and notifications; then contact manufacturer support. | Immediate factory reset or installing an older file. |
| Appliance will not recover or cooling is abnormal | Stop experimenting and contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician. | Opening sealed service areas or attempting an unapproved rollback. |
Do not use a factory reset as a first troubleshooting step. It can remove personal data and may not repair an interrupted installation. Preserve photos and settings, document any error text, and provide the model, serial number, software version, network symptoms, and time of the failure to support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will an update delete photos or settings?
A normal update should be treated separately from a reset: the documented guidance does not say that every routine update deletes personal content, but you should still back up anything important when the manufacturer provides that option. Samsung specifically documents USB backup for Family Hub gallery photos and warns that a full reset deletes personal data. Therefore, do not reset merely because an update is delayed or a screen appears unchanged.
Verify the refrigerator after updating
Confirm software and connectivity
Open the same software-version screen used before the update and record the new version. Check that the app shows the refrigerator online and that it reconnects after any automatic restart.
Check food-safety functions first
- Confirm the refrigerator and freezer are cooling normally.
- Check displayed temperatures against your normal readings.
- Trigger or observe temperature and door alerts if your model supports them.
- Verify that notifications reach the intended phone account.
- Check cameras, gallery access, voice controls, or other connected features only after cooling and alarms are normal.
If temperature control, alarms, or connectivity remain abnormal, stop repeated update attempts and seek manufacturer or qualified appliance service. Firmware troubleshooting should not compromise food safety.
Update support is limited by model and age
Connected appliances do not receive updates indefinitely. Eligibility depends on model, launch date, region, hardware capability, and the manufacturer’s service policy. Samsung’s published policy covers eligible Wi-Fi-enabled home appliances launched from 2024 for up to seven years, subject to hardware and service-availability qualifications. It does not automatically apply to older models or guarantee every feature.
GE’s guidance that refrigerators generally do not require updates means an absent notification is not, by itself, evidence of a fault. For a non-Wi-Fi appliance, register the product and follow direct manufacturer communications if an update is ever required.
When to contact support
Use the manufacturer’s official support channel when the model is eligible but no update appears after connectivity, storage, and version checks; when an error repeats; when the appliance cannot reconnect; or when cooling and alarms behave abnormally after installation. Provide the model and serial number, country, current and attempted software versions, exact on-screen message, Wi-Fi status, and whether personal data was backed up.
For safety, contact a qualified appliance technician if the refrigerator cannot maintain temperature, produces unusual electrical symptoms, or requires work beyond the documented user menus. A software update should never require bypassing electrical or sealed refrigeration components.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I update smart refrigerator firmware?
Identify the exact model and region, check the current version, connect the appliance to reliable Wi-Fi, and use only the manufacturer’s app or on-device update prompt. Leave power and network connected until completion, then verify cooling, alarms, and connectivity.
Can I update a Samsung Family Hub refrigerator with a USB drive?
Not by default. Samsung documents USB memory for backing up gallery photos on supported models. Use USB for firmware only when the exact manual or a manufacturer support technician specifies the file, drive format, and recovery steps.
Will a routine firmware update delete my photos or settings?
Do not assume a normal update deletes them, but back up important content when the manufacturer offers that option. A full factory reset does delete personal data, so it should not be your first troubleshooting step.
What should I do if the refrigerator update is stuck?
If the appliance shows downloading, installing, or restarting, do not unplug or reset it. There is no universal completion time. Check the official status message, then verify model eligibility, Wi-Fi, storage, and current version before contacting support.

The model may not be eligible, the rollout may not have reached your region, the current version may already be installed, or the refrigerator may not be connected. Confirm the full model and region in the official app or support page.
Do non-Wi-Fi GE refrigerators need firmware updates?
GE says refrigerators generally do not require updates. Owners of non-Wi-Fi models should register the appliance and follow direct GE communications if an update is needed rather than using a connected-model file.
How long will a Samsung refrigerator receive software updates?
Samsung announced up to seven years for eligible Wi-Fi-enabled home appliances launched from 2024. Hardware limitations and service availability can restrict that support, and the policy does not guarantee every feature or older model.
What information should I give appliance support?
Provide the model and serial number, purchase country, current and attempted software versions, exact error text, Wi-Fi status, storage symptoms, and whether photos or other personal data were backed up.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
Safest practice is simple: match the exact model and region, use only the official GE SmartHQ, LG ThinQ, Samsung Family Hub, or documented appliance menu, stabilize power and Wi-Fi, back up personal data, and never improvise with firmware files or USB drives. After installation, verify the software version, network, cooling, alarms, and notifications. If cooling or safety functions are abnormal, stop experimenting and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician.
