How to update iOS and remove apps you don’t recognize

The safe order is: back up your iPhone, install the update offered in Settings > General > Software Update, identify any unfamiliar app, then choose whether to keep it, remove only its Home Screen icon, lock or hide it, or delete it. Deleting an app removes its installation and local iPhone data, but it does not automatically cancel an in-app subscription and may not remove data already stored in iCloud.

How do I update iOS?

Use the version that Apple offers for your particular iPhone rather than relying on a universal “latest iOS” number. Availability depends on the model and Apple’s current release. Apple recommends keeping software current for security updates, new features and bug fixes. The labels and supported devices can change, so the Software Update screen on your phone is the authoritative check.

1. Back up before changing the system

Make a current backup with iCloud or a computer before you begin. A backup gives you a recovery point if an installation is interrupted or you need to restore information later. Confirm that the backup has completed before moving on. Updating and deleting are separate actions, but doing the backup first protects you from an unwanted loss during either process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Connect power and Wi‑Fi

Plug the iPhone into power and connect it to Wi‑Fi. Keeping the phone powered and online prevents a low battery or mobile-data interruption from stopping the download or installation. Leave it connected while the installation runs and the phone restarts.

3. Check the installed version and available update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Read the installed iOS version and the update status shown for your device.

This screen tells you both what is already installed and whether Apple has offered a compatible update. It is more reliable than a version number copied from an older article, because Apple’s release and compatibility information can change.

Apple’s step-by-step instructions are in its Update your iPhone or iPad guide and the iPhone User Guide entry for updating iOS.

4. Download and install what Apple offers

If an update is available, tap Download and Install, enter your passcode if requested, and follow the on-screen instructions. The iPhone may restart during installation. Do not disconnect power while the process is running. Wait for the normal lock screen or Home Screen to return before treating the update as complete, then revisit Software Update if you want to verify the installed version.

5. Turn on automatic updates if you want them

  1. Open Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Tap Automatic Updates.
  3. Choose the automatic download and installation options shown on your iPhone.

Apple describes automatic installation as an overnight process while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi‑Fi, with a notification before installation. Automatic download can fetch the update in the background so it is ready for a later install. Check the options displayed on your own phone because labels and choices can vary with the iOS version.

If no update appears

Do not assume that the phone is infected or that the update has failed. Apple says to use a computer when an update does not appear on the device. The workflow depends on the computer: newer macOS versions use Finder, while older macOS versions and Windows use iTunes. Follow Apple’s current computer instructions rather than using an unofficial installer. A computer update is a workaround for availability or installation problems; it does not change the separate steps for reviewing or removing apps.

What an iOS update does—and does not do

An iOS update changes the operating system. It does not automatically identify every unfamiliar app, cancel subscriptions, or erase app data in iCloud. After the update, continue with the app-review steps below instead of assuming that updating alone resolves an app you do not recognize.

How do I find an app I do not recognize?

An unfamiliar icon or name is a reason to investigate, not proof that the app is malware. It could be an app you installed earlier, an app placed outside the visible Home Screen pages, or an Apple component whose purpose is not obvious. First locate the complete app entry, then verify its identity before choosing a destructive action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search the App Library

  1. From the Home Screen, swipe left past all Home Screen pages until App Library appears.
  2. Use the search field to enter the app’s name, or browse the alphabetical list.
  3. Touch and hold the result to see the available management actions.

An app removed from the Home Screen can still be installed in App Library. That is why an icon disappearing from a page is not evidence that the app has been uninstalled. Apple explains the organization options in its App Library support article and the iPhone User Guide.

Check what the app is supposed to do

Open the App Store and search for the exact app name. Apple’s Personal Safety guidance states: “If you’re unsure what an app’s purpose is, you can look it up in the App Store.” Compare the developer, description and screenshots with what is installed, and consider whether another person who uses the phone added it. Do not open links or grant permissions merely to find out what an unknown app does.

An exact-name search is useful, but do not treat a familiar-looking name or icon as proof of authenticity. If the App Store listing does not match the installed app, pause and investigate rather than signing in or entering payment details. Keep the app installed while you verify it if deleting it immediately could remove information you may need to review.

Apple’s full review process is in Review and delete apps. That guidance was published in October 2025 and also cautions readers to consider safety and privacy effects before changing permissions or deleting information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review permissions with Safety Check

On iOS 16 or later, Safety Check can help you review and change the types of data an app can access, including location and photos. Use it when you are concerned that someone installed or configured an app without your permission. Review the sharing and access details before changing them, especially if another person may react to a sudden change. Safety Check is a review tool; seeing a permission does not by itself establish that an app is malicious.

Consider the personal-safety context before making a visible change. If another person may be monitoring the phone or relying on a shared app, changing access or deleting information can have consequences beyond the device. Apple advises considering those effects while reviewing apps and permissions.

Respond differently to an explicit malware warning

If iOS displays Apple’s warning that a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened, treat that as a specific security alert rather than ordinary uncertainty. Apple says to delete the app directly from the warning or delete it from the Home Screen or App Library. The instructions are in Apple’s malware-alert guidance. An app you simply do not recognize has not received that same warning; use identification and permission review instead of describing it as malware without evidence.

Which action should I choose?

Use the least disruptive option that matches your goal. The four outcomes below are different; hiding an icon is not the same as deleting the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Choice What happens on the iPhone App availability afterward Separate subscription or iCloud action
Remove from Home Screen The icon is removed from Home Screen pages, while the installed app remains on the iPhone. Open it from App Library or search. Any subscription and iCloud content remain; no deletion occurs.
Delete App The installed app and its local iPhone data are removed. It is no longer available until downloaded again. Cancel an unwanted in-app subscription separately. Data already in iCloud is not necessarily deleted.
Lock or hide an eligible downloaded app Access is restricted with Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode; hiding moves it to the authenticated Hidden folder in App Library. A locked app stays installed. A hidden app is available from the Hidden folder after authentication. Subscriptions and cloud-stored content are unaffected.
Keep and investigate No installation, data or access change is made while you verify the app. The app remains where it is installed. Review permissions and account billing separately.

The choice depends on the outcome you want. Remove from Home Screen changes visibility only. Locking or hiding limits access while preserving the installation. Deletion removes local software and data, but leaves billing and potentially cloud-stored files to handle separately. Keeping the app temporarily is reasonable when you need time to confirm its identity or consider another person’s safety.

Does Remove from Home Screen delete the app?

No. Remove from Home Screen only removes the icon from Home Screen pages. The app remains installed in App Library, retains its local data and can continue to send notifications or use permissions that are still enabled. Choose this option when you want a cleaner Home Screen but are not ready to uninstall the app.

Remove only the Home Screen icon

  1. Touch and hold the app icon.
  2. Tap Remove App.
  3. Tap Remove from Home Screen.

To find it later, swipe to App Library and search for the app. If the app remains installed, its account, subscription, notifications and permissions are not automatically changed by this choice.

How do I remove an app I do not recognize?

First identify the app as far as practical using App Library and an App Store lookup. If you decide it should not remain installed, use the delete command rather than the Home Screen-only command. If the iPhone has shown an explicit malware warning, follow Apple’s warning-specific deletion instruction instead of treating it as an ordinary unfamiliar app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Delete the app and its local data

  1. Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen or in App Library.
  2. Tap Remove App.
  3. Tap Delete App.
  4. Confirm by tapping Delete.

Apple says this removes the app and its data from the iPhone. It does not guarantee removal of data that the app has already saved in iCloud, such as photos or documents. If those cloud files matter, review and remove them through the app’s own account or the relevant iCloud location rather than assuming uninstalling will erase them. Deleting also does not prove that an account or service associated with the app has been closed.

Cancel an unwanted subscription separately

Deleting an app does not automatically cancel an in-app subscription. Before or after deletion, open the iPhone’s subscription management area and cancel any charge you do not want to renew. Keep the confirmation for your records. Removing the icon, locking the app or uninstalling it changes the app on the device; billing is a separate account action. If you are unsure whether a charge is linked to the app, review the subscription name before confirming cancellation.

Check whether deleting could affect another feature

Some built-in Apple apps cannot be deleted. Apple also allows removal of certain built-in apps, but doing so can affect related system functionality. Which built-in apps are removable can vary by region. If the app is part of iOS or another person relies on a related feature, verify its role before confirming deletion. The absence of a Delete App command can therefore be an expected design choice, not evidence that the phone is compromised.

Can I lock or hide an app instead of deleting it?

Yes, for eligible downloaded apps. Touch and hold the app and choose the lock or hide option offered by iOS, then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode. A hidden app moves to the authenticated Hidden folder in App Library. This limits casual access while preserving the installation and its data. Preinstalled Apple apps cannot be hidden using this feature. The exact options can vary with the iOS version and app type, so use the commands displayed on your iPhone.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Locking or hiding is useful when your concern is access rather than the app’s existence. It does not cancel a subscription, remove iCloud content or establish that the app is unsafe. Review those issues separately. If your goal is permanent removal, choose Delete App and confirm the deletion prompt.

Why can’t I delete an app on my iPhone?

If Delete App is missing, work through these checks before concluding that the app is malicious or permanently undeletable.

Check Screen Time restrictions

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  4. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  5. Open Deleting Apps and allow deletion.

A Screen Time passcode may be required. If the setting is controlled by a parent or guardian, ask that person to change it. A restriction explains why the command is unavailable; it does not identify the app as harmful.

Check device management

An iPhone managed by an employer, school or other organization can have app deletion blocked through mobile device management. Contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass the control. Management policies can be intentional and may apply even when you can see the app normally. The administrator can tell you whether the app is required and whether removal is permitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider other restriction software

Apple also identifies third-party restriction apps as a possible cause. Review installed restriction or parental-control software and its policy, using the administrator credentials if it is managed by someone else. Do not remove a restriction tool simply to force deletion if doing so could affect a family or organizational safety arrangement.

Rule out a non-deletable Apple app

Some built-in Apple apps are not removable. If the item is an Apple system app, the absence of Delete App can be an expected limitation. Regional availability also affects which built-in apps Apple permits you to remove. Check the app’s identity and role before looking for a workaround.

A safe troubleshooting sequence

When you are unsure whether an unfamiliar app is harmless, use this order so that you do not lose evidence or important data prematurely:

  1. Back up the iPhone before installing an iOS update or deleting anything.
  2. Install the update offered under Settings > General > Software Update, with power and Wi‑Fi connected.
  3. Locate the app in App Library and record its exact name.
  4. Look up that name in the App Store and review its permissions with Safety Check on iOS 16 or later if privacy is a concern.
  5. If Apple presents an explicit malware warning, delete the app as directed.
  6. Otherwise choose between keeping it, removing only its Home Screen icon, locking or hiding it, or deleting it.
  7. After deletion, review subscriptions separately and check whether the app stored photos or documents in iCloud.
  8. If deletion is unavailable, inspect Screen Time restrictions, organizational management and other restriction software.

This sequence separates an app you do not recognize from an app that iOS has identified as malicious, while preserving a backup and giving you a way to recover from an unwanted change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing disappearance with deletion: Removing an icon from the Home Screen leaves the app in App Library.
  • Assuming deletion cancels billing: Subscriptions require a separate cancellation step.
  • Assuming local deletion erases cloud files: Photos, documents or other data already stored in iCloud may remain.
  • Calling every unfamiliar app malware: Verify the developer and purpose first unless iOS has displayed Apple’s explicit malware warning.
  • Ignoring safety implications: Permission changes or deletion can affect someone else who uses the phone or relies on shared data.
  • Using unofficial update files: If the update is not offered on the device, use Apple’s computer-based Finder or iTunes process.
  • Trying to bypass management: Screen Time and organizational controls may be intentional and require the responsible administrator.

What should I check after the update or deletion?

Return to Settings > General > Software Update to confirm the installed version if needed. Then verify that the app is in the state you intended: in App Library if you removed only its Home Screen icon, in the Hidden folder if you hid it, or absent from the iPhone after deletion. Review any related subscription and check the relevant iCloud location for files you meant to retain or remove. These checks prevent a visual change from being mistaken for a complete account or data change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does removing an app from the Home Screen uninstall it?

No. Remove from Home Screen hides the icon but leaves the app installed in App Library with its local data, notifications and enabled permissions.

Will deleting an iPhone app cancel its subscription?

No. Delete the app and cancel an unwanted in-app subscription separately through the iPhone’s subscription management area.

Does deleting an app erase its iCloud data?

Not necessarily. Apple says local app data is removed from the iPhone, but photos, documents or other information already stored in iCloud may remain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an unfamiliar app automatically malware?

No. Check the exact name and developer in the App Store and review permissions. Treat it as malware when iOS displays Apple’s specific warning that the app contains malware and cannot be opened.

Where can I find an app that vanished from my Home Screen?

Swipe left past all Home Screen pages to App Library, then search by name or browse the alphabetical list.

Can I hide an app without deleting it?

Eligible downloaded apps can be locked or hidden with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. A hidden app moves to the authenticated Hidden folder in App Library; preinstalled Apple apps cannot be hidden this way.

Why is Delete App missing?

Screen Time restrictions, mobile-device management, third-party restriction software or a non-deletable built-in Apple app can remove that command. Check Content & Privacy Restrictions and contact the organization or administrator when applicable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if no iOS update appears?

Check Software Update on the iPhone first. Apple says to use a computer if an update does not appear on the device: newer macOS uses Finder, while older macOS and Windows use iTunes.

Should I back up before updating or deleting an app?

Yes. Make a current iCloud or computer backup and confirm it has completed before changing the operating system or removing an unfamiliar app.

The Bottom Line

Back up first, connect to power and Wi‑Fi, and use the update Apple offers under Settings > General > Software Update. Locate unfamiliar apps in App Library and verify them in the App Store. Choose deliberately: Remove from Home Screen keeps the app, lock or hide limits access, and Delete App removes the installation and local data. Handle subscriptions and iCloud files separately, and check Screen Time or device management when deletion is blocked.
