You can also enable automatic downloads and installation while the console is in Rest Mode.
Check and install a PS5 game update manually
A manual check is the quickest way to find out whether a particular game has a newer build available. You do not need a USB drive or a separate updater for an individual game; the console checks through its internet connection.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Open the PS5 Games home screen and highlight the game tile you want to update.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Select Check for Update.
- If the console reports an update, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.
If no update is offered, the console has not found a newer package for that title at that time. The menu does not provide a reason when no newer build is found, so a no-update result should not be treated as a substitute for reading the installed version number.

Starting a game can also trigger updating
PlayStation Support says, “When you start a game or app, it automatically updates to the newest version available.” That behavior is useful when you simply want to play, but the manual route is better when you want to check before launching or when you are diagnosing a problem. Starting a game is not a substitute for checking the console’s own system software, which is managed separately.

What happens after you approve an update
The PS5 displays its own download and installation prompts. Keep the console connected to the internet and leave it powered on while the process runs unless the on-screen instructions say otherwise. There is no universal download size or completion time for every game, so do not rely on a fixed estimate. If you need to know whether the update actually changed the installed build, return to the game tile afterward and check Options → Information again when that title exposes a version field.
When to use a manual check
Run the manual check when a publisher has announced a patch, when a feature is missing, when an online service says your client is out of date, or when you want to verify one title without changing your general automatic-update settings. It is also the clearest first step after a failed download: check the connection, retry the command, and note any error shown by the console.
View the game version installed on your PS5
The version number identifies the game build currently installed on the console. It is different from the PS5’s system-software version.
- Highlight the game tile on the PS5 home screen.
- Press Options.
- Choose Information.
- Scroll down to Version number.
Santa Monica Studio describes this value for God of War Ragnarök as “the game version currently installed on your console.” The instructions are title-specific evidence, not a guarantee that every PS5 game uses exactly the same label or exposes the field in the same place. If you are checking another game and cannot find the entry, use that publisher’s support documentation or inspect the game’s own information screens rather than assuming the build is out of date.
Record the number when reporting a problem
Write down the complete version string exactly as shown, including punctuation and any letters. Support staff can use it to distinguish an installation issue from a problem affecting a particular release. Also note whether the game was started from the internal storage or an attached storage device, because that detail can help you describe the installation that produced the number.
Version numbers are title-specific
A version such as 1.XX or another publisher-defined string has meaning only in the context of that game. Do not compare the number with another title, and do not assume that a higher-looking number always identifies a newer release across different games. The useful comparison is between the number shown for your installation and the number named in that game’s official patch notes or support instructions.
Enable automatic updates in Rest Mode
Automatic updating is useful when you want patches to be ready without manually opening each game. The PS5 must be allowed to connect to the internet while it is in Rest Mode.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Open Automatic Updates.
- Enable Auto-Download and, if you want the console to apply updates without waiting for you, enable Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
These controls affect games and apps while the console is resting. They do not change the manual Check for Update command, and they do not update the console’s system software through the game menu.
Auto-Download versus Auto-Install
| Setting | What it does | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-Download | Allows an available game or app update to download while the PS5 is in Rest Mode. | Use it when you want files ready but prefer to decide when installation occurs. |
| Auto-Install in Rest Mode | Allows the console to install downloaded game or app updates during Rest Mode. | Use it when you want updates applied without resuming the game yourself. |
PlayStation notes an important suspended-game distinction: Auto-Download can be enabled on its own, while installation can be chosen when the suspended game is resumed. If you leave a game open and suspended, selecting only Auto-Download avoids installing an update during that session; you can handle installation after returning to the game.
Rest Mode prerequisites
- The console needs an internet connection available in Rest Mode.
- The automatic-update controls must be enabled under the path above.
- Automatic behavior is not a promise that every title will update immediately; a manual check remains the direct way to request a check for one game.
Choosing settings for a suspended game
If you regularly leave a game suspended, decide whether convenience or control matters more. Auto-Download alone prepares the files without requiring installation during the suspended session. Enabling Auto-Install as well gives the console permission to apply downloaded updates in Rest Mode. You can change these choices later in the same Automatic Updates screen; they are not permanent decisions for a particular game.
Choose the right update method
| Approach | User control | Internet requirement | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual Check for Update | You decide when to check and approve the displayed prompt. | Internet access when you run the check. | Confirming a patch before play, checking one title, or troubleshooting. |
| Auto-Download in Rest Mode | Downloads happen automatically; installation can wait until the game is resumed. | Internet access while the PS5 is in Rest Mode. | Preparing files while preserving control over an open, suspended game. |
| Auto-Download plus Auto-Install in Rest Mode | The console can download and install without a manual approval each time. | Internet access while the PS5 is in Rest Mode. | Keeping games current with the least routine intervention. |
There is no need to select one method permanently. You can use automatic updates for everyday maintenance and still run a manual check before an important play session or after hearing that a patch has been released.
Manual checking offers the most visible feedback because you initiate the request and see the result immediately. Rest Mode automation is more convenient but depends on the console being online in Rest Mode and on the settings being enabled. For a suspended game, Auto-Download alone is the middle option: the files can be obtained automatically while installation remains a later choice.
Do not confuse a game version with PS5 system software
A game’s version number belongs to that individual title. The console’s system-software version applies to the PS5 itself. Updating one does not prove that the other is current.
Check the console system-software version
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open Console Information.
The system-software version appears there. PlayStation says that Up to date is shown when the latest system software is installed. This is the screen to use when an error message or support article asks for the PS5 firmware version; the game’s Information panel is not a substitute.

Which screen should you use?
| You need to know | Menu route | Value to read |
|---|---|---|
| The installed build of a game | Highlight game tile → Options → Information | Version number, when that title exposes it |
| The PS5 firmware state | Settings → System → System Software → Console Information | System-software version and the Up to date status |
If a game update appears unavailable but the console itself is not current, update the PS5 system software through the system-software controls before judging the game update. The two values answer different support questions and should be reported separately.
Troubleshoot a game update that will not install
When an update fails, work through the checks in order. Each step tests a different part of the process, so you can stop once the update completes.
1. Test the internet connection
- Open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Choose Test Internet Connection.
If the test reports a problem, resolve the connection issue and then return to the game tile to run Options → Check for Update again. A failed connection test does not identify every possible cause, but it tells you not to treat the game’s update menu as the first problem to fix.
2. Restart the PS5
Restart the console, wait for the home screen to return, and repeat the manual check. This clears a temporary console state without deleting the game or its saved data. If the download was interrupted, the restart also gives you a clean point from which to observe the next prompt.
3. Confirm that system software is current
Use Settings → System → System Software → Console Information and look for the current version and Up to date status. PlayStation includes current console software among its update-failure recommendations. Do not report the game’s version number when support is asking for this console-level information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Reinstall the affected game
If the connection and console software are in order but the same title still will not update, PlayStation lists deleting and reinstalling the game as a further step. Reinstallation replaces the game installation; it is more disruptive than restarting, so use it after the less-invasive checks. Ensure you know which copy you are reinstalling and allow the download to finish before judging whether the update succeeded.
5. Use Safe Mode to clear cache and rebuild the database
PlayStation also recommends Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option for update problems that persist. Safe Mode is a recovery environment rather than the normal home screen. Follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode instructions carefully, select the named option, and do not interrupt the console while it performs the operation. If the update still fails afterward, escalate to PlayStation Support with the game version, system-software version, connection-test result, and the exact error shown.

A practical escalation order
- Run Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection.
- Restart the PS5.
- Check system software and confirm the Up to date status.
- Try Check for Update again.
- Reinstall the game if the failure continues.
- Use Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option.
- Contact PlayStation Support if none of these steps resolves the issue.
What to collect before contacting support
Have the exact game title, the complete game version string if visible, the PS5 system-software version, the result of Test Internet Connection, and the exact error wording ready. These details keep the report focused on the affected installation and help support distinguish a game-build problem from a console-software or connection problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the Version number field is missing
Do not assume that a missing field proves the game is unpatched. The documented Options → Information → Version number route comes from Santa Monica Studio’s support instructions for God of War Ragnarök. The available guidance does not establish that every game, region, or PS5 system-software release presents the same field or wording.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor another title, first run Check for Update. Then look for a version or build entry in the game’s information screen, main menu, or publisher support instructions. Record the exact label you see rather than translating it into a universal menu name. If the publisher documents a different route, use that route for the title in question.
Why the publisher’s instructions matter
Publishers can expose build information inside their own menus even when the PS5 information panel does not show a field. A title-specific support page may also explain whether a displayed number refers to the installed game, downloadable content, or another component. Use the official instructions for that game when the generic PS5 route does not match what appears on screen.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Checking the wrong tile: Highlight the installed game you intend to play, not a similarly named trial, streaming entry, or duplicate tile.
- Opening the wrong Options menu: Press the controller’s Options button while the game tile is highlighted; the in-game pause menu is a different screen.
- Treating “no update” as a version number: The result of Check for Update does not replace the installed build shown under Information when that field is available.
- Leaving a suspended game open and expecting installation: With Auto-Download enabled alone, PlayStation says installation can wait until the game is resumed.
- Reading the firmware screen as the game build: Console Information reports PS5 system software, not the version of an individual game.
- Using a USB-drive system-update guide for a game patch: PlayStation’s USB guidance concerns manual console system-software updates, not updating an individual game, so it is not the appropriate method here.
- Assuming every title has the same information label: The version-number route is documented for God of War Ragnarök; another game may use different wording or omit the field.
- Skipping the connection test: Reinstalling before checking the network makes a disruptive step your first move when a basic connection check may identify the issue.
A quick pre-play checklist
- Highlight the correct game tile.
- Run Options → Check for Update if you need an immediate confirmation.
- Open Options → Information and record Version number when the title provides it.
- If relying on Rest Mode, confirm internet access in Rest Mode and review Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Automatic Updates.
- If an update fails, test the connection before reinstalling the game or entering Safe Mode.
- When contacting support, provide the game version, console system-software version, and the exact error text.

What should I do if a PS5 game update fails?
Test the connection at Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection, restart the console, confirm system software is current, and try again. If it still fails, PlayStation lists reinstalling the game and using Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option as further steps.
Can I use a USB drive to update a PS5 game?
The USB-drive instructions for manual system-software updates apply to the PS5 console, not to updating an individual game. Use the game tile’s Check for Update command or the Rest Mode update settings instead.
The Bottom Line
For a deliberate check, highlight the game, press Options, and choose Check for Update. To inspect the installed build, choose Information and look for Version number when that title exposes it. Enable internet access in Rest Mode and configure Automatic Updates for hands-off downloads or installation. Keep the game version separate from the PS5 system-software version, and troubleshoot in PlayStation’s order—connection test, restart, system-software check, reinstall, then Safe Mode—before contacting support.
