Sony adds controller device-software updates when PS5 system software is updated, and you can also update from a Windows PC with the PlayStation Accessories application. To check charge, press the PS button, choose Accessories in Control Centre, and read the battery icon.
How DualSense controller updates work
A DualSense update is a controller device-software update, not a game patch or a separate application update delivered through the PlayStation Store. Sony describes these updates as being added when you update the PS5 console system software. In normal use, keep the console’s system software current and accept any controller update prompt that appears after the controller is connected or paired.

You can still check manually when you want to confirm the controller is current. The same manual check is useful if an update notification was dismissed or if you connected a controller after the console software update had already finished.

Sony does not present a separate “controller update” download for every game. If the PS5 reports that a controller update is available, use the console’s onscreen process rather than searching for a game update with a similar name.

Update a DualSense controller on PS5
Before you start
- Have the DualSense controller connected or paired with the PS5.
- Keep the console powered on while you follow the update prompt or manual check.
- If the console displays an update notice after connection, read it and continue only when you are ready to leave the controller connected during the process.
Use the update prompt
- Connect or pair the DualSense controller with the PS5.
- If an onscreen controller device-software update prompt appears, choose the option to continue.
- Follow each onscreen instruction until the PS5 reports that the process is complete.
- Leave the controller connected or paired until the console finishes; interrupting a firmware-style update can leave the controller unavailable until it is reconnected.
Check manually from Settings
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Open Controller (General).
- Select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. If no update is offered, the console is not presenting a newer controller device-software package for that controller at that time.
Menu wording and software behavior can change with later PS5 system-software releases. If a label differs slightly, look within the Accessories and Controller settings rather than treating a changed label as a missing feature.
Update a DualSense controller from a PC
Sony also supports controller updates on a PC through the PlayStation Accessories application. This is an alternative platform, not a claim that PC updating is faster or more reliable than updating on PS5.

PC procedure
- Install and open the PlayStation Accessories application on the PC.
- Connect the DualSense controller so the application can detect it.
- Use the application’s controller device-software update option when it is offered.
- Follow the application’s onscreen instructions and keep the controller connected until it confirms completion.
If the application cannot see the controller, check the physical connection first. A cable that only supplies power may not provide the data connection required for PC recognition; use a cable that supports both charging and data.
Check the PS5 controller battery level
The PS5 shows the DualSense battery in Control Centre. You do not need to start a game or open a separate battery utility.

- Press the PS button on the DualSense.
- When Control Centre opens, select Accessories.
- Find the controller in the Accessories view and read its battery icon.
Understand the battery icon

The lightning symbol is the useful confirmation when you have just connected a cable: it indicates that charging is in progress rather than merely showing that the controller is plugged in.
Charge the controller while troubleshooting
Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a USB cable. Sony says the controller can charge while the console is on or while it is in rest mode, provided the console is configured to supply power to its USB ports in rest mode.

Use the PS5’s USB connection
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button if necessary so the console recognizes the controller.
- Open PS > Control Centre > Accessories and check for the animated battery icon with the lightning symbol.
- When the battery is full, the animation stops and the icon shows three bars.
Enable power in Rest Mode
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Go to System.
- Select Power Saving.
- Open Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable the setting that supplies power to the USB ports for the period you want the controller to charge.
Sony notes that CFI-2000 model-group consoles may offer an Adaptive option in this rest-mode USB-power setting. The exact choices can therefore depend on the PS5 model group and its system software.
When a DualSense will not charge
Try the simplest connection changes first
- Disconnect and reconnect the cable firmly at both the controller and the PS5.
- Try another USB port on the PS5.
- Try another USB cable that supports both charging and data.
- Press the PS button, open Accessories, and check whether the icon now animates with the lightning symbol.
For this troubleshooting path, Sony specifically says a charge-only cable cannot be used. A cable can fit the USB port and still fail to provide the data connection needed for controller recognition or PC updating, so substitute a known charge-and-data cable rather than assuming every USB cable has the same capability.

If charging works only when the console is on
That symptom points to the PS5’s rest-mode power setting rather than proving that the controller or battery is defective. Recheck Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable USB-port power. On a CFI-2000 model-group console, review the available Adaptive option as well.
If the battery indicator never changes
- Confirm that the cable is connected to the console and controller, not just resting in the port.
- Test a different PS5 USB port.
- Replace a charge-only or damaged cable with a charge-and-data cable.
- Check the icon again in PS > Control Centre > Accessories rather than judging from the cable alone.
If none of those steps produces the charging animation, the available support instructions do not establish a specific software fix. Avoid claiming that an update will repair a hardware fault; first isolate the port, cable and rest-mode-power variables.
Update versus charge: which action solves which problem?

Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking in game updates: controller device software is handled through PS5 system software and the controller settings, not as a game patch.
- Assuming a plugged-in cable means charging: verify the animated lightning icon in Accessories.
- Using any cable that fits: a charge-only cable is unsuitable for Sony’s charging and PC-update troubleshooting path.
- Testing rest-mode charging without enabling USB power: the console may stop supplying power while asleep.
- Searching for a separate PS5 download: the supported manual route is the controller setting, while the PC route uses PlayStation Accessories.
A practical maintenance routine
- Install PS5 system-software updates when the console offers them.
- When you connect or pair a DualSense afterward, accept any controller device-software prompt.
- Periodically verify the battery from PS > Control Centre > Accessories, especially before a long session.
- If the controller does not appear to charge, confirm the lightning icon, change the USB port, and test a charge-and-data cable.
- If you rely on rest mode, verify USB-port power under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
This routine separates the two checks that are often confused: the controller’s device software is maintained through the PS5 update relationship or PlayStation Accessories on PC, while battery status and charging are confirmed in Control Centre.
