How to Update Cisco Nexus Switches Safely and Verify the Fix

A safe Cisco Nexus update is a compatibility exercise, not a universal command sequence. First identify the exact switch PID, current NX-OS release, operating mode, topology role, and target release. Then use Cisco’s guide for that platform and the current Nexus 9000/3000 upgrade and ISSU matrix to select a Cisco-supported source-to-target path. The default process is disruptive; ISSU or ND ISSU is available only for explicitly supported hardware, releases, features, and topologies.

The practical workflow is: inventory the switch, select and plan a supported method, stage and verify the image, run release-appropriate prechecks, install while recording status, and verify both the running software and recovered network services. The commands below are documented examples for particular releases, not a universal recipe for every Nexus family.

What you must know before touching the switch

“Cisco Nexus” covers multiple hardware families and software trains. A Nexus 9300, 9500, 3000, or 3100 can have different upgrade rules, and an NX-OS-mode switch does not follow the same procedure as a device running in ACI mode. The source release matters as much as the target release: a path that is valid from one release may require an intermediate hop, a different installer, or a disruptive reload from another.

Item Why it affects the update How to document it
Exact PID and hardware family Upgrade images, ISSU eligibility, and platform caveats are model-specific. Use the device inventory and the platform’s documented show commands; record the full PID, not just “Nexus 9000.”
Current NX-OS release The supported source-to-target path and any required intermediate release depend on it. Record the complete release string, including maintenance notation.
Operating mode NX-OS mode and ACI mode use different operational guidance. Confirm the mode in the controller or switch documentation before applying an NX-OS procedure.
Topology role A standalone switch, vPC pair, fabric leaf, spine, or top-of-rack switch has different traffic and sequencing risks. List peer switches, vPC or fabric relationships, uplinks, downstream dependencies, and management reachability.
Features in use Routing, vPC, FEX, overlays, storage, multicast, telemetry, and other features can impose release restrictions. Compare enabled features with the target release’s restrictions and ISSU notes.
Configuration and recovery material A failed install or unexpected reload requires a known-good configuration and a documented recovery route. Save a verified configuration backup and record console or out-of-band access.
Storage and transfer path The image must fit on the intended filesystem and arrive intact. Record the image filename, filesystem, available space, file-server path, and transfer method.

Take a small health snapshot at the same time. Note which interfaces should be up, which routing and switching adjacencies should be established, which vPC or fabric peers are healthy, and which application paths are expected to work. This becomes the post-change comparison rather than relying on a switch prompt that merely reports a successful install.

Choose the supported source-to-target path

Use the current Cisco guide for the exact switch family and target release, together with the Nexus 9000/3000 Upgrade and ISSU Matrix where it applies. The matrix is intended to identify Cisco-validated paths, methods, and caveats from a stated current release to a stated target release. Confirm the exact PID, not only the product family, and check whether an intermediate release is required.

The current Cisco Nexus 9000 Release 10.6(x) guide was updated August 23, 2026. Cisco publishes separate guidance for Nexus 3000 families and other Nexus platforms, so a 10.6(x) 9000 procedure should not be transplanted to a 3000 or 3100. The matrix page identified in the documentation search shows an update date of December 18, 2023; check its live entries immediately before an operational change because support combinations can change.

Compare the possible methods

Method When it is appropriate Traffic and reload expectation Planning constraint
ISSU Only when the exact hardware, source release, target release, feature set, and topology are listed as supported. Designed to reduce disruption, but the matrix and release guide determine the actual behavior; it is not a blanket zero-downtime promise. Follow the guide’s feature restrictions, sequencing, and health requirements exactly.
ND ISSU Only for combinations explicitly identified by Cisco. The cited matrix says ND ISSU is supported for Nexus 9300 top-of-rack switches in the applicable combinations. Impact is combination-specific and must be confirmed in the matrix and impact analysis. Do not infer eligibility for every Nexus 9300, every topology, or every release.
Disruptive, standard, or cold installation Required when ISSU is unsupported, restricted by a feature, or not selected for the change. Plan for a reload and traffic interruption unless the platform guide explicitly states otherwise. Schedule a maintenance window, coordinate dependent systems, and test out-of-band access.

Do not choose a target merely because it is the newest number you can find. The supported path, hardware compatibility, feature caveats, and recovery instructions are more important than recency.

Plan the maintenance window and rollback posture

Once the matrix identifies a supported method, translate its impact into an operational plan. Treat the default upgrade process as disruptive unless the applicable guide and matrix explicitly establish an ISSU method for your exact combination.

Before the window

  • Define a start time, an observation period after the install, and a stop condition if health checks fail.
  • Notify owners of links, routing peers, storage paths, load balancers, and applications that depend on the switch.
  • Confirm console or out-of-band management access. In-band access can disappear during a reload or control-plane transition.
  • Save and verify the running configuration, and retain a copy outside the switch.
  • Write down the expected interface, adjacency, vPC, fabric, and application-health baseline.
  • Document the approved recovery path for this source release and platform. Do not assume that a downgrade is simply the reverse of an upgrade.

Decide what “success” means

Success has two independent parts. The first is software state: the switch boots the intended release and reports no installation failure. The second is service recovery: expected ports, peers, adjacencies, forwarding paths, and applications are healthy. A version prompt alone does not prove that traffic is flowing correctly.

Stage the image and verify its integrity

Obtain the image through Cisco’s software distribution channel for the exact PID and release. Confirm that the switch can reach the file server, that the destination filesystem has enough free space, and that the filename matches the release guide. Keep the original file until the change is closed and the recovery decision is no longer needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the checksum method required by your release

Cisco’s Nexus 9000 Release 9.3(x) guidance describes checking an image’s MD5 value on the switch and comparing it with the value published for that image in Cisco Software Download. The documented example is:

show file bootflash:<IMAGE-NAME> md5sum

Replace the filename with the exact image you staged, record the returned hash, and compare it character-for-character with Cisco’s published value for that image. This is a release-specific example. Other platforms or later guides may require a different verification method or checksum algorithm, so use the applicable current guide rather than assuming MD5 is universal.

Check practical staging conditions

  • Verify the transfer completed without truncation and that the file is on the intended filesystem.
  • Check free space and remove only files that the platform guide identifies as safe to remove.
  • Keep a second copy of the image in the approved repository in case the install must be repeated.
  • Do not start the install while a transfer is still running or while management reachability is unstable.

Run release-appropriate prechecks

Prechecks are not interchangeable across Nexus families. Use the commands named in your platform and release guide, and preserve their output in the change record.

Compatibility and impact examples

The Nexus 3000 Release 9.3(x) guide lists these examples:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
show incompatibility system
show logging level
show install all impact

show incompatibility system identifies software or feature incompatibilities that must be addressed before installation. show logging level helps reveal logging conditions that the guide says may need attention. show install all impact explains whether the proposed upgrade is disruptive and whether a reboot is required. The impact result is a planning input, not permission to ignore an unsupported path.

Interpret an unfavorable precheck

  • If the incompatibility report identifies a feature or module restriction, stop and resolve it according to the release guide before proceeding.
  • If the impact analysis says a reboot is required, revise the maintenance window and communications; do not describe the change as hitless.
  • If logs show an unresolved fault, stabilize the switch first. Installing over an existing hardware, storage, or control-plane problem makes diagnosis harder.
  • If the command names or output differ on your platform, use the equivalent checks documented for that family rather than forcing Nexus 3000 syntax onto another model.

Start the installation exactly as documented

Follow the interactive installation workflow in the guide for the selected platform and release. The current Nexus 9000 Release 10.6(x) documentation describes standard and enhanced ISSU processes; which process applies is determined by the matrix and the guide’s prerequisites, not by a generic preference for ISSU.

Do not bypass the safety prompts

Read the compatibility and impact results presented by the installer. Do not use an option that skips checks merely to automate a prompt or shorten the maintenance. Automation is appropriate only after the supported workflow has been validated and the required checks remain enforced.

Record progress and failure information

Where the platform supports them, monitor the installation with:

show install all status
show install all failure-reason

The Nexus 3000 guidance documents these commands for checking progress and identifying a reported failure reason. Exact syntax and availability vary by release. Save the output before clearing anything, and note the time of each major phase, reload, and peer recovery.

Verify the software state after reboot or ISSU

After the installer reports completion, verify the running release with the command documented for your platform. Cisco’s Nexus 9000 Release 7.x procedure uses show version to verify the required version. Cisco guidance for covered Nexus 3000/3100 cases also uses a documented show module check. Use the command that your release guide specifies and confirm the complete target release, not only a shortened major-version label.

Software verification checklist

  • The reported release exactly matches the approved target.
  • All expected modules or supervisors are present and operational.
  • The install status shows completion rather than a pending or partially completed phase.
  • No failure reason is recorded for the install.
  • Boot variables or startup settings point to the intended software according to the platform guide.
  • Management access is stable through the approved path.

If the version is unchanged, do not repeatedly retry the install. Preserve the status and failure output, confirm which image actually booted, and follow the platform’s documented diagnosis and recovery process.

Verify network services separately from the version

A switch can boot the correct NX-OS release while a peer, interface, route, or application remains unhealthy. Compare the post-change state with the baseline captured before the window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Layered service checks

  1. Hardware and interfaces: Confirm expected line cards, supervisors, ports, port channels, and optics are present and operational. Investigate unexpected down, err-disabled, suspended, or flapping states.
  2. Control-plane relationships: Confirm vPC or fabric peer health, routing adjacencies, spanning-tree relationships, FEX associations, and other control-plane sessions used by the topology.
  3. Forwarding behavior: Check that expected VLANs, routes, next hops, and overlay or multicast state have returned. Compare counts and key entries with the pre-change baseline.
  4. Traffic paths: Test representative east-west and north-south flows, including any storage or management paths that the switch carries.
  5. Applications: Ask service owners to verify reachability and transaction behavior from the systems that depend on the switch. A successful ping alone is not an application test.
  6. Stability period: Watch logs and counters for the agreed observation period. A peer that comes up briefly and then flaps is not a successful recovery.

Keep software verification and service verification as separate checkboxes in the change record. This distinction makes it clear whether a problem is an image/install issue or a feature, topology, or neighbor-recovery issue.

Troubleshoot by symptom, not by guesswork

The image will not stage or the checksum differs

Stop the installation. Recheck the PID, release filename, transfer completion, filesystem, and the checksum value published for that exact image. A mismatch can indicate a damaged transfer, the wrong image, or a comparison against a value for a different release. Restage a verified file through the approved channel; do not proceed on an unexplained mismatch.

Compatibility or impact checks reject the change

Capture the output and compare it with the release guide’s restrictions. Correct the named feature, module, configuration, or prerequisite, or select a different Cisco-supported path. Do not suppress the check simply because the target release is operationally desirable.

The install reports a failure

Preserve show install all status, show install all failure-reason, relevant logs, and the exact source and target releases. Avoid an improvised second install or downgrade. Follow the platform guide’s recovery sequence; if the issue requires vendor assistance, Cisco’s Nexus 3000 guidance identifies show tech-support as information that can be provided to Cisco Technical Assistance Center.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The switch boots but links or adjacencies do not recover

First confirm the software version and module state. Then compare interface, peer, routing, and forwarding state with the baseline. Check for a feature restriction, a neighbor that did not reload in the expected order, a suspended port channel, or a control-plane session that remains down. Keep the approved recovery deadline in view and escalate with preserved evidence rather than changing multiple variables at once.

Traffic impact is greater than planned

Record the actual interruption and stop further troubleshooting that could obscure the event. If the matrix or impact analysis did not promise uninterrupted traffic, treat the interruption as a planning or dependency issue rather than proof of an installer defect. If an explicitly supported ISSU combination caused unexpected disruption, preserve the timeline, status, logs, and topology details for diagnosis.

Close the change only when the evidence is complete

A defensible closure record includes the exact PID, source and target releases, selected method, matrix or guide reference used, image filename and verification result, precheck output, install status, reboot or ISSU timeline, post-change version check, and service-validation results. Note any observed traffic interruption and the time at which each dependency recovered.

If checks fail, leave the change open, retain the evidence, and follow the exact platform guide or Cisco support process. The documented recovery path may differ by release and hardware. Do not invent downgrade steps or assume that a failed upgrade can be reversed by selecting the previous image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reusable decision sequence

  1. Identify the exact Nexus PID, current NX-OS release, operating mode, topology, and enabled features.
  2. Use the current family guide and applicable upgrade/ISSU matrix to validate the source-to-target path and any intermediate releases.
  3. Classify the method as supported ISSU, supported ND ISSU, or disruptive installation, and plan traffic impact accordingly.
  4. Back up configuration, confirm recovery access, communicate the window, and capture a service baseline.
  5. Stage the image, verify storage and transfer integrity, and apply the checksum procedure required by that release.
  6. Run the guide’s compatibility, logging, impact, and feature checks; stop on an unresolved restriction.
  7. Execute the documented installation without bypassing safety checks, while retaining status and failure output.
  8. Verify the target software and module state after completion.
  9. Validate interfaces, peers, adjacencies, forwarding, traffic, and applications against the baseline.
  10. Close the change only when both software state and service health are proven; otherwise preserve evidence and escalate through the documented recovery path.
