The right change depends on your role: action maintainers set runs.using: node24 and release an updated action; workflow users update uses: to a compatible release. actions/setup-node is a separate setting for Node used by your job’s own commands.
First, identify which Node version you need to change
There are two separate Node.js settings in GitHub Actions. The JavaScript runtime for an action comes from that action’s metadata and the runner’s supported runtime. The Node version installed for commands in your workflow comes from actions/setup-node. Changing one does not change the other.
| Your situation | Change to make | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| You maintain a JavaScript action | Set the action metadata’s runs.using to node24, validate the action, and publish a new release. |
The action maintainer |
| You use an action maintained elsewhere | Update the workflow’s uses: reference to a release that supports Node 24. |
The workflow owner selects a release; the action maintainer publishes it. |
| Your workflow commands need Node 24 | Configure actions/setup-node with node-version: '24'. |

GitHub says its newest first-party action versions have been updated. That does not establish compatibility for every third-party action: check each project’s release notes or metadata before changing its reference. GitHub’s September 23, 2026 notice
If you maintain a JavaScript action, set its runtime to Node 24
In the action’s action.yml or action.yaml, change the JavaScript runtime declaration from node20 to node24. Keep the existing entry point if it is still correct:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
runs:
using: node24
main: dist/index.js
The important setting is using. If your metadata declares pre or post scripts, those entry points use the runtime selected there too. Review their code and the dependencies included in the action’s released package, not just the metadata file. GitHub’s metadata reference documents the node24 runtime, while its JavaScript action guide covers bundling dependencies and testing an action in a workflow.
- Update
runs.usingin the action metadata. - Check the main, pre, and post entry points your action declares, along with the dependencies packaged for them.
- Test the updated action in a workflow on the runner operating systems and architectures you support.
- Publish a new release and identify the release or tag that contains the Node 24 change so workflow users can select it.
Changing the metadata in your repository does not update versions that consumers already reference. GitHub’s notice explicitly asks action maintainers to publish a new release after making the runtime change. GitHub Changelog notice

If you use an action, update its workflow reference
For actions maintained by someone else, find the relevant uses: lines in your workflow files and reusable workflows. Select a published release whose maintainer confirms Node 24 support; do not assume all actions have the same compatible version number.
steps:
- uses: OWNER/REPOSITORY@RELEASE
Replace OWNER/REPOSITORY@RELEASE with the action and release reference used by your project. Consult the action’s release notes or current metadata, and follow your repository’s pinning policy. First-party GitHub actions and third-party actions can have different release histories, so verify each dependency rather than making a blanket version change. GitHub’s runtime-transition notice

Use setup-node only for Node in your workflow commands
If build, test, or script commands in the job need Node 24, configure actions/setup-node separately. GitHub’s current example uses:
- uses: actions/setup-node@v7
with:
node-version: '24'
This installs/selects Node for the workflow’s commands. It does not switch a JavaScript action from Node 20 to Node 24; that action’s runtime is declared by its own runs.using metadata and depends on the runner’s supported runtime. GitHub’s Node.js workflow tutorial shows the setup-node pattern.

Check runner operating system and architecture
GitHub’s September 23, 2026 notice says Node 24 is incompatible with macOS 13.4 and earlier and does not officially support ARM32. If you use self-hosted runners on either of those environments, move the runner to a supported operating system and architecture for Node 24 JavaScript actions. GitHub Changelog notice
Validate the migration in the workflow that will run it
- Identify which workflow actions you maintain locally and which are external dependencies.
- For each local JavaScript action, inspect its
runs.using, entry points, and packaged dependencies; update and release it if needed. - For each external action, confirm the maintainer’s Node 24 support and update the workflow’s
uses:reference to the appropriate release. - Separately set up Node 24 with
actions/setup-nodeif the job’s own commands require it. - Run the affected workflow on the operating system and architecture used by the project, then review the logs for failures.
These checks follow GitHub’s action-development guidance on packaging dependencies and testing actions in a workflow. GitHub’s action testing and development guide
