How to Unlock New Technology Tiers in Graveyard Keeper 2

There is no single tier-up button in Graveyard Keeper 2. New technologies are unlocked branch by branch in the Technology Tree: earn the red, green, or blue Tech Points shown on a node, buy every connected prerequisite, satisfy any reputation, quest, recipe, or location condition, and then purchase the target node. Afterward, check the recipe, workstation, or building blueprint it unlocked, because the technology does not automatically provide the materials or place the workstation.

What “technology tiers” means in Graveyard Keeper 2

Players often describe later nodes as new technology tiers, but the current progression model is a connected Technology Tree rather than a global level meter. Each technology sits in a branch, has a displayed point cost, and may depend on earlier nodes. You advance by following the path to the specific technology you want.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The current-build references identify six branches:

  • Building
  • Metallurgy
  • Farming
  • Theology
  • Anatomy
  • Cooking

Choose a branch according to the recipe, workstation, building, or quest objective you are trying to reach. No source establishes one universally optimal branch order. The fastest route for one player may be different from the best route for another because the required point colors, prerequisites, and story conditions vary by node.

How to unlock a technology: the complete sequence

1. Open the Technology Tree

Open the Technology Tree from the game’s progression interface and select the branch containing the desired node. The technology card is the authority for the live build: it shows the point colors and amounts required, what the node unlocks, and any visible condition attached to it.

2. Read every requirement on the target card

Write down each colored cost before you start grinding. Nodes can require red, green, blue, or a combination of Tech Points. A large point total alone does not guarantee that the purchase is available; the card may also show a missing prerequisite or another gate.

3. Trace the connected prerequisites

Follow the lines leading into the target node. If an earlier technology is still locked, purchase that technology first. The tree’s connections are mandatory: having enough colored points does not bypass a preceding node. Work backward from the desired unlock and make a short checklist of every unpaid node on the route.

4. Check for non-point conditions

Some nodes are controlled by progression systems outside the point wallet. A portrait node is tied to reputation. A hidden node marked with a question mark has its own trigger, such as completing a quest, crafting a particular recipe, or reaching a location. If a node remains unavailable after you have met the displayed point cost, look for one of these conditions instead of repeatedly farming points.

5. Earn the required Tech Points

Use activities that award the colors shown on your target card. Documented sources include gathering or clearing resources, completing workbenches, crafting, performing autopsies, studying new items, and using techbooks. Different activities award different colors and amounts, so confirm the color and quantity in the game’s feedback rather than assuming that every action pays every color.

6. Purchase the node

When the prerequisite links are open and all conditions are met, select the node and spend the displayed Tech Points. Reputation portrait nodes are an exception to normal spending: the reference describes them as unlocking for free once your reputation is high enough, but only when you open the Technology Tree.

7. Inspect what the unlock actually provides

Return to the relevant recipe list, workbench, or construction menu. A technology may reveal a recipe, workstation, or building blueprint without supplying its ingredients, construction materials, or physical placement. Treat the unlock as access to the option, then complete the separate crafting or building requirements.

How to earn red, green, and blue Tech Points

The three colors are separate currencies for technology nodes. The correct farming method is determined by the colors on the node you are pursuing, not by a general assumption that one activity is always best.

  • Gathering and clearing resources: Resource collection and clearing work can award Tech Points. Check the color and amount after each activity so you can tell whether it advances your planned route.
  • Completing workbenches: Finishing workbench-related tasks is another documented source. This can be useful when a branch requires progress through production facilities rather than simple resource collection.
  • Crafting: Craft items when the resulting point color matches your next node. Crafting for a different color may be useful for another branch but will not satisfy a red, green, or blue requirement it does not award.
  • Autopsy: Autopsy actions can produce Tech Points and are especially relevant when your route passes through Anatomy.
  • Studying new items: New-item study is a progression source, so inspect unfamiliar items rather than selling or discarding every one before checking whether it can be studied.
  • Techbooks: Techbooks provide another documented way to add points. Use them with a planned target in mind because the node card, not the book itself, determines how many points you still need.

The interface is the safest source for exact amounts. Community references document the categories of point sources, but they do not establish a permanent color payout for every action across all future builds. Patch changes can alter values, so read the current in-game notification and target card.

Why a node is still locked when you have enough points

A prerequisite technology is missing

This is the most common explanation. Follow every incoming connection to the node and inspect earlier technologies. Unlock the first unpaid node, then continue along the path. A full point balance cannot substitute for a locked predecessor.

The node requires reputation

Nodes showing a character portrait are reputation unlocks. Build the required reputation through the game’s normal progression, then open the Technology Tree again. The reference describes these portrait nodes as free at the required reputation level; they are not purchased by spending a colored point cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The node is hidden behind a question-mark trigger

A hidden “?” node has an individual condition. The documented examples are completing a quest, crafting a recipe, and reaching a location. The game may not reveal the exact trigger until related story or world progress is made, so inspect your active objectives and recently discovered recipes before doing more point farming.

You are looking at a different progression system

Inspiration and talent points are separate from red, green, and blue Tech Points. A talent point, or an Inspiration star, cannot pay a colored technology-node cost. If your talent progression increased but the node did not change, check the three Tech Point totals shown on the Technology Tree.

The game has not refreshed the tree view

Reopen the Technology Tree after gaining reputation or completing a condition. Reputation portrait nodes are specifically described as unlocking when the tree is opened, so checking only the world screen can make a completed condition appear incomplete.

Choosing a branch without wasting points

Because the six branches serve different systems, use a goal-first route rather than trying to unlock every visible node in order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Name the immediate outcome. Decide whether you need a particular recipe, workstation, building blueprint, production step, or quest requirement.
  2. Locate that outcome in the tree. Select its node and record the displayed red, green, and blue costs.
  3. Map the chain. Trace every prerequisite back toward the branch entrance and list the nodes in purchase order.
  4. Separate point gates from activity gates. Mark which steps need colored points and which need reputation, a quest, a recipe, or a location.
  5. Farm only the missing colors. Choose gathering, workbench completion, crafting, autopsy, study, or techbooks based on the colors still required.
  6. Recheck after every unlock. A newly purchased technology may reveal another recipe or workstation requirement that changes your next practical objective.

This approach avoids spending points on attractive side nodes that do not move the project you are currently trying to complete. It also exposes a non-point gate early, before hours of unnecessary grinding.

The six Technology Tree branches

The branch labels tell you which part of the game a node belongs to, but the node card remains the definitive source for its exact cost and prerequisite chain.

Branch How to use it when planning
Building Start here when the objective is a structure or building blueprint, then verify the separate construction materials after purchase.
Metallurgy Use this branch for a metalworking-related objective and follow its connected prerequisites instead of buying unrelated nodes.
Farming Choose this branch when the desired progression concerns cultivation or a farming recipe shown by the target card.
Theology Inspect this branch for theology-related recipes or facilities and check whether reputation or story progress is also displayed.
Anatomy Use the Anatomy route for objectives tied to autopsy or anatomy progression; autopsy is also a documented Tech Point source.
Cooking Follow this branch for cooking-related recipes and confirm the ingredients and workstation needed after unlocking them.

The table describes how to orient yourself by branch name, not a universal order. The game does not establish one best sequence for every save.

Technology Tree versus the talent system

Lazy Bear Games’ official announcement says the sequel keeps progression through the Technology Tree while adding a new talent system. The announcement describes the purpose this way: “We’re also keeping the familiar progression through the Technology Tree, while introducing a new talent system designed to make the grind you love so much more enjoyable.”

That distinction matters when diagnosing a stalled unlock. Talents and Inspiration belong to the newer, separate system; colored Tech Points belong to technology nodes. Spend and track them independently. A talent upgrade can improve your character or work without making a red, green, or blue node affordable, and a technology purchase does not consume a talent point.

Reading a node card accurately

Before committing to a long collection session, treat the selected card as a small planning document. First note every color and number, including a mixed requirement such as red plus green. Then look for visual links leading into the node. A dimmed line or predecessor means the route is incomplete even when your point totals are high.

Next identify whether the card names an output or a condition. “Unlocks” describes the resulting recipe, workstation, or blueprint; a portrait or question mark signals that another system controls access. This distinction prevents a common error: assuming that the number beside a node is the only gate. Write the requirements in two columns—Tech Points and progression conditions—so you know whether the next action should be crafting, reputation building, quest completion, or exploration.

Planning the real cost of an unlock

The displayed node price is only the technology cost. The practical cost includes every prerequisite node on the connected path, plus the ingredients or construction materials needed to use the resulting unlock. If three earlier nodes are required, budget their displayed colors as well; do not reserve points only for the final card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a recipe unlock can require a particular workbench, while a workstation technology can still require a separate build or placement step. For a building blueprint, add the listed construction materials to your preparation list. This two-stage plan—buy access, then fund use—keeps a newly unlocked option from sitting idle.

Common planning mistakes and their fixes

  • Grinding before selecting a target: Choose the destination node first. Otherwise you may collect a color that the route never uses.
  • Buying side nodes too early: Follow the connected path toward the immediate recipe, facility, or quest objective before spending on optional branches.
  • Ignoring hidden conditions: A question-mark node will not open through points alone. Check quests, recipes, and locations when the card provides no normal purchase route.
  • Confusing currencies: Keep Inspiration, talent points, and colored Tech Points in separate notes or mental buckets.
  • Stopping at the purchase: Immediately inspect the destination menu and gather the separate materials, ingredients, or workstation requirements.
  • Trusting an old planner blindly: Fan-maintained planners are useful for relationships, but a patch can change costs or conditions. Confirm the live card before spending.

What happens after a technology unlock

Technology access is not the same as completion of the project it enables. Check the destination where the new option should appear:

  • Recipe: Open the appropriate crafting interface and read the ingredient list, quantities, and required workstation.
  • Workbench: Confirm whether the station must be built, repaired, placed, or supplied separately.
  • Building blueprint: Review the construction menu and gather every listed material; buying the technology does not place the structure.
  • Quest-related unlock: Return to the objective and verify that the game recognizes the newly available recipe or facility.

If nothing appears, first confirm that you purchased the intended node rather than only a prerequisite, then check the branch or menu associated with the unlocked item. Some unlocks change what is available at a specific workbench instead of adding a free-standing object to the world.

A practical troubleshooting checklist

Use this order when a technology remains locked:

  1. Open the target node and read all displayed colored costs.
  2. Follow every incoming line and purchase missing prerequisite nodes.
  3. Look for a portrait, which indicates a reputation condition.
  4. Look for a question mark and investigate quests, recipes, and locations.
  5. Confirm that you are counting Tech Points rather than Inspiration or talent points.
  6. Reopen the Technology Tree after completing reputation or story progress.
  7. Once the node unlocks, inspect the separate recipe, workstation, or building requirements.

If the checklist does not resolve the lock, compare the live node card with your assumptions. Community planners can help you see prerequisite relationships, but the in-game card takes precedence after a patch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many technologies are there?

A fan-maintained planner reports 236 technologies across the six branches. That is an extracted community reference for the current game build, not an official statistic from the developer, and it may change with patches. Use the number as an indication of the tree’s scale rather than a permanent completion target.

The official announcement archive records the September 22, 2026 launch and progression-related patch notes through October 6, 2026. Detailed node behavior, point sources, and the 236-node total come from unofficial reference material, so verify patch-sensitive costs and conditions in your live game. The displayed node card is the reliable answer for your edition and update.

Fastest reliable method for a specific unlock

For a single urgent objective, the most efficient method is not to farm every activity. Select the exact technology, calculate the prerequisite chain, and target only the missing colors. Complete any reputation, quest, recipe, or location trigger as soon as it becomes available, then return to the tree and buy the nodes in order. Finally, gather the materials for the newly exposed recipe or blueprint.

This method works because it treats the Technology Tree as a dependency map rather than a level bar. It also prevents the two most expensive mistakes: grinding the wrong point color and assuming that an unlocked option arrives with the resources needed to use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a single button that unlocks the next technology tier?

No. Graveyard Keeper 2 uses connected branches in the Technology Tree. Select the node you want, earn its displayed red, green, or blue Tech Points, unlock all connected prerequisites, and satisfy any separate gate.

Why is a node locked even though I have enough Tech Points?

Check the incoming prerequisite links first. If those are complete, look for a portrait reputation gate or a hidden question-mark condition involving a quest, recipe, or location. Reopen the tree after completing the condition.

Do Inspiration or talent points pay for technology nodes?

No. Inspiration and talent points belong to a separate progression system. Technology nodes use their own red, green, and blue Tech Points.

What activities give Tech Points?

Documented sources include gathering or clearing resources, completing workbenches, crafting, autopsies, studying new items, and using techbooks. The color and amount vary, so check the current in-game feedback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do portrait nodes cost colored points?

The reference describes portrait nodes as reputation unlocks that become free once the required reputation is reached. Open the Technology Tree afterward so the game can refresh the node.

What does a question-mark node require?

Each hidden node has an individual trigger. Known examples include completing a quest, crafting a recipe, or reaching a location. Investigate the related objective instead of farming points indefinitely.

Does buying a technology give me its materials or build the workstation?

No. The purchase reveals access to a recipe, workstation, or blueprint. Ingredients, construction materials, placement, and other use requirements must still be completed separately.

How many technologies are in the tree?

A fan-maintained planner reports 236 across six branches in its current extracted build. It is not an official permanent total and may change after updates, so use the live game tree for your save.
