Whether an update exists—and how to install it—depends on the exact drive model, product class, and manufacturer instructions. First identify the drive and check its official support page; if no update is offered, do not use firmware made for a similar model. A working Western Digital drive may not need an update: WD says firmware is installed during manufacture and there is no need to upgrade it if the drive is working.
1. Check whether an update is available for your exact drive
Before downloading anything, identify the drive precisely. Record its manufacturer, full model or part number, serial number, and current firmware revision. You can often find these on the drive label or in the manufacturer’s utility or your operating system’s drive information. Use the manufacturer’s support page or drive-specific firmware finder to check for an update.

For Seagate drives, the Download Finder requests the serial number and model or part number. Seagate says firmware updates are available only for certain drive families. If the finder shows no applicable update, do not substitute a third-party file or firmware for a similar-looking model.
WD’s guidance depends on product class. Its support article, updated June 12, 2026, says most internal and external WD drives do not have firmware updates. It warns against attempting manual updates on WD portable or desktop drives because updating the enclosure or the drive inside may cause damage, and says OEM drives are unsupported. For supported retail color-brand HDDs, WD routes updates through Windows software and names Kitfox for internal drive updates. Certain in-warranty Ultrastar drives may have updates through WD Support after registration and submission of the model, current firmware revision, and label details. Check the current WD firmware policy for your exact product class.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Prepare the computer and protect your data
Back up important files to a separate location before starting. Seagate warns that an incorrectly performed update could destroy data or render the drive inoperable. Its instructions state: “If the upgrade instructions are not followed properly, the upgrade could be data-destructive and/or render your hard drive inoperable.”
- Save your work and close open applications.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power. Do not shut it down or interrupt power while an update is running.
- Disconnect external storage if the exact utility’s instructions direct you to do so.
- Do not run the Seagate utility described in its instructions on a RAID system. If the drive is part of RAID, is inside an OEM computer, or the supported process is unclear, stop and ask the drive manufacturer or system builder.
Seagate’s general firmware guidance also recommends backing up data and checking the drive-specific finder before proceeding.

3. Use only the instructions and package for that model
Seagate: follow the compatibility checks
Seagate’s documented Firmware Update Utility instructions tell users to check the package title for supported products and firmware versions. In that workflow, the computer restarts into an update environment, scans for drives, and displays each detected drive’s model, serial number, and current firmware revision before loading an update. The utility may exit without installing if the drive is already current, the firmware is incompatible, or no matching model is found. Treat those outcomes as stop signals; do not bypass the checks or force an update.

WD’s supported retail HDD update route is different from its SSD procedures and from updates for portable, desktop, OEM, or enterprise products. Follow the current instructions for the exact drive rather than assuming a Windows tool or procedure applies to every WD drive.

SSD instructions are also model-specific. Older WD SSD Dashboard manuals describe SSD-specific operations, not a general hard-drive update method. For example, a WD Green SATA SSD manual says to keep wall power connected and that a full system shutdown may be required to complete that model’s update. That detail is not a universal requirement for other SSDs or HDDs; use the current instructions for your product.

Follow the utility’s prompts through completion, including any reboot or shutdown it requires. Do not interrupt the process. Afterward, use the manufacturer’s tool or operating-system drive information to check the displayed firmware revision against the revision reported before the update.
