To update your iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update, install an update offered for your device, then test Apple Podcasts on a working internet connection. If something fails, identify whether the problem is the iOS installation, Apple’s service, the app itself, or episode downloads—each calls for different checks.
Check and install an iOS update
- Check compatibility and storage. Open Settings > General > Software Update. Your iPhone shows the software available to that device. Confirm it has enough free storage; the compatible release depends on your iPhone model. See Apple’s iPhone update guidance.
- Connect to the internet and power. Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection and keep the iPhone connected to power while updating. The download time varies with the update size and connection speed; Apple does not give a universal duration. Apple’s over-the-air update instructions cover these requirements.
- Install the offered update. Follow the on-screen prompts in Software Update. When installation finishes, return to the screen to confirm the update completed.
If the iPhone won’t update
If it cannot reach or verify the update server, try again on the current network, then switch to another network if possible. A computer is another update route. Test Apple Podcasts connectivity and playback
- Check for a service issue. Visit Apple System Status and check whether Podcasts is reporting a problem. Status can change, so check it when the issue occurs.
- Verify the connection. Open a website on the iPhone. If it does not load, try another network. If other devices on the same network also cannot connect, restart the router or contact your internet provider. If only this iPhone has trouble, check whether a VPN or third-party security app could be interfering.
- Check cellular access if relevant. When using cellular rather than Wi-Fi, make sure Podcasts is allowed to use cellular data. Also check that the iPhone’s date and time are correct.
- Try Podcasts again. Open the app, load a show, and play an episode. This tests access and playback before you troubleshoot downloads or syncing.
Apple’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends checking service status, network access, and security software when a service cannot connect.
If Apple Podcasts won’t open or stops responding
A frozen or closing app is different from a connection error: start with the app and device rather than changing download settings.

- Close Podcasts and reopen it.
- Restart the iPhone, then try the app again.
- Check the App Store for an update to Podcasts.
- If the app still fails, check for an iOS update using Settings > General > Software Update.
- Only after those steps, consider deleting and redownloading Podcasts. Apple warns that data stored in the app may be lost.
If it continues to fail, use Apple’s steps for an app that won’t load, stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open to find the appropriate support route.
If episodes stop downloading or syncing
If Podcasts opens and streams but new episodes are missing, check download and sync behavior before treating it as an app failure. On supported iPhone software, open Settings > Apps > Podcasts and review Automatically Download, Remove Played Downloads, and Sync Library. Also inspect the settings for the individual show.

Automatic downloads and cross-device syncing are separate controls: enabling one does not establish that the other is enabled. Apple notes that a followed show that has not been watched or listened to for a while may stop downloading new episodes automatically; the show page provides a way to resume automatic downloads. If the Podcasts app itself won’t update
If the problem is an App Store update that will not download, try prioritizing the pending download from the Home Screen if that option appears, then restart the iPhone and try again. A payment-method issue or, in some regions, an age-confirmation requirement may also prevent downloads. If the update still will not install, follow Apple’s App Store download troubleshooting or contact Apple Support.
