What this guide can and cannot safely cover
Bootloader unlocking and custom-recovery installation are separate operations. The first is a documented Android bootloader flow. The second requires a recovery image built for the exact Pixel 10 variant, partition layout and firmware level. No currently maintained Pixel 10 recovery image, maintainer or consumer-safe flashing sequence is established in the available device documentation.

Android Open Source Project (AOSP) recovery guidance says Pixel development does not use fastboot boot to test recovery; its development workflow works with a boot image and selects Recovery mode. That is architectural guidance for development, not an end-user custom-recovery recipe.

An unlocked state is a capability, not a guarantee that every partition command remains valid. Modern Pixels can use dynamic partitions, seamless-update slots and recovery-as-boot, so a command copied from an A-only phone can target the wrong location or leave the device unable to start. Treat the model, build number and bootloader state as one compatibility set.
Before touching the bootloader
Confirm the phone and build
Identify the exact device name, storage variant and current Android build in the phone’s About section. Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold are specifically named in Google’s May 2026 anti-rollback warning. A command or image that is correct for one family member can be wrong for another.
Write down the complete build identifier and check Google’s live factory-image and OTA instructions for that build on the day you work. Firmware rules can change independently of the phone’s model name. Record whether the phone is already on the May 2026 release before downloading any image, because the anti-rollback level affects what can boot afterward.
Understand the May 2026 anti-rollback change
Google says the May 2026 update increments the Pixel 10-family bootloader anti-rollback version. After that update, older Android 16 builds cannot be flashed and booted. This is not a normal downgrade restriction that can be ignored by choosing a different slot.
Google also describes a possible unbootable state if the active slot fails and seamless-update fallback selects an inactive slot containing an older bootloader. Its special handling involves updating and booting the May 2026 build, then sideloading the corresponding full OTA so both slots contain bootable images. Read the current instructions against the build actually installed on your phone before any flashing, downgrade or slot operation.
This warning applies even when a downloaded image appears to match the phone’s Android version. Anti-rollback is a bootloader-enforced version floor, so an older package may be rejected or may not boot after a newer bootloader has been installed. Never erase an inactive slot or force a slot switch merely to make an older image start; use Google’s current recovery sequence for the exact build.
Make a real backup
Unlocking is a destructive operation. The device displays a warning and factory-resets itself when you confirm. Copy photos, authenticator exports, messages, documents, passkeys and application data to a separate location, and verify that you can sign back in after the reset. Cloud sync alone may not include local files or app databases.

Google’s factory-image documentation summarizes the risk this way: “Installing a factory image will erase all data from the device, and unlocking the bootloader will make your device less secure.” The security change remains while the bootloader is unlocked because modified or unsigned software can be accepted more easily than on a locked phone.
Plan for the reset as a separate event from later flashing. Enabling OEM unlocking does not itself erase data; the wipe happens when you accept the bootloader’s unlock confirmation. A backup made after entering fastboot is too late, so finish and verify it while Android is still running normally.
Install current Platform-Tools
Install the current official Android SDK Platform-Tools package for your computer. It supplies fastboot, the utility used for bootloader unlocking and image operations. Do not rely on an old copy bundled with another Android tool or a random download, and do not assume a release number remains current; use the version listed in Android Developers’ current release notes.
Use a reliable data connection between the computer and phone, keep the phone charged, and avoid interrupting a reboot or firmware operation. The software package is the requirement established by the documentation; a particular cable or accessory is not specified.
Platform-Tools is software, not a replacement for a device-specific image. Installing it successfully only proves that the computer has the utility; it does not validate a recovery file, partition map or firmware downgrade.
How to unlock a Pixel 10 bootloader
These steps describe the supported unlock flow at a high level. Menu wording and behavior should be checked on the exact current Pixel 10 build before you publish or automate button-by-button instructions.
- Back up the phone. Finish the backup described above before changing any developer or bootloader setting.
- Open Developer options. In Android Settings, locate Developer options and look for OEM unlocking. If the switch is hidden or unavailable, do not try to bypass it with a command; use the troubleshooting section below.
- Enable OEM unlocking when the phone permits it. The setting is a prerequisite for the unlock-ability state. Enabling it does not itself wipe the phone; the wipe occurs when you confirm the bootloader unlock.
- Install and test Platform-Tools. Open a terminal in the directory containing the current official tools. Confirm that the computer can run
fastbootbefore entering the bootloader. - Enter bootloader mode. Use the current Pixel 10 instructions for entering the bootloader, whether those instructions use an Android restart path or the device’s hardware-key sequence. Do not substitute a procedure written for an earlier Pixel model.
- Run the supported unlock command. With the phone showing its bootloader interface, issue
fastboot flashing unlock. AOSP documents this as the general unlock command for supported devices. - Read the phone’s warning and confirm on the phone. The confirmation screen explains that user data will be erased and that device security is reduced. Select the on-device confirmation only if you accept both consequences. A computer command cannot replace this confirmation.
- Wait for the reset and reboot. Do not disconnect the phone while it clears data and restarts. The first start can take longer than a normal reboot because Android must initialize as a newly reset device.
- Complete setup and verify the state. Restore only the data you need, reconnect your account and confirm that the build identifier is still the one you recorded. Leave the bootloader unlocked only while you have a specific, supported modification to perform.
If the command reports an error, do not repeatedly submit it or try an alternative unlock verb from an old guide. Read the message on the phone, return to Android if necessary, and correct the prerequisite or bootloader state. The on-device warning is the authoritative point at which the destructive action is accepted.

Why you should stop before flashing custom recovery
A bootloader unlock does not make every recovery image safe. A recovery must match the Pixel 10’s hardware, partition scheme, Android generation and current bootloader rules. The available documentation does not verify such an image or a maintainer’s current installation instructions.
Do not run an old guide’s fastboot flash recovery command, and do not try fastboot boot as a test. AOSP explicitly says Pixel devices use recovery-as-boot and do not support fastboot boot for recovery testing. A command can appear to complete while leaving the phone unable to boot, or it can write the wrong partition entirely.
Recovery-as-boot also means that “recovery partition” terminology from older tutorials may not describe the Pixel 10 layout. A guide that names a partition without identifying the current boot image arrangement, active slot and Android release is incomplete, even if its commands worked on a previous Pixel.
What evidence a future Pixel 10 recovery guide should provide
- The exact Pixel 10 model or regional variant supported.
- The recovery image’s build date, Android version and download checksum.
- A maintainer who is actively updating the image for current Pixel 10 firmware.
- Partition and boot-image instructions written for recovery-as-boot, not copied from a legacy A-only device.
- A tested restore procedure, including how to recover from a failed boot and how the May 2026 anti-rollback level affects slots.
- Clear instructions for returning to compatible official images before relocking, including the expected data reset.
Until those details exist, the responsible answer to “Can I install TWRP on a Pixel 10?” is that support is unresolved. Unlocking the phone is not proof that TWRP or another named recovery supports it. Do not infer support from a download page for Pixel 9, Pixel 8 or a generic Android build.
Stock restoration: choose the route that matches your goal
Custom recovery is not required to return a Pixel 10 to official software. Google documents two distinct stock-restoration routes:
| Route | Bootloader unlock required | Data wipe stated by Google | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full OTA sideload | No | No | Restoring or updating official firmware while preserving user data when the phone can follow Google’s OTA procedure. |
| Factory-image flashing | Yes for the factory-image workflow | Yes | Advanced recovery when a complete image replacement is necessary and you have a verified backup. |
These are stock paths, not substitutes for a third-party recovery. Choosing the less destructive OTA route does not create an unlocked bootloader or install custom tools; it simply restores Google’s signed software through the documented sideload process.
Full OTA route
Google generally recommends a full OTA package as easier and safer than factory-image flashing for stock restoration. It does not require an unlocked bootloader or a data wipe. Use the OTA package that matches the exact Pixel 10 model and build instructions, and follow Google’s current recovery and sideload sequence rather than mixing commands from a factory-image guide.

Because the OTA route preserves data according to Google’s comparison, it is the first option to consider when Android still reaches recovery or can accept a sideload. Confirm the package and instructions for the installed build; do not use an OTA intended for another Pixel 10-family variant.
Factory-image route
A factory image replaces the installed stock partitions and erases user data. It is therefore an advanced recovery route, not a shortcut to custom recovery. The May 2026 anti-rollback warning makes version selection and slot state especially important: an older Android 16 image may no longer flash or boot after the bootloader version has advanced.
Recommended Free Tools
Before starting, compare the image’s Android version and bootloader level with the phone’s current build. If the phone has already received the May 2026 update, follow Google’s special two-slot handling exactly. Do not improvise a downgrade, erase an inactive slot or force a reboot when the official instructions call for first booting the newer build and then sideloading its matching full OTA.

OEM unlocking is unavailable
An unavailable or disabled OEM unlocking option means the phone has not reached the state required for the documented unlock flow. Confirm that you are using the exact device and current build information, that Developer options are available, and that the phone has completed normal setup and connectivity checks. If the switch remains unavailable, stop; do not use an exploit, an unofficial unlock service or a command that claims to override the device’s policy.
The computer does not detect the phone in bootloader mode
Reinstall or update the official Platform-Tools package, check the computer’s device permissions and try a known-good data connection. Keep the phone on its bootloader screen while diagnosing. Do not proceed to an unlock command until the tool and device communicate reliably.
The unlock command is rejected
Read the phone’s displayed reason instead of repeating the command. A rejection commonly means the OEM-unlocking prerequisite is not satisfied or the device is not in the expected bootloader state. Return to Android, correct the prerequisite, and re-enter bootloader mode using the current Pixel 10 procedure.

The phone will not boot after firmware work
Do not immediately flash an older image or switch slots. First identify the last build installed and whether the May 2026 anti-rollback level applies. Google documents a specific risk in which seamless-update fallback selects an older inactive slot; follow the live Pixel 10 instructions for updating the affected slot and applying the corresponding full OTA.

You changed your mind about unlocking
Relocking is not an undo button for an arbitrary modification. AOSP notes that the lock command resets the device. Consider relocking only after restoring compatible official images and confirming that the phone can boot them. Do not improvise a relock step while an unverified custom image is installed.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you recorded the exact Pixel 10 model and current build?
- Have you checked Google’s current May 2026 anti-rollback notice and any newer build-specific warning?
- Is OEM unlocking available in Developer options?
- Is your backup complete and independently verified?
- Are you using the current official Platform-Tools package?
- Do you accept the factory reset and reduced boot security?
- Is your objective stock restoration rather than custom recovery?
- If you need custom recovery, do you have a current maintainer source for this exact model and firmware?
If the last answer is no, unlock only if you have another supported reason, and do not flash a recovery image. The absence of a verified Pixel 10 recovery procedure is a compatibility limit, not a missing command that can safely be guessed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will unlocking my Pixel 10 erase everything?
Yes. The bootloader displays a warning and factory-resets the phone when you confirm the unlock. Back up local files, app data, passkeys and authenticator information before running the unlock flow.

Can I install TWRP on a Pixel 10?
Current support is unresolved. No maintained Pixel 10 recovery image or device-specific consumer installation sequence has been established here, so do not assume that a TWRP build or older Pixel command is compatible.
Can I test recovery with fastboot boot?
Not as a Pixel recovery procedure. AOSP says Pixel devices use recovery-as-boot and do not support fastboot boot for recovery testing. Wait for instructions written for the exact Pixel 10 architecture.
Do I need to unlock the bootloader to restore stock software?
Not if a full OTA package fits your situation. Google describes full OTA sideloading as an easier, safer restoration route that does not require an unlocked bootloader or wipe data. Factory-image flashing is a separate, data-erasing workflow that does require unlocking.

The Bottom Line
Use the documented fastboot flashing unlock flow only after a verified backup, knowing it will factory-reset the Pixel 10 and reduce boot security. Because a maintained Pixel 10 custom-recovery image and safe installation commands are not established, stop after unlocking rather than adapting an older Pixel guide. For stock repair, prefer Google’s full OTA route when applicable, and check the May 2026 anti-rollback instructions before any factory-image or slot operation.
