To update your iPhone manually, open Settings > General > Software Update, review the version shown, and follow the download and installation prompts. To automate full iOS updates, open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates and choose Automatically Install or Automatically Download. For the smaller security fixes Apple now labels Background Security Improvements, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements and turn on Automatically Install.
These are separate controls: automatic iOS updates handle complete operating-system releases, while Background Security Improvements add protection between those releases. Back up your iPhone before installing an update, and use the Software Update screen plus Apple’s security-release list to determine which version your particular model can receive.

What the two automatic-update controls do
iOS has two different update mechanisms, so enabling one does not automatically enable the other.

| Control | What it installs | What happens without further action | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatically Install under Automatic Updates | Complete iOS updates | The iPhone downloads and installs an available update overnight when it is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. Apple says you are notified before installation. | Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates |
| Automatically Download under Automatic Updates | Complete iOS updates | The update downloads automatically, but you decide when to install it. | Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates |
| Automatically Install under Background Security Improvements | Additional security improvements delivered between full iOS updates | Eligible improvements install automatically as Apple makes them available. | Settings > Privacy > Security > Background Security Improvements |
Background Security Improvements are not a replacement for normal iOS updates. A full update can contain new features, broader security fixes, compatibility changes, and the system components needed for later improvements. Turning on the security-improvement switch does not install a pending major iOS release, and turning on full automatic updates does not prove that the separate security switch is enabled.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Before you install an iOS update
Apple recommends creating an automatic backup or making a manual backup before updating. A backup gives you a recovery point if you need to restore the phone or replace it during the process. It also protects important information if an update is interrupted or the device later needs service.
- Confirm that the iPhone is connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network if you plan to download the update on the phone.
- For an overnight automatic installation, leave the iPhone connected to its charger and Wi-Fi. Those are the conditions Apple specifies for the overnight process.
- Use the phone’s own Software Update screen to see the version already installed and the update offered to that model.
- Read the update description before tapping the install control so you know which release the phone is proposing.
- Allow enough time for downloading, preparation, restarting, and installation if you are doing the update manually. Do not begin immediately before a call, trip, or other activity that requires the phone.
You do not need to buy a new charger, cable, computer, or subscription to use these settings. The update process uses the iPhone, its existing connection, and Apple’s software. A computer is an alternative route, not a normal prerequisite.
How to check for and install an iOS update manually
- Open Settings. Find the gray gear icon on the Home Screen or in the App Library.
- Tap General. This section contains system-management controls.
- Tap Software Update. The page identifies the iOS version currently installed and reports whether an update is available for that iPhone.
- Review the offer. Read the version number and the information displayed on the update page. Availability depends on the iPhone model and the software branch Apple is supporting for it.
- Start the update. If an update is offered, tap the on-screen download or install control and follow the prompts. The iPhone may restart while installation completes.
The Software Update page is the best first check because it evaluates the particular model and software already on the phone. A version number mentioned by a friend, shown in a video, or listed in an older article does not establish that your iPhone can receive that release.

That message can be correct even when another iPhone model is showing a different version. Models can have different eligibility and may receive updates from separate branches.
What to read on the Software Update screen
The page shows the installed iOS version and, when applicable, an available update. Use the installed-version line to record what is on the phone before you change anything. If an update is offered, review its version number and the explanatory text before accepting it. This prevents confusing a small security improvement with a complete operating-system update.
If more than one choice or release branch is presented, do not pick solely by number. Apple can support more than one branch for different devices, so the option shown for your model is the relevant one. The phone’s eligibility check is more useful than trying to force a version intended for another model.
How to turn on automatic iOS updates
Choose Automatically Install for a hands-off update
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Tap Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Automatically Install.
With Automatically Install enabled, an available full iOS update can download and install overnight when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. Apple says the phone notifies you before the installation. This option is the closest match to “update my iPhone automatically”: after you enable it, you normally do not have to return to Software Update for each release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAutomatic installation is still subject to the conditions Apple describes. If the phone is not charging or does not have Wi-Fi when the overnight process is scheduled, installation may wait until those conditions are met. Keep the phone plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi when you want the best chance of an overnight update.

Choose Automatically Download when you want to approve installation
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
- Turn off Automatically Install if it is enabled.
- Turn on Automatically Download.
Automatically Download fetches the update in the background but leaves installation to you. When you are ready, return to Settings > General > Software Update and use the install option shown there. Apple’s instructions specify that Automatically Install must be turned off for the Automatically Download choice to appear.
This setting is useful when you want the package ready but need to choose the restart time yourself. It is not a complete hands-off mode: downloading does not mean that the operating system has been installed.
Which automatic option should you use?
| Your priority | Recommended setting | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| You want the fewest decisions and are comfortable with an overnight restart. | Automatically Install | The update may install overnight under the charging and Wi-Fi conditions Apple specifies. |
| You want the download completed but want to choose the installation time. | Automatically Download | You must return to Software Update and start installation yourself. |
| You want the smaller security improvements delivered between full releases. | Enable Background Security Improvements > Automatically Install separately. | This does not turn on full iOS updates. |
There is no need to enable both full-update choices. Automatically Download is the download-first alternative that appears when Automatically Install is off. Background Security Improvements is a third, separate setting and can be enabled regardless of which full-update workflow you prefer.
How to enable automatic security responses (Background Security Improvements)
Apple’s current Settings label for what many people call “Rapid Security Responses” or “automatic security responses” is Background Security Improvements. The setting supplies additional protection between ordinary software updates. It is designed for eligible security changes that do not have to wait for the next complete release.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Background Security Improvements.
- Turn on Automatically Install.
After this switch is enabled, Apple can deliver eligible security improvements without waiting for the next complete iOS release. Keep the regular Automatic Updates control enabled as well if you want full iOS releases to install automatically; the two switches govern different types of software. Enabling one is not a substitute for checking the other.
What happens if a background improvement causes a compatibility problem?
Apple notes that, in rare cases, a Background Security Improvement may be temporarily removed because of compatibility issues and then included again in a future software update. That means an improvement is not necessarily permanent as a standalone package, and the feature should not be treated as a guarantee that every security change remains installed independently of iOS. Continue installing ordinary iOS updates even when this switch is on.
Why the wording may look different on your iPhone
Settings labels can vary by iOS version. Newer Apple support instructions use Background Security Improvements, while older versions may use wording associated with Rapid Security Responses. If your menu uses a slightly different label, look for the corresponding security-improvement control under Privacy & Security and tap Learn More when it is available. Do not enable an unrelated privacy switch simply because its name contains the word “security.”
How to verify that updates are configured
Check full iOS update automation
Return to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Confirm whether Automatically Install or Automatically Download is on. Only one of those full-update choices is needed for your preferred workflow; Automatically Download is exposed when Automatically Install is off.

Check Background Security Improvements
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements and verify that Automatically Install is on. This check is separate from the Automatic Updates page, so checking only the latter does not confirm that background security improvements are enabled.
Check the installed version
Open Settings > General > Software Update. The page reports the installed iOS version and whether Apple offers another update. This is the authoritative, device-specific check; a version number shown on another iPhone, in a video, or on a news page does not establish that your model can install it.
Common choices and pitfalls
- Confusing download with installation: Automatically Download prepares the package but does not finish the update. Return to Software Update and start installation when you choose.
- Assuming one switch controls everything: Full iOS updates and Background Security Improvements have separate menu paths and separate switches.
- Expecting an overnight install without power or Wi-Fi: Apple describes charging and Wi-Fi as the overnight conditions. Connect both before leaving the phone overnight.
- Skipping a backup: Apple recommends an automatic or manual backup before updating. Do that before tapping install, especially before a major release.
- Forcing a version number: The model and installed software determine eligibility. Use the release offered on your phone rather than trying to install a package meant for another device.
- Treating a security improvement as permanent: Apple says an improvement can be temporarily removed in rare compatibility cases and delivered again in a later software update.
- Relying on an old menu name: Look under Privacy & Security for the current corresponding control and use Learn More if the wording differs.
Why your iPhone may not show the version you expect
Apple does not make every iOS release available to every iPhone. Eligibility depends on the model and the software already installed, and Apple can maintain more than one supported branch at the same time. A device may therefore show an earlier branch while a newer model receives a later release.

At the time of the source check for this guide, that list identified iOS 27.0.1 as the latest release, but that figure is time-sensitive and should not be treated as a universal requirement. Check the live list and your own Software Update screen instead of manually forcing a version number.
Apple also states on its release list that, after installation, the latest version cannot be downgraded to the previous version. This is a general post-install behavior, not a reason to postpone a security update that your device is eligible to receive. Read the release information and make your backup before proceeding.
If no update appears
The phone says it is up to date
First, confirm the installed version on Settings > General > Software Update. Then compare that result with Apple’s current security-release list and the supported-device information for the release. If your model is on a different branch, seeing an older number can be expected.
The menu name is different
Use the closest corresponding control shown by your iOS version. Full updates remain under Settings > General > Software Update. Security improvements are under Settings > Privacy & Security, although the exact wording can change between releases. The Learn More link on the phone can explain the version-specific setting.

An installation does not complete
Do not assume that changing the security-response switch will repair a failed full update; they are separate systems. Recheck the Software Update page for the exact status and use Apple’s dedicated update-troubleshooting guidance for the specific error, storage condition, or network problem displayed by the phone. Avoid deleting files or changing unrelated settings until you know what message the phone reports.

Apple also documents updating an iPhone by connecting it to a computer. This is an alternative to the on-device Settings route, not a requirement for ordinary updates. Most readers can use Settings > General > Software Update; use the computer method when Apple’s instructions for your device or a displayed error specifically direct you to it.
A computer update does not change the purpose of the automatic controls. After the installation, return to the iPhone’s Automatic Updates and Background Security Improvements pages and confirm your preferred switches. A one-time computer update should not be mistaken for an ongoing automatic-update setting.

What to do after an update
Once the phone finishes and returns to the Home Screen, allow it to reconnect to Wi-Fi and complete any on-screen prompts. Then check Settings > General > Software Update again. The page should show the newly installed version or explain if another release is available for the model.
Also revisit both automation pages. Major iOS changes can alter labels or present a different arrangement, so verify Automatically Install or Automatically Download under Automatic Updates and verify Background Security Improvements > Automatically Install separately. This quick check confirms that your intended workflow is still configured.
A practical update routine
- Make an automatic or manual backup before installing a full iOS update.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and record what version the iPhone reports.
- Install an offered update manually, or configure Automatic Updates according to whether you want automatic installation or download-only behavior.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements and turn on Automatically Install.
- Keep the iPhone charging and on Wi-Fi when you expect an overnight automatic installation.
- After a major update, revisit both pages to confirm that your choices remain enabled and that the installed version is the one you intended.
- For questions about a particular release, consult Apple’s current security-release list rather than relying on a version number from an older article.

How do I enable automatic security responses on iPhone?
Apple’s current label is Background Security Improvements. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements and turn on Automatically Install.
Do Background Security Improvements replace iOS updates?
No. They provide additional protection between full releases. Keep installing ordinary iOS updates because those releases can include broader security fixes, features, compatibility changes, and required system components.
Why can’t I find Background Security Improvements?
The wording varies by iOS version. Look under Settings > Privacy & Security for the corresponding security-improvement control, including wording associated with Rapid Security Responses on older software, and tap Learn More when available.
Why does my iPhone show an older iOS version than another iPhone?
Apple’s available version depends on the model and installed software, and Apple can maintain separate supported branches. Check your own Software Update screen and Apple’s security-release list for supported-device details.
Can I downgrade after installing the latest iOS?
Apple’s security-release list states that the latest version cannot be downgraded to the previous version after installation. Back up first and review the release offered to your model before proceeding.
Do I need to buy equipment or a subscription to update iOS?
No. The iPhone’s Settings app, an existing Wi-Fi connection, and charging are sufficient for the normal process. Apple also documents a computer route as an alternative, not a requirement.
The Bottom Line
Back up your iPhone, check Settings > General > Software Update, and install the release offered for your model. For hands-off full updates, enable Automatic Updates > Automatically Install; for download-only control, use Automatically Download with installation turned off. Separately enable Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements > Automatically Install so eligible security fixes can arrive between full iOS releases.
