YouTube does not provide one universal live-playlist editor, so the exact steps and whether a change affects the current track or only upcoming tracks depend on your playout tool.
Understand what stays live—and where the playlist lives
YouTube receives a live audio-video feed from an encoder. As YouTube Help puts it, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The encoder can be software or standalone hardware; the playlist is managed separately by the media player, playout system, or cloud service feeding it. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the ingest connection, not how to edit that queue.

That separation is the key to avoiding an interruption: make the change in the source’s playlist editor, not by stopping and restarting the encoder. YouTube says a stream ends when the encoder stops sending. An edit can still interrupt playback if the particular player or service handles it that way, so check its current instructions before changing a live queue.

Update the playlist without stopping the encoder
- Identify the source feeding the stream. It may be a local media player feeding encoder software, an integrated playout tool, or a cloud streaming service. Find the playlist or queue editor for that source; YouTube does not prescribe a particular player.
- Confirm how live edits work in that tool. Check whether an added or removed item takes effect immediately, applies only to upcoming items, or waits for the current track to finish. Do not assume edits are gapless or that the current item will continue unchanged; YouTube’s documentation does not establish those behaviors.
- Keep the encoder session and output running. Make the queue change in the player or service while it continues sending content to YouTube. Do not stop the encoder just to replace or rearrange playlist items if the source supports live editing.
- Verify playback after the edit. Check the live preview for continuing audio and video, then monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. This confirms what is happening on your stream; it is not a guarantee that the edit was interruption-free.
- Plan separately for long-stream archives. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will produce one complete automatic archive.
Choose a local or cloud playlist source
Both approaches can keep a YouTube feed running, but they differ in where you edit the playlist and what must remain online. In either case, confirm the named product’s current queue behavior, recovery process, monitoring options, and plan requirements before relying on it for continuous playback.

YouTube’s list of live streaming tools and services includes Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; YouTube notes that listed products are not made by YouTube. OneStream Live’s 24/7 YouTube streaming instructions say that this workflow requires its Enterprise plan. Plan details can change, so check the provider’s current terms. Neither reference establishes how every queue edit behaves.
Keep playlist edits separate from YouTube ingest settings
The queue of songs or prerecorded videos is not the same thing as the stream’s transport playlist. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance describes a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those are transport segments, not a limit on the number of tracks or videos in your radio playlist.

YouTube’s API also distinguishes a liveStream resource, which carries audio-video content and streaming settings, from a liveBroadcast event. Its example separates the continuing feed from broadcast-event management; it does not describe editing a playout queue. Troubleshoot an edit that interrupts playback
- The YouTube stream ends when you change the queue: Check whether the player or service stopped its output or restarted the encoder. YouTube says stopping content from the encoder ends the stream. If the tool offers a live queue-edit function, use that rather than restarting the feed.
- The new item does not play: Check the playlist editor’s rules. The change may apply only to upcoming items, or the current item may need to finish. The behavior is product-specific.
- Audio or video disappears after the edit: Check the source player and YouTube’s live preview to locate where playback stopped. Confirm the source still has playable media and the encoder is still sending; do not assume an edit was seamless.
- You expect one archive from a stream longer than 12 hours: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours only. Make a separate archive plan rather than relying on one complete automatic recording of a longer continuous stream.
