Before updating: do you still need iTunes?
Apple has split its Windows software into separate apps. Apple’s current overview is available at Apple’s Windows download guidance.
| Task | Recommended app |
|---|---|
| Music library and iTunes Store music | Apple Music |
| Movies and television shows | Apple TV |
| iPhone, iPad or iPod touch backup, restore, update, management and syncing | Apple Devices |
| Podcasts and audiobooks on a PC | iTunes |
| Older PC that does not meet the newer apps’ requirements | Compatible iTunes installation, if available |
On Windows 10 or later, Apple says to use Apple Devices for iPhone and iPad file sharing rather than iTunes: Apple’s file-sharing instructions.

Identify your iTunes installation
Open iTunes, then search Windows for Apple Software Update. The updater you find determines the normal update path:
- Microsoft Store installation: update through Microsoft Store.
- Older Apple installer or Boot Camp installation: Apple Software Update may be installed and can offer iTunes updates.
- Neither is available: start from Apple’s official Windows download page and follow its Microsoft Store link. Do not use third-party download mirrors.
The installation source is not always clearly displayed inside iTunes; the available Windows updater is the practical test.
Update iTunes through Microsoft Store (Windows 11 and Windows 10)
Apple identifies Microsoft Store as the update channel for Store-installed Apple apps, including iTunes. Store labels change between Windows releases, so you may see Get updates, Check for updates or an update icon.

- Select Library.
- Select Get updates (or the equivalent update control).
- Wait while the Store checks installed apps.
- Select Update beside iTunes if one is offered.
- Reopen iTunes and confirm that your library loads.
Microsoft Store can update apps automatically, subject to Store and Windows settings. An update may close iTunes or require a restart. A normal update should leave the library in place, but do not delete iTunes folders or change the media-library location while troubleshooting.

Update older iTunes installations with Apple Software Update
Apple Software Update may accompany older Apple Windows software and Boot Camp. Apple says it checks weekly by default and whenever you open it; not every iTunes installation includes the utility.

- Select the Windows taskbar search box.
- Search for Apple Software Update and open it.
- Allow it to check for updates.
- Select the iTunes update, if listed, then select Install.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Open iTunes and test the library and any connected device.
On an ordinary Windows 10 or 11 PC using Apple’s newer apps, Microsoft Store is the preferred route. Boot Camp installations are an important exception where Apple Software Update may still matter. See Apple’s update instructions.
What Windows 8 users should do
Do not treat Windows 8 like a current Windows 10 or 11 installation. Apple’s modern app guidance targets Windows 10 or later, while older iTunes documentation is not proof that every 2026 iTunes build supports Windows 8.
- Check whether Microsoft Store currently offers an iTunes version compatible with your system.
- If iTunes is already installed, search for Apple Software Update and use it if present.
- Back up your iTunes library and device backups before reinstalling or changing versions.
- Do not uninstall working iTunes until you have confirmed that a compatible replacement installer exists.
- If no update appears, check Apple’s official iTunes compatibility information before making changes.
- If the required Apple Music, Apple TV or Apple Devices app requires Windows 10 or later, upgrading Windows may be necessary.
Apple’s iTunes 12 technical specifications list Windows 7 or later and require a 64-bit installer on 64-bit Windows: technical specifications. That older page does not establish support for every current release. Apple’s iTunes 12.12.3 security page lists a March 8, 2022 release for Windows 10 and later: security information. An older Windows 8-era requirements page is available at Apple Support.

Check the installed iTunes version
- Open iTunes.
- Select Help.
- Select About iTunes.
- Note the version number shown, then close the About window.
Older builds may use slightly different menu wording. The iTunes version is separate from your Windows version and from the iPhone or iPad software version.
If no iTunes update appears
- It may already be current: confirm the installed version first.
- You may be using the wrong channel: Store-installed iTunes will not normally be updated through Apple Software Update, and a legacy installation may not appear in Store updates.
- Microsoft Store may be malfunctioning: restart Windows, sign in to the intended Microsoft account and run the library check again.
- Apple Software Update may be absent: this can indicate a Store-managed installation, removed Apple installer components or a non-Boot Camp PC. Do not download the utility from an unofficial site.
- Windows 8 may be outside the supported range: verify compatibility before removing the existing installation.
- Regional availability may differ: Apple notes that Store availability and features vary by country or region. Begin with Apple’s official download page rather than an unofficial repository.
If an update breaks device recognition
- Restart the computer.
- Disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, iPad or iPod.
- Try another USB cable or port.
- Confirm that the relevant Apple device-management app is installed.
- On Windows 10 or later, try Apple Devices instead of assuming iTunes remains the correct tool.
- Do not delete the iTunes library or mobile-device backup folders as a first step.
Apple’s current Windows device-management guidance is at Apple Devices support.
Updating iTunes is not the same as updating an iPhone or iPad
Updating iTunes changes the Windows application. To update iPhone, iPad or iPod touch software on a current Windows setup, use Apple Devices:

Should you replace iTunes?
| Choice | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Update existing iTunes | Keep a familiar workflow or legacy compatibility | It is no longer Apple’s primary Windows app for music and device management |
| Apple Music | Current music-library management | Does not reproduce every historical iTunes function |
| Apple TV | Movies and television shows | Separate from music and device management |
| Apple Devices | Current iPhone, iPad and iPod touch backup, restore, syncing and software updates | Separate apps handle music and video |
| Legacy iTunes on Windows 8 | Older hardware or a PC that cannot run newer Apple apps | Compatibility and update availability are uncertain |
For current Windows 10 and 11 systems, choose the app that matches the task instead of updating iTunes solely to manage a modern iPhone or iPad.
