For a self-hosted Coolify installation, a safe update changes the Coolify control plane only. It does not update the applications, databases, services, or servers managed by Coolify. Create and export an instance backup, preserve /data/coolify/source/.env (especially its APP_KEY), review the target release notes, let deployments finish, then update during a maintenance window and verify every connection afterward.

What a Coolify update actually changes
Coolify has two operating models, and the procedure is different for each:

- Coolify Cloud: the Coolify team operates and updates the control plane. You do not run the self-hosted terminal or dashboard procedure against the hosted service.
- Self-hosted Coolify: you update the control plane on your own server. The dashboard becomes temporarily unavailable while that control plane restarts.
The documented self-hosted update is not an application rollout. It does not update your deployed applications, databases, services, or managed servers. Those resources retain their existing versions and configuration. The maintenance interruption is for the Coolify dashboard and its control-plane components, so plan administrative work around that window even though the managed workloads are not being upgraded by this operation.
Do not confuse a control-plane update with either of these separate actions:

- Updating an application image, source revision, runtime, or dependency.
- Migrating Coolify’s internal PostgreSQL database to a newer major version.
Each has its own procedure, backup requirements, and rollback implications.
Before you start: recovery preparation
1. Confirm that this is a self-hosted instance
Open the instance you administer and confirm that you have the required server or SSH access. The steps below apply to a self-hosted installation. If you use Coolify Cloud, follow the service’s managed-update notifications instead of running commands on a server.

2. Create an instance backup
Make an instance backup before changing the control plane. Treat this as your recovery point for the Coolify instance, not as a replacement for backups of the applications and databases you operate through Coolify.
For any work that involves the internal PostgreSQL database, copy the backup material to storage outside the Coolify server. An on-server dump is vulnerable to the same disk, host, or filesystem failure that could make the instance unavailable, so it should not be your only copy.
3. Preserve the source environment file and its key
Save /data/coolify/source/.env with the backup material. This file contains the instance’s APP_KEY, which is needed to recover the installation. Keep the file protected because it contains instance configuration and recovery-sensitive information. Do not delete, replace, or regenerate it casually while troubleshooting an update.

4. Read the release notes for the version you intend to install
Check the release notes before selecting an update. Look for version-specific prerequisites, known issues, breaking changes, and any instructions that alter the normal upgrade path. The currently available update is not automatically the right update for every installation; compatibility depends on the release and your environment.
5. Drain active deployments
Let deployments that are already running finish before starting the maintenance window. Starting a control-plane restart while a deployment is in progress makes it harder to determine whether a later failure came from the deployment or the update. If a deployment cannot finish, record its state and decide explicitly whether to wait, cancel it, or reschedule the update.
6. Announce the dashboard interruption
Choose a period when the Coolify dashboard can be unavailable. Keep an SSH session available if you will use terminal administration, and ensure you have a way to reach the server if the web interface is not yet back when the update completes.
Dashboard update versus terminal administration
Both approaches update the same self-hosted control plane. Select the one that matches your access and the release instructions.

An application image pull is not a substitute for a control-plane update. Pulling or redeploying an image for one of your resources changes that resource, not Coolify itself.

Safe self-hosted update procedure
- Finish preparation. Confirm the instance backup exists, copy important backup material off the server, preserve
/data/coolify/source/.env, and record theAPP_KEY-containing file in your recovery notes. - Check the release notes. Confirm the version you plan to install and any release-specific requirements. Do not begin while a deployment is still active.
- Open the update screen. In the self-hosted dashboard, go to Settings → Updates. Review the available update and start it during the maintenance window.
- Use the official terminal procedure when required. If the dashboard path is unavailable or the selected release requires terminal administration, follow the current official Coolify upgrade procedure for that release. The exact terminal commands can vary by release; do not replace them with an application image pull or an unrelated container command.
- Keep the session open. When using SSH, leave the terminal connected until the updater reports completion. Closing the session early can remove your view of progress and make an interrupted operation harder to diagnose.
- Record the upgrade log. The updater writes a timestamped log under
/data/coolify/source/. A filename can look likeupgrade-2026-07-11-12-00-00.log; the date and time in the name identify that run. Preserve the newest log with your maintenance records. - Wait for the control plane to restart. The dashboard may be unreachable during this phase. Do not interpret temporary dashboard unavailability as proof that a managed application or database was updated.
Post-update verification checklist
After the updater reports completion and the dashboard is reachable, verify the control plane in layers rather than assuming that a login page proves success.
- Dashboard availability: open the dashboard without a server or application error.
- Version: confirm that the expected Coolify version is displayed.
- Projects: open representative projects and confirm that their records are present.
- Resources: check that the expected applications, databases, and services are listed with their existing configuration.
- Local server: go to Servers → localhost and confirm that validation succeeds.
- Other managed servers: test each remote or additional managed-server connection and confirm it still connects.
- Operations: inspect the status of resources and review any events or errors before starting a new deployment.
- Evidence: retain the timestamped upgrade log alongside the backup and maintenance record.
If the dashboard opens but a server validation or resource check fails, stop before making unrelated configuration changes. The upgrade log, the exact failing server or resource, and the time of the failure provide the context needed for recovery.
If the update fails or the control plane is unusable
Preserve evidence first
Keep the newest file in /data/coolify/source/ whose name begins with upgrade-. Note when the update started, when the dashboard became unavailable, and what you observed after it returned. Avoid deleting logs or repeatedly rerunning the updater before you have identified the failure mode.
Use the known-good instance backup
If the updated control plane cannot be used, recover from the instance backup you created before the update. Ensure the recovery copy includes the preserved /data/coolify/source/.env and its original APP_KEY, and use the external copy if the server’s local storage is suspect.

Downgrading Coolify replaces the self-hosted control-plane version. It does not automatically restore the earlier database state. Therefore, repeatedly downgrading is not a substitute for restoring a compatible backup. A downgrade can be appropriate when the control-plane version is the problem, but database state and version compatibility must still be addressed with the recovery plan.

PostgreSQL: what a normal Coolify update does not do
A normal Coolify update does not migrate Coolify’s internal PostgreSQL database to a newer major version. Updating the control plane and upgrading PostgreSQL are separate maintenance operations. Do not add a PostgreSQL major migration to an ordinary update simply because a newer database image exists.
When a deliberate major-version migration is required
Treat a major migration as its own project with a larger rollback surface. Before running it:

server_version. - Choose a higher supported numeric major version as the target.
- Copy the backup outside the Coolify server and preserve
/data/coolify/source/.env, includingAPP_KEY. - Schedule dashboard downtime and keep the shell open for the entire operation.
Run the migration script
Use the supplied migration script with the target major number:
/data/coolify/source/upgrade-postgres.sh <target-major>The script stops the Coolify application container, creates a compressed pg_dumpall backup under /data/coolify/backups/internal-postgres/, creates and validates a new volume and container, writes rollback metadata, and starts the stack with the new database. Keep the shell open until the script finishes and reports its result.
Verify the migrated database and control plane
Afterward, verify the target PostgreSQL major version, then check the dashboard, projects, resources, Servers → localhost, and all other managed-server connections. A successful database container start by itself is not enough; the Coolify control plane must also read its data and validate its integrations.
Rollback the PostgreSQL migration
Rollback is available while the previous volume and rollback metadata remain available:
/data/coolify/source/upgrade-postgres.sh rollbackDo not remove the previous volume or rollback metadata until verification is complete and the retention decision has been made. This PostgreSQL rollback is distinct from downgrading the Coolify control-plane version.
Coolify CLI updates are a separate operation
The Coolify CLI is a client installed on an operating system; it is not the self-hosted Coolify control plane. Running:
coolify updatereplaces the CLI binary with the latest release for that operating system and architecture. Verify the result with:
coolify version
coolify context verifyThe CLI update leaves its configuration file and saved contexts unchanged. Updating the CLI therefore does not update the dashboard, the managed applications, the internal PostgreSQL database, or any server resources.

- Use Settings → Updates or the current official terminal procedure.
- Keep SSH open until completion when using the terminal.

- Treat PostgreSQL major migration as a separate operation with its own dump, volume, metadata, and rollback plan.
