Use the message’s own opt-out method when it is legitimate: click the clearly labeled unsubscribe link in a horoscope marketing email, or reply to a recognized automated alert with a clear term such as STOP or UNSUBSCRIBE. If a message is unexpected, asks for personal or financial information, or has a suspicious link, do not interact with it; verify the purported sender independently and report or filter the message instead.
The timing rules below are U.S. federal guidance. Other countries may impose different requirements.

First, decide whether the message is safe to answer
Before trying to unsubscribe, identify what you received and whether you recognize the sender. A horoscope email may be a daily newsletter, a promotional offer, or a message connected with an account. A horoscope text may be a recurring alert that you knowingly enabled, or it may be an unsolicited spam or phishing message.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that an “unsubscribe” link in a fraudulent message can be part of a phishing attempt. When the message itself is not trustworthy, reporting and filtering are safer than testing its link.

Email: stop horoscope newsletters and promotions
1. Open a recent message and find the sender’s opt-out method
In a legitimate commercial email, look for an unsubscribe link or another clearly explained method for stopping marketing messages. U.S. CAN-SPAM guidance from the FTC says a commercial email must provide an opt-out method that is clear and easy to recognize. The link is often near the footer, but use the location and wording supplied by the sender rather than relying on a particular layout.
Follow the resulting page only when the sender and destination are credible. A legitimate page may let you stop a particular horoscope newsletter, change message frequency, or opt out of every marketing email from that sender. If it offers categories, read the choices carefully: stopping a daily horoscope may not stop all promotional mail.
2. Choose an all-marketing opt-out when you want everything stopped
A sender may offer separate controls for different message types, but commercial-email rules require a way to stop all marketing messages from that sender. Select the broadest marketing opt-out if you no longer want horoscopes, offers, or other promotional mail. Keep a copy or screenshot of the confirmation if the page displays one; it can help you identify the request later if messages persist.

3. Understand what an unsubscribe does not necessarily stop
Being a customer or member does not remove your ability to opt out of marketing email. It also does not mean every message from the organization is marketing. A narrowly defined transactional or relationship message—such as information needed to complete a transaction or report an account change—may be treated differently from a horoscope promotion. An unsubscribe request is aimed at marketing mail; it is not a request to close an account or cancel a service unless the sender expressly provides that separate function.
4. Allow the U.S. commercial-email deadline to run
According to the FTC’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide, a sender must honor a commercial-email opt-out within 10 business days. The opt-out mechanism must remain capable of processing requests for at least 30 days after the message was sent. These are compliance periods for commercial email, not a promise that every mailbox will be silent immediately and not deadlines that automatically apply to text alerts.

| Rule | What it means for a horoscope email |
|---|---|
| 10 business days | The sender’s commercial-email opt-out must be honored within this period, according to FTC guidance. |
| At least 30 days | The opt-out mechanism must continue to process requests for at least this long after the message was sent. |
| Not a text deadline | These figures describe commercial email. Do not assume they set a stopping time for SMS alerts. |
When the email link is missing, broken, or unsafe
Use your mailbox controls
If the message is from a sender you recognize but the link does not work, use the controls supplied by your email provider. Depending on the service, you may be able to mark the message as spam or junk, block the sender or domain, or use a built-in unsubscribe command. The FTC’s consumer advice recommends checking your provider’s own instructions because labels and available controls vary.
Marking a single message as spam helps the provider classify similar mail. Blocking a sender or domain can prevent delivery to your inbox, but it may not stop the sender from trying another address. If both controls are available and the messages continue, use the provider’s reporting option as well as its block function.

Some unwanted messages imitate a newsletter and use an unsubscribe button to send you to a malicious site. Treat a message as suspicious when you did not sign up, the sender address is unfamiliar or oddly spelled, the link’s destination does not match the purported organization, or the message pressures you to act urgently. Do not enter a password, payment information, phone number, or other personal details on a page reached from that message.
Instead, report the email through your mailbox service and delete it. If you believe the message may be genuine, find the organization’s contact information independently—through a website or number already stored in your records—and ask it to confirm your subscription status. Do not use contact details supplied only in the questionable email.
Text alerts: opt out of a legitimate automated horoscope service
Use a clear reply when you recognize the service
For an automated alert that appears to come from a service you knowingly use, reply with an unambiguous opt-out instruction. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) identifies STOP, QUIT, END, REVOKE, OPT OUT, CANCEL, and UNSUBSCRIBE as examples of reasonable language. Its 2024 order explains that “there are no magic words that consumers must say.” You do not have to match one exact keyword, and the FCC says you may respond in the language in which the message was received.

Send one clear request rather than a long explanation. Keep the original message until you see whether the service confirms the change. If the service provides a help or support route in the message and you need to distinguish marketing alerts from account notices, use an independently verified contact method when possible.
Do not reply to a text that looks like a scam
The FTC advises consumers not to click an unexpected text’s link or provide personal or financial information. A message claiming to be a horoscope service but asking you to “verify” a bank card, social-security number, password, or one-time code is not a normal unsubscribe step. Do not call a number or open an attachment supplied by that message.
If you think the alert could be real, locate the company’s website or telephone number from a source you already trust. Contact it there and ask whether your number is enrolled in alerts. This independent check avoids confirming to a scammer that your phone number is active.
What to do when horoscope texts continue
Report the message to your carrier and messaging app
If a text continues after a legitimate opt-out request, or if it was unsolicited, use the reporting tools already available on your phone. Your messaging app may label a conversation “Report junk” or “Report spam”; select that option when present. Wireless providers may also offer blocking or spam-reporting tools. The exact screens differ by phone, operating system, app, and carrier, so follow the instructions displayed by your service.
You can also forward an unwanted text to 7726, which spells SPAM. This short code is used for carrier reporting. Forward the original message rather than rewriting it so the provider receives the sender information and content.

Block the number and filter unknown senders
After reporting, block the sending number through your phone’s conversation or contact controls if that option is available. Many phones also have a setting that filters messages from unknown senders into a separate area. Filtering reduces interruptions but can hide a wanted message from a new number, so check the filtered folder periodically if you are expecting legitimate verification or service alerts.
Report suspected fraud to the FTC
For a suspected scam, submit a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. A report does not replace blocking the number or protecting an account, but it gives the FTC information about the campaign. Do not include passwords or unnecessary sensitive information in a report.
Email and text opt-outs are not the same rule
It is important not to transfer the email timetable to SMS. CAN-SPAM governs commercial email requirements described by the FTC. FTC consumer guidance distinguishes phone-to-phone SMS from commercial email, while FCC guidance addresses reasonable opt-out language for automated text messages.
| Question | Commercial horoscope email | Recognized automated horoscope text |
|---|---|---|
| Primary action | Use the sender’s clearly stated unsubscribe link or opt-out method. | Reply with a clear term such as STOP or UNSUBSCRIBE. |
| Exact required wording | The sender must provide a clear, recognizable opt-out route; the recipient does not need a particular phrase. | The FCC lists several reasonable terms and says there are no magic words. |
| Timing information | FTC guidance states 10 business days to honor the request and at least 30 days of availability for the mechanism. | No CAN-SPAM email deadline should be applied automatically. |
| If the message is suspicious | Do not click the link; report it through the email service. | Do not click, reply, or provide information; verify the sender independently. |
| Persistent unwanted messages | Use spam/junk reporting and sender or domain blocking. | Use report-junk/report-spam, block or filter controls, forward to 7726, and report suspected fraud. |
A practical decision path
- Ask whether you expected the message. If not, treat it as potentially suspicious instead of clicking unsubscribe.
- Identify the channel. Email and SMS have different opt-out practices and different federal guidance.
- For a recognized marketing email, open the sender’s unsubscribe page and choose the all-marketing option if you want every promotion stopped.
- For a recognized automated text, send one clear opt-out such as
STOP,CANCEL, orUNSUBSCRIBE. - For a suspicious message, do not click, call, reply, or disclose information. Verify the organization through an independently known channel.
- If messages persist, report them, block the sender or number, and enable the spam or unknown-sender filtering offered by your email or phone service.
- For unwanted texts, forward the original to 7726 and report suspected scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Troubleshooting common situations
The unsubscribe page asks me to sign in
Do not enter credentials on a page reached from an unexpected email. Instead, open the organization’s website by typing an address you already know or using a trusted bookmark, sign in there, and inspect notification settings. If you cannot verify the site, report the email rather than supplying a password.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteI clicked unsubscribe and messages still arrive
Check whether you opted out of one list rather than all marketing categories. If the message is commercial email, allow the FTC’s stated 10-business-day honor period. During that period, mark later copies as spam or junk so your mailbox can learn the pattern. If messages continue beyond the applicable period, block the sender or domain and retain the confirmation and message headers for your provider’s abuse-reporting process.
Best Value
I still need account or transaction messages
Do not confuse marketing opt-out with account closure. A service may continue sending narrowly defined transactional or relationship messages, such as information needed to complete a transaction or report an account change. If you want to stop those as well, use the service’s separate account, notification, or cancellation process through a verified channel.
The text came from a short code or a different number
A changed sending number is a reason to verify the service, not proof that the message is fraudulent. If you recognize the underlying service, check its official notification settings or contact page independently. If you did not enroll, avoid replying and use report, block, filtering, and 7726 procedures instead.
What information to keep when a campaign will not stop
Save the original email or text, the date and time, the sending address or number, and any opt-out confirmation. Do not forward private account details unnecessarily. This record helps your email provider, carrier, or the FTC understand the pattern and shows which opt-out route you used.
For email, preserve the message in its original form when your provider offers a “show original” or equivalent reporting function. For texts, forward the original conversation to 7726 rather than copying only the wording. These steps give the reporting channel more useful sender information.
U.S. scope and limits of the guidance
The legal and agency material cited here is from U.S. federal sources. It provides general consumer and business guidance, not a decision about a particular horoscope sender or a specific legal dispute. A reader in another country should consult that country’s communications regulator and consumer-protection rules. The email timing figures apply to commercial email opt-outs; they should not be presented as a universal promise for every message type.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Recognize the sender and decide whether the message is legitimate before interacting.
- For legitimate horoscope email, use the clearly labeled unsubscribe route and select an all-marketing option when appropriate.
- For legitimate automated horoscope texts, send a clear opt-out such as
STOP; the FCC says no single magic word is required. - Never click an unexpected link or disclose personal or financial information merely to unsubscribe.
- Use your email provider’s spam, junk, block, and reporting tools when a link is missing, broken, or unsafe.
- Use phone and messaging-app report, block, and unknown-sender controls for persistent texts; forward unwanted texts to 7726.
- Report suspected text scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Remember that CAN-SPAM’s 10-business-day and 30-day figures describe commercial email, not every SMS alert.
