On a Googlebook with a Glowbar, the reported way to start the hidden music-reactive light show is to open Settings > Apps > App Manager > View all apps, show system apps, search for Glow Bar Disco, then open the app. Chrome Unboxed reported this route on September 26, 2026, attributing it to a conversation with a Google product executive at the launch event. The steps have not been independently verified across retail devices, models, or software builds.
How to open Glow Bar Disco
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > App Manager.
- Select View all apps. Make sure system apps are visible; the app is reported to be pre-installed as a system package.
- Search for Glow Bar Disco. Some coverage styles the name as “Glowbar Disco.”
- Select the app entry and tap Open.
This is the access route reported by Chrome Unboxed, which said it spoke directly with Alexander Kuscher, Google’s Senior Director of Product for Laptops and Tablets, at the launch event. The outlet says the route does not require Developer mode or Linux terminal commands.

What the light show does
Chrome Unboxed reports that Glow Bar Disco makes the Glowbar’s colors and animations react to active audio output, including music in Spotify or YouTube Music and audio from local video files. It also describes additional animation modes, including one reminiscent of Knight Rider. These details come from the outlet’s reporting rather than independent testing.
Android Authority separately reported seeing the light show sync with audio during a hands-on session. That supports the existence of the effect, while the later Chrome Unboxed article supplies the reported access steps. Android Authority’s earlier coverage said the app’s location had not yet been disclosed.

What the Glowbar does outside the disco app
Google describes the Glowbar as an at-a-glance indicator for battery life and charging status on its official Googlebook product page. Other functions described in launch coverage include battery and charging animations, a boot animation, and pulses tied to Gemini activity. Android Authority also reported ambient activity indications, including microphone activity. Those functions are distinct from opening the music-synced app.

The reported feature is for Googlebook laptops equipped with a Glowbar. Chrome Unboxed says Glowbar is present across the launch devices from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Google’s product page lists those manufacturers and shows a starting price of $899; that is Google’s listed starting price for the lineup, not a current retailer quote or an average price.

Coverage does not establish that the menu route works on every retail unit or operating-system build, or that every configuration exposes the app under exactly the same spelling. Android Authority reported launch-period dates of October 4, 2026, for U.S. retail and October 5 for Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia; those dates are not a live check of current stock or availability.

Google has also been reported as intending to open Glowbar APIs to third-party developers, but the cited coverage provides no schedule or documentation. Treat that as a future plan, not a currently available way to control the light bar.
