For the system, open Settings > System > About > System update. For apps, open the Google Play Store, choose your profile icon, then select Manage apps & games > Updates > Update all. You can also enable automatic app updates in the Play Store settings. The exact wording can vary by manufacturer and model, so use the device maker’s support instructions if these controls are missing.
What “updating Google TV” actually means
“Update Google TV” can describe two different jobs:

- System software update: updates the software that runs the television or streaming device itself. This control is in Google TV’s System settings.
- App updates: updates individual applications such as streaming, music, or utility apps installed through Google Play. These updates are managed in the Play Store.
They are independent. Installing the latest version of an app does not update the TV’s operating system, and installing a system update does not necessarily update every installed app. Check each area when you are troubleshooting a problem or maintaining the device.

Check for a Google TV system update
Use the built-in System update control
- From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open About.
- Choose System update.
- If an update is offered, follow the instructions shown on the screen.
This route checks the device software, not the apps in your Play Store library. If the screen says the system is current, there is no newer system package being offered to that device at that moment.
If the labels are different
Google notes that menu names and steps can differ between devices. Television manufacturers and streaming-device makers can customize the settings layout, and a model may present the same control under slightly different wording. Do not assume a missing label means the device cannot update. Search the manufacturer’s support site for the exact model and software interface. Google directs users to the device manufacturer for device-specific help; its unresponsive-device guidance explains this boundary.
What to expect after starting a system update
The available system-update screen and its prompts determine what happens next. Read each prompt and use the on-screen controls rather than trying to start the same update from the Play Store. Google’s general instructions do not promise that every update will resolve freezing, crashes, or lag; they identify checking for updates as one troubleshooting step. If the device remains unusable, continue with the manufacturer’s model-specific support process.

Update installed apps manually
Update every app that has a pending version
- Open or search for Google Play Store on the TV.
- Select your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Manage apps & games.
- Open Updates.
- Select Update all.
This command applies the available updates shown in the TV’s update list. It is separate from the System update page, so use the Play Store route when an app is outdated even if the device software is current.
When you only need to deal with one app
The Updates view is the place to review which installed apps have newer versions available. If you are investigating one crashing or misbehaving app, identify it in that list and use the update control presented for that app instead of updating the whole library. The wording and available controls can vary by device, so follow the labels displayed on your TV.
Allow the update process to finish
Google warns: Important: Your TV might be slower while app updates are in progress.
That temporary slowdown is expected during installation and is not, by itself, evidence that the update failed. Avoid judging performance until the pending app work has completed. The warning appears in Google’s guide to fixing a slow or laggy Google TV device.

Turn on automatic app updates
- Open Google Play Store.
- Select your profile picture or initial.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Auto-update apps.
- Select the automatic-update option shown for your device.
Automatic updates apply to apps, not to the Google TV system software control described earlier. The exact choices can differ by device. If the setting is unavailable or behaves differently, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for that model.
System software versus app updates

Google’s Android phone and tablet help also discusses automatic updates, but those instructions should not be transplanted onto a TV. Use the TV-specific Play Store labels above rather than assuming a phone menu will appear on Google TV. The general Android reference is available at Google Play Help.
Troubleshoot a system update that is missing or does not solve the problem
The System update entry is not where expected
First verify that you are looking in the device’s system settings, not in the Play Store. Then check whether the manufacturer has renamed or relocated the item. Google’s instructions are general and do not guarantee identical menus on every brand or model. Record the exact model name and software screen, then use the manufacturer’s support channel for the correct route.

The TV says it is current
A current-status message means the device is not being offered a newer system package through that check. It does not tell you whether an individual app is current. Open the Play Store’s Updates area separately if an app appears outdated or a service is reporting an app-version problem.
The TV remains slow, freezes, or feels unresponsive
Check both update areas, but treat updates as troubleshooting steps rather than a guaranteed cure. If you have just selected Update all, wait for those installations to finish before evaluating responsiveness because Google specifically cautions that app updates can slow the TV temporarily. If the device is still unresponsive, follow the model maker’s instructions in addition to Google’s unresponsive Google TV guidance.

Confirm that the app appears in the Play Store’s update list and that its update has completed. If the app continues to crash, Google’s separate guidance recommends closing the app or contacting the app developer rather than assuming another system update will fix it. Use Google’s app-crash instructions for that branch.
The update controls cannot connect or show no list
Check the TV’s internet connection before retrying. Google’s setup documentation lists Wi‑Fi and Ethernet as connection methods. If other online services also fail, resolve the connectivity problem first; an update screen cannot retrieve a package or app list without network access. For device-specific network behavior, use the manufacturer’s support instructions.
The interface changes while apps install
Temporary slowness during app updates can affect navigation and responsiveness. Allow the update activity to finish, then reassess the TV. If the slowdown persists after the update work is complete, check for a system update and use Google’s slow-device troubleshooting guidance rather than repeatedly starting the same app update.

When to contact the manufacturer
Use the manufacturer’s support service when the documented path is absent, the labels do not match your model, a device-specific update repeatedly fails, or the TV remains unresponsive after the general checks. Google’s help pages deliberately set this boundary because manufacturers control model-specific firmware delivery and interface details. Provide the model, the menu path you tried, the message shown on screen, and whether the internet connection uses Wi‑Fi or Ethernet so support can distinguish a menu difference from a failed update.
