If service remains unavailable, check that your AT&T line is on before moving on to carrier support or a network-settings reset.
What “SOS,” “No Service” and “Searching” mean
These status messages mean the iPhone is not connected to its cellular network. “SOS” is not normal AT&T service; in supported regions, it may allow emergency calls through other carriers.

The cause may be a phone setting, carrier-settings update, inactive or incorrectly configured SIM/eSIM, an account or network issue, or a hardware fault. The steps below start with actions you can take on the iPhone and move to carrier or device support only if needed. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance notes that cellular service must be available in your location for reconnection steps to work.

- Open Settings and turn on Airplane Mode.
- Leave it on for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- If the iPhone still does not reconnect, restart it.
These steps prompt the phone to retry its cellular connection; they cannot restore service during an outage or activate an inactive line.

Check for an AT&T carrier-settings update
Carrier settings configure how the iPhone connects to a carrier. Apple says updates can improve connectivity and performance and may add features such as 5G or Wi-Fi Calling.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi if possible.
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Wait for a carrier-settings prompt. If one appears, follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
An available update installs in less than a minute, according to Apple. If a required update has already been installed, the prompt may offer OK rather than Update. To see the installed version, look next to Carrier; the displayed label may vary by software version or language. A new SIM or eSIM may also require carrier settings. Apple’s manual carrier-settings update instructions explain the prompt and version check.
Make sure the AT&T line and SIM or eSIM are active
Check the line on a Dual SIM iPhone
Go to Settings > Cellular, tap the AT&T line, and make sure Turn On This Line is enabled. If the line is missing, contact AT&T about eSIM setup or insert the intended physical SIM.

Check SIM or eSIM activation
An eSIM must be associated with an active plan and downloaded or transferred using AT&T’s activation process. A physical SIM change may also require carrier-side account steps. For AT&T-specific instructions, use its device activation support and SIM and eSIM transfer guidance.
If you use a physical SIM, remove and reinsert it only if appropriate for your model and situation. If it is damaged or does not fit correctly, ask AT&T about a replacement rather than trying a generic SIM.
Do not guess APN settings
An access point name (APN) specifies the network path used for cellular data. Some carriers require APN settings, but whether you can view or edit them depends on the carrier. Incorrect values can disrupt data service and may cause additional charges.

If cellular data still fails, or APN controls are unavailable, ask AT&T for the correct settings instead of copying values from another carrier, phone or forum. Apple’s APN guidance explains when these settings can be changed and why carrier instructions matter.

If the iPhone has not reconnected, contact AT&T and ask it to check the parts of service that cannot be fixed from the phone alone:
- Whether the account is active and in good standing.
- Whether service is available at your location or a local outage is affecting it.
- Whether the device or line is blocked or barred, and whether the line has the correct plan and provisioning.
- Whether the SIM or eSIM is activated correctly after a setup or device change.
Only the carrier can access and manage account details. AT&T provides wireless customer support and account-based troubleshooting for these checks.

If the issue happens while roaming
For a problem outside AT&T’s home network, check Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming for the relevant line. Whether roaming is available and what it costs depend on your AT&T plan, so confirm the terms with AT&T before enabling it.
Use Reset Network Settings only after simpler checks
A network reset is a later troubleshooting step because it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN and APN settings. You will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and may need to restore relevant managed or carrier configuration.

- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings and confirm.
Apple describes the effects of network-setting changes in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
When to contact Apple for service
If AT&T confirms there is no account, activation or network issue and the iPhone still cannot connect, a device problem may need service. Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics on iPhone models running iOS 18 or later. If hardware is suspected, follow Apple’s device-service guidance.
