The safest way to update Microsoft 365 or Office is to use the update control built into the app or the app store from which it was installed. On Windows, that is File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. On a Mac, use Microsoft AutoUpdate or the Mac App Store, depending on the installation source. On iPhone and iPad, use the App Store. Save your work first, and do not try to bypass update controls on a work or school device.
Update timing depends on your platform, license, release channel, operating-system support and organization policy. An update check can install the latest build available to your device, but it does not guarantee that every newly announced feature appears immediately.

Before you start: identify the installation and who controls it
Microsoft 365 and perpetual Office apps can be updated through different mechanisms. The correct path is determined by four things:

- Platform: Windows, macOS, iPhone or iPad.
- Installation source: Office’s own updater, the Mac App Store or the iOS/iPadOS App Store.
- Control: a personally managed computer versus a work- or school-managed device.
- Support status: whether the operating system and update channel still receive updates.
Open an Office app and check its account or help screen before changing anything. If update controls are absent, that is often a policy or licensing clue rather than a fault.

Save work and prepare a safe update window
- Save documents to their normal location and wait for cloud files to finish syncing.
- Close large or unsaved files when the updater asks you to restart an app.
- Keep the computer connected to power and use a reliable internet connection.
- Do not uninstall Office merely because an update is not immediately offered.
- On a managed device, record the exact message and contact IT instead of attempting to override policy.
Update Microsoft 365 or Office on Windows
Microsoft’s standard Windows route uses an Office app’s account page. Word is a convenient example, but the same controls are available in other Microsoft 365 apps.
- Open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or another installed Office app. Create a blank document if the app asks you to choose a start screen.
- Select File > Account. In Classic Outlook, the page may be labelled Office Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- If the menu offers Enable Updates instead, choose that first, then return to Update Options > Update Now.
- Allow Office to check for and install the available build. Do not close the updater while it is applying files.
- When installation finishes, dismiss the completion window and reopen the app if requested.
The update command installs what is available for your license and channel; it is not a promise that every feature Microsoft has announced is already in your build. Feature releases can be staged, and administrators can defer or limit them.
If “Update Options” is missing
If Product Information shows only About and no Update Options, Microsoft says the installation may use a volume license or be managed by Group Policy. In that situation, the person using the PC may not have authority to start an update.
- For a company or school computer, ask the help desk which deployment schedule and channel apply.
- For a personally owned computer, check whether updates are delivered through Microsoft Update or another installation-management method configured by the license.
- If Office will not open at all, Microsoft lists repairing Office as a possible route before trying another update method.
Do not download a third-party “Office updater” to replace a missing control. The documented safe routes are Office’s own controls, Microsoft’s managed deployment tools or the operating system’s Microsoft update service.
Update Microsoft 365 or Office on a Mac
Mac instructions differ according to where the apps came from. Microsoft AutoUpdate controls installations downloaded from Microsoft; apps installed through Apple’s Mac App Store use the store’s update system.

Apps using Microsoft AutoUpdate
- Open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or OneNote.
- From the menu bar, choose Help > Check for Updates.
- Microsoft AutoUpdate opens. Select Update for the selected app or Update All for every eligible Microsoft app.
- Let the installation complete, then restart the Office app.
If AutoUpdate reports that no update is available, that means no newer build is currently offered to that installation and channel. It does not prove that every other Mac user has the same build; release schedules and eligibility can differ.
Apps installed from the Mac App Store
- Open the Mac App Store.
- Select Updates in the sidebar.
- Find the Microsoft apps and select Update, or use the store’s update-all control.
- Open the apps after the store finishes and sign in if prompted.
Automatic updates can handle future releases when they are enabled in the App Store settings. Do not run both update paths for the same installation; first establish whether the app is a Microsoft download or a store download.
macOS support requirements that affect updates
Microsoft’s Mac support guidance says Microsoft 365, Office 2024 and Office 2021 support the three most recent major macOS versions. In Microsoft’s September 2026 snapshot, those versions are macOS Golden Gate 27, macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS Sequoia 15.
Microsoft also states that beginning with the September 2025 update, version 16.101, macOS Sonoma or later is required to receive updates to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. These requirements are version-sensitive. Check Microsoft’s current Mac support information before treating the September 2026 list as permanent.
An unsupported macOS version can continue to run an installed app for a time while receiving no new app updates, including security fixes. If AutoUpdate repeatedly offers nothing on an old Mac, verify the operating-system requirement before reinstalling Office.

Update Microsoft 365 on iPhone and iPad
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Scroll to the available updates list.
- Tap Update beside Microsoft 365, or tap Update All.
- Open Microsoft 365 after the installation and sign in if the app requests it.
Automatic App Store updates can install later releases without a manual check when enabled. iPhone and iPad app updates are separate from Windows or Mac Office updates, so a mobile app can be on a different version and release schedule.

Safe updating is less about finding a special utility and more about using the mechanism that owns the installation. The normal documented procedures use Office’s built-in controls or the store from which the app was installed. They do not require a separate physical product, replacement media or a third-party updater.
Use the right authority
On a personal device, you can normally start an update yourself. On a work or school device, the administrator may control the channel, defer releases, or deploy updates centrally. A missing button, an enforced restart time or a message that settings are managed can all be intentional. Repeatedly trying to override those controls can leave the installation unsupported or out of compliance.
Expect staged feature delivery
Microsoft distributes some features gradually. Two fully updated computers can therefore show different capabilities for a period of time. Windows and Mac also have different release schedules, and an organization’s selected channel can lag behind the broad consumer rollout. Treat the successful installation of the offered build as the result; do not assume that an absent feature means the update failed.
Troubleshoot a Windows update that will not install
“Update Now” is unavailable
- Check whether the page shows only About. That commonly indicates a volume-license installation or Group Policy management.
- Ask your organization’s administrator how updates are deployed.
- On a personal PC, determine whether Microsoft Update is responsible for the installation.
The check finds no update
- Confirm that the app is signed in to the expected Microsoft account or organizational account.
- Check the installed product and channel on File > Account.
- Restart the app and repeat the check later if a staged rollout is in progress.
- Verify that Windows is supported and that the device has enough free storage for the download and installation.
The installation fails or Office will not open
Record the error text, close other Office apps and restart Windows. If Office still cannot open, Microsoft lists repairing Office as a possible route. On a managed computer, give the error and the time of failure to IT so the administrator can use the organization’s approved repair or deployment process.

KB5002907: why it is not a general Office-update step
KB5002907 is a narrow, optional Windows Update offer for certain Microsoft 365 Apps installations that are more than 90 days out of date and use Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel. Microsoft describes it as an optional update, not a general replacement for the Office Update Now command.
The offer does not apply to every Office installation. It does not make changes when updates are controlled through Group Policy or Cloud Update. Microsoft’s page also reports that rollout was paused after unexpected results on some Office 2016 or Office 2019 devices.
If Windows presents KB5002907, read the applicable Microsoft notice and your organization’s instructions before accepting it. Do not search for it as a routine fix, and do not infer that its presence means every Office user is at risk.

Microsoft issued a work-or-school notice for affected macOS and iOS users that required an update by July 13, 2026. The notice described a renewed license-validation certificate issue. Microsoft said affected apps could enter reduced-functionality mode: files could be opened and viewed, but editing, saving or full feature use could be blocked. It also stated, “Your files are safe — this is not a security issue.”

If a managed Mac or iPhone still shows a related certificate or licensing message, contact the organization’s help desk and verify Microsoft’s current guidance rather than relying on the old deadline.

How to choose the correct update path

After the update: verify without disrupting work
- Open the app and confirm that your normal documents open.
- Check File > Account on Windows, or the app’s Help/About information on Mac, to note the installed version.
- Test a noncritical action such as creating, saving and reopening a small document.
- Confirm that add-ins, templates, fonts and connected services still load if your work depends on them.
- If a feature is missing, check whether it is still rolling out or restricted by your organization before attempting another installation.
Keep the version number and any error message when reporting a problem. Those details allow an administrator or support technician to distinguish an update failure from a channel, licensing or operating-system limitation.

- Windows work or school device: if the control is missing or blocked, contact IT.
- Mac Microsoft download: use Help > Check for Updates and Microsoft AutoUpdate.

Why do two computers show different Microsoft 365 features after updating?
