Open the new checking account before changing any instructions. Then inventory every deposit and withdrawal tied to the old account, update each payer and biller separately, confirm the first deposit date, and keep enough money in the old account for transactions still in flight. Close the old account only after activity has moved successfully and you have written confirmation of closure.
This U.S.-focused sequence follows the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s guidance: “When moving your checking account to a new bank or credit union, open the new account first and update any automatic transactions, direct deposit, or payment paperwork.”

The safe order for changing accounts
A checking-account switch is not one universal change. Your employer, a government agency, a utility, a credit-card issuer, a subscription service, and your bank’s bill-pay system may each hold separate instructions. Changing only the account at your bank does not automatically update those organizations.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open and verify the new account. Make sure it is active and able to receive deposits and send payments.
- Inventory the old account. Review statements, transaction history, scheduled transfers, checks, deposits, and recurring withdrawals.
- Change incoming deposits. Update your employer, payroll provider, and benefit agencies through their own processes.
- Change outgoing payments. Update each company-initiated debit with the company, and separately update recurring payments scheduled through your bank.
- Confirm effective dates. Ask when the first deposit or debit will actually use the new account.
- Keep the old account funded. Leave enough for outstanding checks and pending withdrawals.
- Verify the overlap. Watch both accounts until deposits and payments are working from the new one.
- Transfer the balance and close the old account. Obtain written confirmation from the former institution.
The CFPB does not establish one processing time that applies to every employer, bank, benefit program, and biller. Treat each organization’s confirmed effective date as controlling rather than assuming the change will take effect by a particular payday or billing cycle.

Build a complete account inventory before changing anything
Start with several months of old-account statements and the account’s scheduled-payment screen. Include items that occur only quarterly, annually, or irregularly; a short review can miss an insurance premium, tax payment, annual subscription, or an infrequent transfer.
Incoming money to list
- Employer wages and reimbursements
- Payroll-provider deposits
- Social Security or other government benefits
- Pension, annuity, investment, or retirement distributions
- Transfers from another person or account
- Any other recurring deposit credited to the old account
Outgoing money to list
- Rent or mortgage payments
- Utilities, internet, mobile service, and insurance
- Credit-card, loan, and other debt payments
- Subscriptions and memberships
- Taxes, tuition, childcare, and other scheduled obligations
- Checks that have been written but have not cleared
- Transfers and recurring payments scheduled inside the old bank’s bill-pay service
Record the payee, amount or amount range, usual withdrawal date, payment method, and the organization that must be contacted. Mark whether the instruction belongs to the biller or to the old bank. That distinction determines where you make the change.
Understand which organization controls each payment
There are two commonly confused automatic-payment mechanisms. A company automatic debit is authorized with the company that withdraws the money. Recurring bank bill pay is scheduled through your bank, which sends the payment under instructions stored in its system. They require different updates.
| Channel | Who holds the instruction | Where to update it | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employer or payroll deposit | Employer or payroll provider | Your employer’s payroll or human-resources process | The first pay date and whether the new account is active for that run |
| Social Security deposit | Social Security Administration | My Social Security, or ask whether your bank offers SSA Automated Enrollment | When SSA will use the new account; bank enrollment is not offered by every bank |
| Company-initiated automatic debit | The biller or service provider | The company’s account or payment-support process | The first withdrawal from the new account and cancellation of the old authorization |
| Recurring bank bill pay | Your bank’s bill-pay system | The bank’s bill-pay interface or support team | Whether an existing recurring instruction was changed, canceled, or recreated |
Do not assume that changing a bank account number with one organization updates another. Each row is a separate task unless the organization explicitly confirms otherwise.
Open and prepare the new account
1. Confirm the account is ready
Open the replacement checking account before submitting deposit or payment changes. Confirm that you have the correct routing and account numbers, the account name matches the payer’s records, and the account can accept direct deposits and electronic debits. Keep the opening documentation and any confirmation numbers.
2. Decide how much money to place there initially
You do not need to move every dollar immediately. Put enough in the new account to support the first payment activity you intentionally move there, while preserving the old-account cushion described below. A staged transfer reduces the risk of an overdraft caused by a payment that arrives earlier than expected.

3. Preserve access to both accounts
Keep online access, statements, debit-card information, and contact details for both institutions during the transition. You may need the old account’s history to identify a transaction or prove that an instruction was canceled.

Employer wages
Use the employer’s or payroll provider’s designated process. It may require the new routing and account numbers, account type, a voided check, or verification through a payroll portal. Submit the change early enough for the payroll department’s stated cutoff, but do not infer a universal lead time from another employer.
Ask payroll which paycheck will be the first one sent to the new account. If the change misses a cutoff, the old account may receive another deposit; that is a timing issue, not evidence that the new details are incorrect. Keep the old account open and funded until you have confirmed the transition.
Social Security benefits
The Social Security Administration says customers can update bank information online through my Social Security. Follow the agency’s account-update instructions and save the confirmation. You can also ask your bank whether it supports SSA’s Automated Enrollment process. That bank-submitted option is not available from every bank, so verify availability rather than assuming the bank can make the change for you.
Other benefit or distribution payers
Contact each payer directly and ask for its account-change procedure and effective date. A pension administrator, investment provider, or another government program may use a different form or verification method. Record the date the payer says the new account will be used.

Company-initiated debits
For a utility, lender, card issuer, insurer, subscription, or other biller that pulls money from your account, sign in to that company’s payment settings or contact its billing department. Replace the old account details with the new routing and account numbers, then ask when the first debit will use the new account.

Do not cancel the old instruction until you know how the company handles the replacement. The goal is one payment, not two. Once the company confirms that the new instruction is active, cancel or remove the old debit according to the company’s process. Save the confirmation or reference number.
Recurring bank bill pay
If the old bank’s bill-pay service sends payments for you, update the recurring schedule in that bank’s bill-pay system or ask the bank how to recreate it at the new institution. A bill-pay schedule is not the same as a company-initiated debit: the bank may send an electronic payment or a check under the schedule you created.
Review the payee, amount, frequency, delivery date, and funding account at the new bank. Confirm whether the old bank’s schedule was canceled; otherwise both systems could send a payment.
One-time and irregular payments
Review pending transfers, one-time electronic payments, checks, and payments you initiated manually. A transaction already released by the old bank may still settle there even after you change future instructions. Note its expected status and retain enough funds to cover it.
Coordinate the first deposit and first debit
The safest handoff is based on confirmed dates, not assumptions. Ask each payer and biller:
- When was the new account information accepted?
- What is the first deposit or withdrawal date using it?
- What happens if the change misses the next processing cutoff?
- Will the old instruction remain active, and how is it canceled?
The CFPB advises arranging automatic debits from the new account to begin after the first deposit reaches that account. This sequencing gives the new account funds before a bill is pulled. It also helps prevent a duplicate payment when an old and new instruction overlap.

Keep a deliberate cushion in the old account
Leave enough money in the old account to cover checks you have written and payments that have been authorized but have not yet posted. Include pending card or electronic transactions visible in the account, along with any scheduled bill-pay items you have not canceled or recreated.
The amount depends on your own outstanding transactions; there is no universal cushion figure in the CFPB guidance. Reconcile the old account against your inventory, and add funds if a newly discovered payment is due before closure. Closing or emptying the account too soon can cause a transaction to be returned or can result in fees.
Monitor both accounts during the overlap
Check transaction history frequently while the switch is in progress. For each incoming item, verify that the amount appears in the new account and that no expected deposit has been diverted or delayed. For each outgoing item, check that it was withdrawn once, from the intended account, for the expected amount.
Keep evidence of completed changes: screenshots or downloaded confirmations, support messages, confirmation numbers, and the date you spoke with an organization. If a payment appears twice, contact the biller or bank that controls the instruction and ask which one should be reversed or canceled. Avoid simply removing funds while a legitimate payment is still pending.
Transfer the remaining balance and close the old account
Close only after activity has shifted
Wait until deposits and payments are flowing through the new account and the old-account inventory shows no unresolved items. Recheck for annual or infrequent transactions before deciding the transition is complete.
Best Value
Move the remaining funds
Transfer the remaining balance using a method offered by the institutions, while leaving sufficient funds for any final pending transaction. After the transfer, review the old account again for late-posting items.
Request written confirmation
Ask the former bank or credit union to confirm in writing that the account is closed. Keep that confirmation with your final statements. Written proof can help resolve a later question about a transaction or an account status.
Troubleshooting common transition problems
The first paycheck still went to the old account
Contact payroll to confirm whether the change was submitted before its cutoff and which pay date will use the new details. Leave the old account open and funded until payroll confirms the next effective deposit.
A Social Security deposit did not move
Check the update status in my Social Security or contact the agency through its official support channel. If you expected your bank to submit the change through Automated Enrollment, ask the bank whether it offers that service and whether your request was accepted. Not every bank participates.
A bill was withdrawn from the wrong account
Identify whether the biller or the bank’s bill-pay system initiated the withdrawal. Contact that organization, confirm the new instruction’s effective date, and keep the old account funded until all authorized old payments have cleared.
The same bill was paid twice
Look for an old company debit plus a new company debit, or an old bank bill-pay schedule plus a new one. Contact the organization controlling the duplicate instruction and request cancellation or correction. Preserve both transaction records.
A payment was returned after the old account was emptied
Restore enough funds to cover the transaction if possible, contact the payee and old institution promptly, and ask how to resubmit or cure the payment. Do not close the account until all outstanding items are resolved.
