To unstake stETH through Lido, submit a withdrawal request, wait for Lido’s accounting oracle to finalize it, then claim the reserved ETH. The request locks your stETH and mints an unstETH ERC-721 NFT that acts as the claim ticket. You do not receive ETH immediately, and the final ETH amount is set when the request is finalized rather than when it is submitted.
This guide explains the wallet and contract flows, queue timing, request limits, payout calculation, tracking tools, and the trade-offs between protocol withdrawal and selling stETH on a secondary market.

What “unstaking” stETH on Lido actually does
Lido withdrawal is an asynchronous, three-stage process:

- Finalization: Lido’s accounting oracle processes eligible requests in FIFO order after the required timelock and after enough ETH is available.
- Claim: you claim the reserved ETH. The claim sends ETH to the request owner or a specified recipient and burns the unstETH NFT.
Because finalization happens later, “unstaking” is not an instant token conversion. Until the request is finalized, your stETH is locked in the queue and represented by the NFT rather than remaining in your wallet as freely transferable stETH.

The unstETH NFT is your claim ticket
Each withdrawal request mints an unstETH ERC-721 NFT. Keep control of that NFT and the wallet that owns it: the NFT represents the pending request and is required for the claim step. Losing control of it can prevent you from claiming the reserved ETH. The claim operation burns the NFT after the ETH transfer.
Before you submit a withdrawal
Check the amount and token type
The documented request range is 100 wei minimum to 1,000 stETH maximum per request. A request below 100 wei is not valid, and an amount above 1,000 stETH must be split across multiple requests. Each split request has its own queue position and its own unstETH NFT.
If you hold wstETH rather than stETH, use Lido’s dedicated wstETH withdrawal-request method. Do not assume that the ordinary stETH approval and request path accepts wstETH directly.

You need an Ethereum wallet that can connect to Lido’s withdrawal interface and sign Ethereum transactions. Keep enough native ETH in the wallet to pay the network fees for the actions you perform. The exact fee depends on Ethereum network conditions and the transactions your wallet submits; Lido does not publish a single fixed fee for every request or claim.
Understand the amount you will receive
The ETH payout is not guaranteed to equal the stETH amount shown when you submit. Lido’s accounting-oracle specification states that the stETH:ETH redemption rate for each request is determined at finalization and is the inverse of the ETH:stETH staking rate. A severe protocol loss could therefore produce less than 1 ETH for 1 stETH. Lido’s cited specification notes that such a loss has not occurred historically, but the mechanism does not promise a permanently fixed 1:1 redemption.
How to unstake stETH through Lido’s withdrawal interface
The interface follows the contract sequence below. Wallet labels can vary, but the underlying stages remain the same.
1. Connect your Ethereum wallet
- Open Lido’s withdrawal interface.
- Connect the Ethereum wallet that holds the stETH or wstETH you want to withdraw.
- Confirm that the selected account and network are correct before signing anything.
The request owner is the account that submits the request. If the interface lets you specify a recipient, verify that address before signing; after finalization, the reserved ETH can be sent to the request owner or to the specified recipient.

2. Enter an amount within the request limits
Enter the amount to withdraw and check the interface’s displayed limits. For more than 1,000 stETH, create multiple requests rather than attempting one oversized transaction. Record each request separately because every request receives its own NFT and status.
3. Approve the token or use the supported permit flow
For stETH, the interface will normally ask you to approve the amount that the withdrawal queue may move. Confirm the token, spender, and amount in your wallet before signing. If your wallet and the interface support Lido’s permit flow, you may be able to authorize the request without a separate traditional approval transaction.
For wstETH, select the dedicated wstETH request path shown by Lido. Approval and request details differ from the stETH path, so read the wallet prompt rather than approving an unrelated token or contract.
4. Submit the withdrawal request
After approval, submit the request transaction. Lido locks the selected tokens in the queue and mints an unstETH ERC-721 NFT representing the request. Save the transaction hash, NFT or request identifier, amount, and owner address. These details are useful when tracking status or diagnosing a failed claim later.
5. Wait for finalization
The request enters a FIFO queue. Lido’s accounting oracle finalizes batches when a request is eligible, its timelock has passed, and sufficient ETH is available. The queue can therefore move at a different rate at different times. There is no universal guaranteed waiting period.
6. Claim the reserved ETH
Once the request is marked finalized and claimable, return to the withdrawal interface, connect the wallet controlling the unstETH NFT, and choose the claim action for that request. Confirm the recipient and amount in the wallet. The claim transfers the reserved ETH and burns the unstETH NFT.
Using the WithdrawalQueueERC721 contract directly
Advanced users and integrators can interact with Lido’s WithdrawalQueueERC721 contract instead of the web interface. The same lifecycle applies: authorize the token, call the appropriate request function, monitor the request, and call the claim function after finalization.

Contract flow for stETH
- Approve the WithdrawalQueueERC721 contract to spend the intended stETH amount, or use the supported permit-based authorization if your integration implements it.
- Call the contract’s stETH withdrawal-request method with an amount between 100 wei and 1,000 stETH per request.
- Store the returned request identifier and the unstETH NFT ownership details.
- Use the contract’s withdrawal-status functions to determine whether the request is pending, finalized, or claimable.
- After finalization, call the claim function for the request and supply the intended recipient when the contract interface supports that option.
Contract flow for wstETH
wstETH uses a dedicated request method. Your integration should identify the wstETH amount, authorize the correct token and contract, call the dedicated method, and store the resulting request information. Do not substitute a generic stETH call for a wstETH request.

What to verify before signing a contract transaction
- The contract address is the official WithdrawalQueueERC721 deployment you intended to use.
- The token and amount in the approval match your withdrawal plan.
- The request amount is within the documented minimum and maximum.
- The recipient address is correct where the call accepts a recipient.
- Your wallet is connected to Ethereum and has enough ETH for transaction fees.
A contract call can succeed while an incorrect recipient or token approval creates a practical loss. Treat every wallet prompt as an authorization, not as a preview that can be edited after signing.
How long does a Lido withdrawal take?
Lido does not provide one guaranteed wait time that applies to every request. Timing depends on oracle processing, the FIFO position of your request, the required timelock, available ETH for finalized batches, and broader protocol conditions.
Why two requests can finish at different times
A later request may not be claimable simply because an earlier request was small, and a request’s age alone does not determine completion. The accounting oracle finalizes eligible batches when the protocol’s conditions are met. Requests that are still waiting for eligibility, timelock completion, or sufficient ETH remain pending.
How to estimate and track a request
Lido provides withdrawal-status functions and a Withdrawals API. For a new amount, these tools can provide a current estimate; for an existing withdrawal, use the request ID to retrieve its status. Estimates are dynamic and should be treated as indications rather than promises. Recheck the status before planning a payment or moving the wallet’s NFT.
What the status terms mean in practice

Will you receive exactly 1 ETH for 1 stETH?
Not as a guaranteed rule. Lido determines the redemption rate for each request at finalization. The documented formula uses the inverse of the ETH:stETH staking rate at that time, so the final amount can differ from the amount you might expect at submission.
Rewards earned after your tokens enter the withdrawal queue do not accrue to that withdrawing request. Those rewards are effectively distributed to the stETH holders who remain in the system. In Lido’s words, “token holders don’t receive rewards but still take risks during withdrawal.” This is a consequence of locking the tokens while they wait for finalization.

Why the submission screen is not a final settlement quote
An interface may show an indicative amount, but the protocol cannot fix the final payout until the oracle finalizes the request. The staking rate, protocol accounting, and conditions affecting available ETH are evaluated for the finalization event. Use the displayed figure as an estimate, not as a guaranteed settlement amount.
Request limits and splitting a large withdrawal

Splitting a withdrawal is a protocol requirement, not a way to bypass the queue. Each request is processed as its own NFT-backed claim and may have a different position or finalization outcome.

If you need ETH sooner, Lido’s integration guidance notes that exchanges and swap aggregators may offer a more convenient user experience. That route is a market swap, not an accelerated version of the withdrawal queue.

Choose the queue when direct protocol settlement and native ETH matter more than immediate execution. Consider a market swap when speed matters more and you accept market pricing, slippage, and the additional venue or contract exposure.
Security and operational pitfalls
Giving up control of the unstETH NFT
The NFT is tied to the pending withdrawal. Keep it in a wallet you control and avoid sending it to an exchange, burn address, or unrelated contract. If a team manages the request for you, verify how that arrangement preserves the right to claim.
Assuming “requested” means “claimable”
A successful request transaction only starts the process. You must wait for the status to become finalized or claimable before attempting to claim. Submitting repeated transactions because the first request is still pending does not make the original request finish sooner.

Ignoring the recipient field
When a claim or request lets you specify a recipient, compare the address character by character with the intended destination before signing. A valid transaction to the wrong address is not a protocol failure that the interface can reverse.
Approving the wrong token or amount
Read the wallet prompt for the token symbol, amount, and spender. For wstETH, use the dedicated request flow. Revoke or reduce an unnecessary allowance using your wallet’s approved token-management tools if your security policy requires it.
Planning around an estimated date
Queue estimates change as requests, oracle reports, timelocks, and ETH availability change. Do not commit funds to a deadline that depends on an estimate being exact.
Troubleshooting a pending or failed withdrawal
The request remains pending
- Check the request ID in Lido’s status tools or Withdrawals API.
- Confirm that the request has not yet met the timelock or batch-eligibility conditions.
- Check whether the queue is waiting for sufficient ETH for finalization.
- Keep the unstETH NFT in the request owner’s wallet while you wait.
The claim button is unavailable
Verify that the request is finalized and claimable, not merely requested. Then connect the wallet that controls the unstETH NFT. If the request is finalized but the interface still does not show a claim action, compare the NFT owner, request ID, and connected network before attempting a direct contract status check.

Read the wallet’s revert message and confirm the request state, token approval, amount, recipient, and network. A request that is already claimed cannot be claimed again because the unstETH NFT is burned. Do not submit a replacement transaction until you understand whether the original transaction was mined, reverted, or is still pending.
You cannot find the NFT
Use the request identifier and the wallet’s NFT activity to confirm which account received the unstETH token. If ownership was transferred, the current NFT holder may control the claim. If you cannot establish ownership, stop signing additional transactions and use Lido’s official status information and contract records to identify the request state.
A complete withdrawal checklist
- Confirm you are withdrawing stETH or select the dedicated wstETH path.
- Keep each request between 100 wei and 1,000 stETH.
- Connect the correct Ethereum wallet and retain enough ETH for network fees.
- Review the approval or permit prompt before authorizing token movement.
- Save the transaction hash, request ID, amount, and unstETH NFT owner.
- Track the request with Lido’s status functions or Withdrawals API.
- Wait for finalization; a submitted request is not yet claimable.
- Confirm the claim recipient and use the NFT-owning wallet.
- Verify the received ETH and the burned NFT after the claim transaction settles.
Bottom line
Lido unstaking is a request–finalization–claim workflow, not an instant 1:1 swap. Submit a valid request, protect the unstETH NFT, monitor the dynamic queue, and claim only after the accounting oracle finalizes the request. The final ETH amount is determined at finalization, while waiting requests stop receiving rewards. A secondary-market swap can settle sooner, but it replaces the protocol queue with market pricing, slippage, and venue or contract exposure.
