Install browser updates as soon as they are offered, then complete the required relaunch, restart, or app-store installation. On a computer, Chrome checks from Help > About Google Chrome; Edge checks at edge://settings/help; Firefox uses Mozilla’s platform-specific update instructions; and Safari arrives through Apple’s software-update system. The exact version available depends on your device, operating system, and whether an administrator manages the browser.
Why browser updates matter for security
A browser update can include fixes for vulnerabilities in the browser engine, JavaScript runtime, networking code, media components, password handling, and the operating-system integration around them. Those fixes only protect you after the updated code is installed and running. A download that is waiting for a restart is not the same as a completed update.

- Desktop Edge: choose Restart when prompted after the update downloads.
- Firefox: follow the update path for your operating system and restart if Firefox asks.
- Safari: install the relevant Apple operating-system update; Safari is delivered through that system rather than a separate universal updater.
- Android and iPhone/iPad browsers: install the pending update from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
Do not assume one version number applies to every platform. Vendors publish different builds for desktop, mobile, and supported operating-system releases.

If a work or school administrator controls the browser, the normal controls may be disabled or hidden. In that case, the administrator’s update schedule and policy determine what you can install.
Update Google Chrome on a computer
Use Chrome’s About page
- Open Chrome on the computer you want to update.
- Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Help, then About Google Chrome.
- Leave the About page open while Chrome checks for an available update. If a download starts, let it finish.
- When the button says Relaunch, select it. Chrome closes and reopens with the update applied.
If no Relaunch button appears, Chrome either already has the latest build available for your operating system or has not found an update yet. Close every Chrome window and open the browser again so a background download can be applied. Save form entries and other unsaved work first; reopening the browser can close tabs or interrupt active sessions.
Check that Chrome is running the new build
Return to Help > About Google Chrome. The page displays the installed version and reports whether Chrome is up to date. If the page continues to show a pending Relaunch, select it rather than merely closing one tab. If an update cannot install, check that the computer’s operating system still meets Chrome’s current requirements; an unsupported system may stop receiving the newest browser build.
Update Chrome on Android
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your account or profile icon, then open Manage apps & device and the available-updates list.
- Find Chrome and tap Update. If you want all offered app updates, use the store’s update-all control instead.
- Wait for the installation to complete, then open Chrome from the store or your home screen.
Play Store settings can prevent automatic app updates, so a manual check is useful when Chrome appears to be waiting for a newer release. If Chrome is absent from the available-updates list, the store has not offered an update to that device at that time, or the installation is already current.
Update Chrome on iPhone or iPad
- Open the Apple App Store.
- Tap your account picture or initials to open the account page.
- Review the available updates and locate Chrome.
- Tap Update next to Chrome, then wait for the progress indicator to finish.
- Open Chrome after installation. If iOS or iPadOS asks to restart during a system update, complete that restart as well.
App Store settings control automatic app updates. A pending Chrome update may therefore require this account-page check even when the app has been used recently.

Update Microsoft Edge
Check from Edge itself
- Open Edge.
- Choose Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
- Select Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge.
- Alternatively, type
edge://settings/helpin the address bar and press Enter. - Allow Edge to check for, download, and install the offered update.
- Select Restart when it appears. The update can be downloaded already but remain inactive until this restart.
Edge normally updates when it is restarted. Reopening it after saving work is therefore part of the update process, not an optional cleanup step.
Use Windows Update or Microsoft’s installer when Edge cannot update
On Windows, open Settings > Windows Update and choose Check for updates. Install the offered Windows and Edge-related updates, then restart Windows if requested. Microsoft also documents an official Edge installer for cases where the in-browser check or Windows Update does not complete. Use the installer intended for your Windows edition and architecture, and close Edge when the installer asks.
Do not repeatedly delete browser files or turn off security software as a first response. An update failure is more often caused by connectivity, permissions, a pending Windows restart, or an administrator policy.
Edge cases that require manual action
- Metered connections: Edge may defer update downloads when Windows marks the connection as metered. Connect to an unmetered network, or follow your organization’s approved method for allowing the download.
- Devices purchased in China: Microsoft identifies certain devices in China as situations in which manual updating may be necessary.
- Managed browsers: If update toggles are missing or disabled, an organization may be enforcing the setting. Contact the IT administrator rather than trying to override the policy.
Update Mozilla Firefox
Use the instructions for your operating system
Firefox’s update controls differ by platform. Open Mozilla’s official Installation and updates support hub and select the instructions for your device and operating system. The hub provides separate procedures for Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile, along with release information.
- Open the Mozilla support hub in Firefox or another browser.
- Choose the page for your operating system and edition.
- Follow the documented update check or download procedure.
- Install the update and restart Firefox if the installer or browser requests it.
- Open Firefox’s About or update page again to confirm that the installed build changed and that no update is waiting.
This platform-specific route matters because package managers, operating-system permissions, and mobile stores handle Firefox differently. A Linux distribution may provide Firefox through its own package updates, while a Windows or Mac installation may use Mozilla’s updater.

Older macOS versions and Firefox 115 ESR
Mozilla states that Firefox 115 is the last supported version for macOS 10.12 (Sierra), macOS 10.13 (High Sierra), and macOS 10.14 (Mojave). Mozilla says Firefox 115 Extended Support Release (ESR) security updates are planned until March 2027, with that horizon subject to reevaluation. This is a support qualification, not a promise that every newer Firefox feature will run on those systems.
If your Mac is on one of those releases, check Mozilla’s current support notice before assuming that a standard latest-release number should be available. Upgrading macOS, when the hardware and Apple’s support policy allow it, can restore access to newer browser versions.
Update Apple Safari
Mac
Safari is updated through macOS software updates. Open the Mac’s system settings, go to the software-update area, and install the available macOS update that includes Safari components. Finish any required restart before using Safari for sensitive tasks.
Apple’s Safari support hub provides device-specific instructions. Apple’s security-release list records Safari releases and the macOS versions they support, so the newest Safari number for one Mac may not be offered on another Mac running an older supported system.
iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro
On Apple mobile and headset platforms, Safari is part of the operating system. Open the device’s Settings, choose General, then Software Update. Install the offered system update and keep the device connected to power when practical. After the update and restart, Safari uses the updated system components.

There is no separate Safari app-store update that bypasses the operating-system version. If no update is offered, the device may already be current for its hardware and support window, or Apple may not provide a newer release for that model.
How to confirm that a security update is active
- Use the browser’s own About page: Chrome and Edge show their installed version and update state in their respective About screens. Follow Firefox’s platform instructions to verify its installed release.
- Complete the final action: Select Relaunch or Restart, close and reopen the browser, or finish the app-store installation. A downloaded package that is waiting for this action is not yet the running browser.
- Check the mobile store: On Android and iPhone/iPad, the store should show an Open button or an installed state after the update completes.
- Check Apple’s release record: For Safari, compare your device’s supported operating-system release with Apple’s security-release information. Use the platform and date shown there rather than comparing Safari’s number with a different device.
Record the browser name, installed version, operating system, and date if you are troubleshooting several devices. That information lets an administrator or support technician distinguish an old browser from an old operating system or a policy-controlled installation.

1. Finish a pending restart
Look for Relaunch, Restart, or a system-restart notice. Save documents and close the browser completely, then reopen it. A second check from the About page can confirm whether the pending state cleared.
2. Check the connection and power conditions
Use a stable connection and, on a laptop or phone, connect to power if the update is large. A metered Windows connection can delay Edge downloads. Do not assume that a failed check means the browser has no update; the updater may have been unable to reach its service.

3. Install through the supported alternate route
- For Edge on Windows, try Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates or Microsoft’s official installer.
- For Chrome, use the About page on desktop or the relevant app store on mobile.
- For Firefox, return to Mozilla’s operating-system-specific installation and updates page.
- For Safari, use the device’s Apple software-update settings.
4. Check operating-system support
An old operating system can limit the newest browser build. Chrome’s About page directs users to verify that system requirements are met. Firefox has the documented 115 ESR path for macOS 10.12 through 10.14. Safari availability follows Apple’s supported macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS releases. If the operating system is outside the vendor’s supported range, updating the browser alone may not be possible.
5. Look for organization management
Work, school, and shared computers can enforce browser versions, disable automatic updates, or hide update controls. If settings are locked or a message says the browser is managed, ask the organization’s IT administrator for its approved update procedure. Do not install an unrelated copy that could conflict with the managed configuration.
6. Treat endpoint errors as an administrator issue
Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance identifies update connectivity and required update/download endpoints as possible causes. On a managed network, an administrator may need to permit those endpoints through a proxy or firewall. Give IT the exact error, device operating system, Edge version, and time of the failed check. Avoid disabling security protection as a routine workaround.
Automatic updates: what they do and do not guarantee
Automatic updating reduces the number of manual checks, but it does not guarantee that the newest code is running immediately. Chrome commonly downloads in the background and applies the update when the browser is closed and reopened. Edge can download an update and wait for Restart. Mobile browsers depend on Google Play or the App Store settings, and Safari depends on Apple’s operating-system update process.

A practical maintenance routine for all your browsers
- List what you actually use: include desktop browsers, mobile browsers, and any browser embedded in a work profile or managed device.
- Enable the vendor’s normal automatic-update setting: use the browser, app-store, or operating-system control rather than a third-party updater.
- Respond to restart prompts: schedule the relaunch when you can save work, instead of leaving a downloaded security fix inactive for days.
- Check manually after a long gap: open Chrome’s About page, Edge’s About page, Mozilla’s platform instructions, or Apple’s software-update screen.
- Keep the operating system supported: browser support often follows the platform’s security and compatibility limits.
- Escalate managed-device problems: provide IT with the version and error details instead of changing protected settings yourself.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping after the download: select Relaunch or Restart so the patched code becomes active.
- Comparing version numbers across platforms: a Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari number may differ legitimately between Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and other supported systems.
- Installing a random updater: use the browser’s built-in control, the official operating-system updater, or the official app store.
- Ignoring an unsupported operating system: an old platform can cap the browser version or leave only an extended-support branch available.
- Overriding organizational policy: a managed browser may be intentionally held at a tested version; ask the administrator before changing it.
- Disabling security controls to force an update: investigate connectivity, permissions, pending restarts, and required endpoints first.

- For a failed Edge update, provide IT with connectivity, endpoint, policy, and version details rather than disabling protection.
Following the vendor’s own update path and completing the final restart is the reliable way to put browser security fixes into operation. The correct menu differs by browser and device, but the principle is the same: install the supported build, activate it, and verify that the browser reports a current state.
