To change a saved bookmark in desktop Chrome, open More > Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark Manager, choose the bookmark’s More > Edit action, replace http:// with https:// in its URL, and save. Confirm the site supports HTTPS, then open the edited bookmark and check that it reaches the intended page without a connection or certificate warning.
Change a bookmark’s saved URL in desktop Chrome
- In Chrome, select More > Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark Manager. Google documents this path for computers; labels can vary by Chrome version or platform. Google Chrome Help: Manage bookmarks.
- Find the bookmark, open its More menu, and select Edit.
- In the URL field, change the initial
http://tohttps://. Keep the rest of the address if it still identifies the page you want. For example, changehttp://example.com/pathtohttps://example.com/path. - Save the change, then open the bookmark. Check that the intended page loads without a certificate or connection warning.
Changing the scheme does not repair an address if the page has moved or the site no longer serves it. If HTTPS fails or leads somewhere different, restore the original address or find the site’s current secure URL before updating the bookmark.
Bookmark editing and automatic HTTPS upgrades are different
Chrome’s Always use secure connections setting can upgrade eligible navigations to HTTPS and warn before visiting a site that does not support it. On desktop, find it at More > Settings > Privacy and security > Security. Chrome offers warnings for insecure public sites, or for public and private sites. Google Chrome Help: Manage Chrome safety and security.
| Approach | Does the saved bookmark URL change? | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Edit the bookmark | Yes. You replace the URL stored in the bookmark. | Updates that bookmark’s saved address. |
| Always use secure connections | Google’s help describes upgrades to URLs during navigation, not rewriting saved bookmark URLs. | Attempts HTTPS for eligible navigations and warns when a site does not support it. |
If your goal is for the bookmark itself to contain an HTTPS address, edit it in Bookmark Manager. If you want Chrome to attempt secure navigation more generally, use the setting; it is not a substitute for changing the stored URL.

Update several bookmarks carefully
Google documents an Edit control for bulk editing in the bookmarks navigation panel, but its help does not say that this control can replace URL schemes across selected bookmarks. Chrome also supports exporting bookmarks to an HTML file and importing them later; Google says imported bookmarks go to the bookmarks bar if there were no existing bookmarks, and otherwise to an Other bookmarks folder. Google Chrome Help: Import or export bookmarks.
- Export a backup of your bookmarks before making bulk changes.
- Review each URL before changing its scheme. An HTML export does not provide a documented automatic HTTP-to-HTTPS conversion in Chrome; any file editing or scripted replacement is a manual workflow.
- Preserve the original export, import the revised file, and verify the changed entries before discarding the backup.
When an administrator controls the bookmark
If a bookmark is managed by a work or school administrator, you may not be able to change it yourself. Google says administrators can change a managed bookmark’s name or URL in the Google Admin console. Ask your organization’s Chrome administrator to update it.
