Gmail’s Undo Send feature delays delivery for a cancellation period you choose: 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds. If that notification disappears, Gmail generally cannot retrieve the message from a recipient’s inbox.
Undo Send is a short delivery delay, not a conventional after-delivery recall. The instructions below cover Gmail in a browser, the Android and iPhone apps, scheduled messages, external mail clients and damage control when the timer has expired.

How to unsend an email in Gmail on a computer
- Open Gmail in a browser and send your message.
- Look at the lower-left corner for the Message sent notification.
- Click Undo before the cancellation period expires.
- Gmail cancels the send and returns the message to the compose window, where you can edit it, save it as a draft or discard it.
The Undo control is temporary; it is not a button in the permanent Sent folder. Google’s wording can vary slightly by account, language or interface redesign. See Google’s computer instructions.
How to unsend an email in the Gmail app
Android
- Open the Gmail app and send the message.
- Immediately watch for the Sent confirmation.
- Tap Undo.
These controls appear only briefly after sending. For delayed messages, Google recommends checking Sent, Drafts, connectivity and any delivery-error notice. See Google’s Android guidance.

iPhone and iPad
- Open the Gmail app and send the message.
- Find the immediate Sent confirmation.
- Tap Undo.
This applies when you send through the Gmail app. It does not automatically apply when a Gmail account is configured in Apple’s built-in Mail app. See Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions.

- Click Settings.
- Select See all settings.
- In the General tab, find Undo Send.
- Set Send cancellation period to 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds.
- Scroll down and click Save Changes.
30 seconds is the maximum. It delays delivery by up to that amount; it does not create a way to recall a message after delivery. Google documents the setting at Gmail Help. Choose 30 seconds for high-stakes messages, attachments or multiple recipients. A shorter setting delivers routine mail sooner but leaves less time to catch an error.

Can you recall a Gmail message after Undo disappears?
Usually, no. Once the cancellation period expires, Gmail treats the message as sent. Deleting it from your Sent folder removes your copy, not copies already received. A recipient may have read, downloaded, archived, forwarded or captured the message, and Gmail has no ordinary control to erase those copies.

What to do if you missed the cancellation window
Treat a mistaken message as an incident to contain, not as a Gmail setting to fix.
- Contact the recipient immediately and ask them to disregard and delete the message.
- State precisely what was exposed, including any attachments, and request deletion of both the email and files.
- If you sent a password, API key or authentication token, change or revoke it immediately.
- For payment details, contact the issuer and replace or cancel the exposed information where possible.
- If the recipient is inside your organization, notify the appropriate IT, security, privacy or compliance team.
- For a mailing list or group, contact its owner or moderator and follow the organization’s incident process.
- Preserve relevant details if the event may require formal reporting.
Do not wait for a reply before acting; confirmation that a message was opened can arrive later than the practical response window.

If the email is scheduled, you have more time
A scheduled message has not completed its send, so it can be canceled before the scheduled time:

- Open the scheduled message.
- Click Cancel send.
- Gmail converts it back into a draft.
Google says Gmail supports up to 100 scheduled emails, and a scheduled message may go out a few minutes after its scheduled time. Details are in Google’s scheduling help.

Gmail Undo Send not appearing? Troubleshoot the situation
You sent through Apple Mail, Outlook or another client
The Gmail setting is primarily a Gmail interface feature. A Gmail account used in Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird, a CRM or another app may follow that client’s send behavior and may not show Gmail’s Undo notification. Check that application for its own undo, delay send or recall controls, but do not assume they work like Gmail’s. Google directs users who sent through an external client to use the Gmail app or mail.google.com for the Gmail workflow; see Google’s guidance.
The notification vanished or connectivity failed
- Check Sent and Drafts.
- Look for a delivery-error notice.
- Ask the recipient to check Spam or Junk.
- Verify Wi‑Fi or mobile-data connectivity.
- If the message might have gone through, contact the recipient rather than assuming it was unsent.
A message missing from the recipient’s inbox may be delayed, filtered, rejected or still processing; that does not mean it remains retractable.
Undo Send versus a true email recall

Preventing future Gmail mistakes
- Set Undo Send to 30 seconds.
- For important mail, write the message, add attachments and save a draft before entering the final recipient list.
- Check To, Cc, Bcc, reply-to information and attachments in a final pass.
- Use Schedule send for nonurgent messages so you retain control until the scheduled time.
- For high-risk organizational workflows, consider an approved delayed-delivery or review process; no tool guarantees retrieval after delivery.
The Bottom Line
Gmail can cancel a message only during its short Undo Send delay—up to 30 seconds. Once that prompt is gone, act quickly with the recipient and your security team; deleting your Sent copy will not erase theirs.
