To update most Samsung Galaxy Tab models, connect to the internet, then open Settings > Software update > Download and install. Follow the prompts if an update is offered. Some models or carriers use a System updates menu or different check button, and Samsung says available screens and settings can vary by provider, software version and model.
How do I update my Samsung Galaxy Tab?
- Connect the tablet to a network and open Settings.
- Tap Software update. If that option is not shown, look for System updates.
- Tap Download and install, Check for system updates, or the equivalent option on your tablet.
- If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions. The tablet may ask you to confirm the download or installation.
- Leave the tablet to finish. It may restart, and it may be unavailable while installation is in progress.
Samsung describes software updates as a way to improve the interface, enhance security and remove minor bugs. Those are Samsung’s stated aims, not a guarantee that a specific update will produce a particular result on every tablet. Can I update a Galaxy Tab using a computer?
Yes, Samsung documents an optional computer route using Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac. A computer is not required for a routine update check from the tablet itself.

- Install or open Smart Switch on the computer.
- Connect the Galaxy Tab to the computer with the included USB cable. Some computers may require a USB adapter.
- If Smart Switch offers an update, select Update and follow the prompts.
Do not disconnect the cable or use the tablet while Smart Switch is installing an update. If you need a replacement cable, first confirm that its connector fits your specific tablet and that it supports data transfer; the cable included with the device may already be suitable.

How can I check which software is installed?
Open Settings > About tablet > Software information to inspect the installed software details. Menu names can vary; Samsung’s general guidance refers to the device-information page as About phone or About tablet.
Why is my Galaxy Tab not showing a software update?
An empty update check does not by itself establish that a tablet is unsupported. Availability and timing depend on the exact model and software, and can also vary by carrier and region. Samsung does not provide a universal rollout schedule for every Galaxy Tab variant. What should I do if an update fails or gets interrupted?
- Network interruption: Samsung says an interruption before an update completes may cause it to fail. Reconnect to the network and try again.
- Computer update interrupted: If the tablet or computer loses connection during installation, Samsung warns the tablet may not operate normally. Do not disconnect the cable while Smart Switch is updating; for a failed or interrupted installation, contact Samsung Support or your carrier for model-specific help.
- Considering a factory reset: Do not start with a reset. If Samsung Support or your carrier recommends one as a recovery step, make backup copies of important data first. Samsung warns that a factory data reset deletes data and says it is not responsible for data loss.
