How to Update a DualSense Controller—and What “Factory Reset” Actually Does

For a standard PS5 DualSense, Sony documents a troubleshooting reset rather than a complete factory reset. Updating is done through PS5 system-software updates (or Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app on Windows). The rear-button reset clears neither pairing settings nor the controller’s configuration; after holding the button for at least five seconds, reconnect the controller by USB and press the PS button.

What you can—and cannot—reset on a standard DualSense

The phrase “factory reset” is misleading for the regular DualSense Wireless Controller. Sony’s controller support instructions describe pressing a recessed button on the back as a troubleshooting reset. Sony explicitly says, “This will not reconfigure the controller or affect pairing settings.” In practical terms, the procedure is intended to recover a controller that will not connect or behave normally; it is not documented as an operation that erases every setting or returns the device to a brand-new state.

That distinction matters when you decide what to try next. A reset may be useful after a failed connection, an unresponsive controller, or a controller that the PS5 no longer recognizes correctly. It does not promise to remove pairings, rewrite the controller’s configuration, or repair a damaged component. Treat it as one controlled troubleshooting step, followed by a fresh USB connection and a software check.

Do not apply instructions written for the DualSense Edge to the standard model. Sony treats the Edge as a separate product and documents a factory-settings reset for that controller. The instructions below are for the standard DualSense wireless controller.

  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

How DualSense updates are delivered

On a PS5, DualSense device-software updates are added when you install PS5 system-software updates. When a controller update is available, pair the controller and follow the prompt shown on the console. You can also open the controller menu and check manually.

This means the console is the normal maintenance route: you do not need to hunt for a separate controller firmware download. First bring the PS5 itself up to date, then let the console offer any corresponding DualSense update. If no prompt appears, the manual menu check is the appropriate way to see whether an update is available.

Sony provides a second route for Windows users: the PlayStation Accessories application can update a DualSense controller from a PC. Sony’s support page does not state a current application version or a detailed list of PC requirements for this procedure, so there is no reliable firmware-number or minimum-specification claim to add here. If the app offers an update, use the on-screen instructions it presents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The two routes are alternatives based on the device you have available. A PS5 update ties the controller update to console system software; the PC route puts the update inside PlayStation Accessories. Neither route is documented as requiring a paid service or a separate accessory beyond the USB connection used to communicate with the controller.

Before you update or reset

  • Identify the controller. The procedures here apply to the standard DualSense, not DualSense Edge. Model-specific Edge instructions should not be substituted.
  • Have a USB cable available. A cable is required to reconnect a controller after the rear-button reset. It is also the practical way to connect the controller to a Windows PC for PlayStation Accessories.
  • Make sure the PS5 can be operated. If the console is usable, update its system software before diagnosing a controller connection problem. The controller’s device-software updates are distributed with those console updates.
  • Locate a thin tool. The reset switch is inside a small hole on the controller’s rear. Sony describes using a pin or a similar tool; that tool is not supplied with the controller.
  • Save your work and close games. The update and reconnection steps can interrupt an active session. Starting from the PS5 home screen makes it easier to read prompts and navigate the Accessories menu.
  • Use the official software path. On PS5, use the system-software and Accessories menus. On Windows, use PlayStation Accessories rather than an unverified firmware utility.

None of these preparations changes the controller. They simply prevent a lost session, make the USB reconnection possible, and ensure that you are following the instructions for the correct product.

Update a DualSense on a PS5

This is Sony’s normal update path because controller device-software updates are distributed with PS5 system-software updates.

  1. Update the PS5 system software. Install any system-software update offered by the console. The controller update is included with the console update process rather than downloaded as an unrelated DualSense package.
  2. Pair the controller. Turn on the PS5 and connect or pair the DualSense so the console can communicate with it. If it is not recognized, perform the reset sequence later in this guide and reconnect by USB.
  3. Follow the on-screen controller-update prompt. If the console displays an update request, accept it and leave the controller connected while the process completes. Read each prompt instead of disconnecting as soon as the controller responds.
  4. Check manually if no prompt appears. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General), then select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
  5. Read the status shown there. The menu tells you whether an update is available. Sony does not publish a firmware version or release date in the cited support instructions, so use this screen—not an online version list—to determine whether your controller is current.
  6. Complete the update before testing. Once the console reports that the controller software is current or the update has finished, return to normal use and check whether the original connection or operation issue remains.

If the controller is not recognized well enough to pair, updating cannot repair that connection by itself. Use the reset procedure below, then reconnect over USB and try the update menu again. If the menu still cannot communicate with the controller, that is a reason to move to Sony’s repair guidance rather than repeatedly searching for a firmware number.

Update a DualSense from a Windows PC

Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application is the official PC route for updating the standard DualSense.

  1. Install or open Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application on your Windows PC.
  2. Connect the DualSense to the computer with a USB cable and allow the application to detect it.
  3. When the application reports that controller software is available, choose the update command and follow each on-screen instruction.
  4. Keep the controller connected until the application indicates that the process is finished. Do not rely on an assumed firmware number; Sony’s support material does not provide one.
  5. After completion, close the application normally and test the controller. If it was being used with a PS5, reconnect it to the console and press the PS button if the console asks for a connection.

The support instructions do not specify an app version, Windows release, cable specification, or other detailed PC requirements. If the application does not detect the controller, reconnect the USB cable, try the rear-button reset, and then launch the application again. Persistent detection or connection failures should be taken to PlayStation’s controller support and repair guidance rather than treated as proof that a particular firmware version is missing.

Do not infer that a PC update and a factory reset are the same operation. PlayStation Accessories is an update route; the recessed rear button is a troubleshooting reset. Sony’s documentation gives them different purposes and does not say that the update erases pairings or reconfigures the controller.

Reset the standard DualSense with its rear button

Use this sequence when the controller has connection or operation problems. Sony’s Canada troubleshooting page supplies the specific five-second hold time; the US controller page describes the same rear-button reset without stating a duration.

  1. Turn off the PS5. The console should not be running while you perform the reset.
  2. Find the reset hole. On the back of the controller, look for the small hole next to the Sony logo. The reset switch is recessed inside it.
  3. Press and hold the reset button. Insert a pin or similar tool and hold the button for at least five seconds. Do not substitute a forceful press on another opening; only the small reset hole is intended for this operation.
  4. Reconnect by USB. After releasing the button, connect the controller to the PS5 with the USB cable.
  5. Press the PS button. Press the PS button on the connected controller to establish the connection again.
  6. Try the software check again. Once the PS5 recognizes the controller, open the DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software menu and check whether an update is offered.

The complete sequence—console off, rear button held for at least five seconds, USB reconnection, and PS-button press—is the documented troubleshooting reset. It is not a data-erasure workflow. If you release the button before five seconds, repeat the sequence with the full hold time rather than assuming the reset completed.

What the reset changes

Sony’s wording is the key limitation: the reset “will not reconfigure the controller or affect pairing settings.” Therefore, do not expect it to remove saved pairings, rewrite every controller setting, or produce the same result as a full factory restore on another product. Its purpose is to give the controller a basic recovery step before you reconnect it and continue troubleshooting.

Because pairing settings are not affected, the USB reconnection is still required in Sony’s procedure. Pressing the PS button after the cable is connected lets the PS5 establish the controller connection in the recommended order. The reset is not a substitute for that final connection step.

  • Chat online through the built-in microphone
  • Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack

This also explains why a successful reset may appear uneventful. There may be no visible “factory restored” message and no reason to expect custom configuration or pairing information to disappear. The useful test is whether the controller can reconnect and whether the PS5 or PlayStation Accessories can now communicate with it.

If updating or resetting does not solve the problem

The PS5 still cannot use the controller

First confirm that the PS5 itself is running current system software, because Sony distributes DualSense device-software updates with those console updates. Then repeat the rear-button procedure exactly: switch the PS5 off, hold the recessed button for at least five seconds, reconnect by USB, and press PS.

If the console can be navigated with another controller, use that controller to reach the Accessories menu and check the DualSense software status. If the affected controller cannot be recognized even after the USB reconnection, the issue is no longer just an absent update prompt.

The controller works by cable but not as expected afterward

Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software and check for an available update. The manual menu check is useful when an automatic prompt did not appear.

Do not label the cable-only behavior a factory-reset failure. The documented reset does not reconfigure the controller or alter pairing settings, so the next useful action is to verify software status and then use Sony’s troubleshooting path if the behavior persists.

A Windows PC does not detect the controller

Use Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application, reconnect the USB cable, and perform the rear-button reset before trying detection again. Sony does not publish a universal PC requirement list in the cited procedure, so avoid assuming that a particular app version or operating-system build is the cause without an error message pointing to it.

If the app still cannot see the controller, test the sequence in a calm order: close and reopen the application, reconnect the USB cable, repeat the five-second reset, and reconnect to the PC. Continued failure should be handled through PlayStation’s controller support and repair information.

The controller remains unusable

A reset is not a guarantee against a hardware failure. If the controller still has connection problems after the console is updated and the reset sequence has been completed, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs for further diagnostics. That path is appropriate when the issue persists rather than repeating the same reset indefinitely.

A replacement or spare DualSense is a practical consideration only after those support steps indicate that the original controller remains faulty. Sony’s instructions do not say that buying another controller is required for an update or reset.

PS5 and PC methods compared

Task PS5 console Windows PC
Official software route PS5 system-software update; controller updates are added with it PlayStation Accessories application
Manual check Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software Check the status and update offered inside PlayStation Accessories
Connection used for the update Pair the controller with the PS5 and follow its prompt Connect the controller to the PC with USB and follow the app
Firmware version supplied by Sony’s cited instructions Not stated Not stated
Physical reset method Turn off the PS5, hold the rear reset button for at least five seconds, reconnect by USB, then press PS
Effect of the standard reset Sony says it does not reconfigure the controller or affect pairing settings

The comparison does not make one method universally better. Use the PS5 route when the console is available and operational; use PlayStation Accessories when a Windows PC is the available update device. In either case, the update status should come from Sony’s own menu or application, not an unofficial version list.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the procedure a complete factory reset. That overstates what Sony documents for the standard DualSense.
  • Using DualSense Edge instructions. Edge is a different controller with separate support documentation.
  • Skipping the console update. On PS5, controller device-software updates arrive with PS5 system-software updates.
  • Looking for an unsupported firmware number. The cited official pages do not state a current version or release date; check the console menu or PlayStation Accessories instead.
  • Releasing the rear button too quickly. Sony’s Canada instructions specify at least five seconds.
  • Forgetting the USB and PS-button steps. Sony’s reset sequence ends by reconnecting the controller to the PS5 over USB and pressing PS.
  • Resetting while the PS5 is still running. Sony’s sequence begins with the console turned off.
  • Pressing the wrong opening. The intended switch is the small recessed hole next to the Sony logo on the rear.
  • Assuming a reset proves the hardware is healthy. Continued failure should move to Sony’s repair diagnostics.
  • Disconnecting during an update. Follow the console or application prompt and wait for its completion message.

Are DualSense Edge reset instructions interchangeable with standard DualSense instructions?

No. Sony treats DualSense Edge as a separate product and documents a factory-settings reset for it. Use the standard DualSense procedure only for the regular controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Update a standard DualSense through PS5 system software or Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app on Windows. For connection trouble, turn off the PS5, hold the rear reset button for at least five seconds, reconnect by USB, and press PS. Sony does not describe that procedure as a complete factory reset: it does not reconfigure the controller or affect pairing settings. If the problem remains after the software check and reset, use PlayStation Repairs rather than assuming another reset or an unlisted firmware version will fix a hardware fault.
