Once there, Golden Walnuts pay for access, travel links, and services. Start by opening the area you need; prioritize the west-side farm and farmhouse if you plan to grow crops or stay overnight, and the Volcano if you want to reach the Forge.
How to get to Ginger Island
Ginger Island is a late-game area reached from Willy’s boat after you complete the Community Center or Joja route. Arrival opens only the island’s initial areas; parrots and other progression gates control access to additional regions and facilities. See the Ginger Island overview for the island’s areas and access points.

The island is easier to navigate as a set of regions than as one large destination:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- South: The dock and initial hub.
- East: The jungle, where you meet Leo.
- North: The Volcano, Dig Site, and Island Field Office.
- West: The farm and several activities; pay a parrot 10 Golden Walnuts to open access.
Later upgrades add services such as the beach resort and Parrot Express. Reaching the island does not automatically unlock all of these areas.

How Golden Walnuts work
Golden Walnuts are the island’s shared multiplayer currency. The Stardew Valley Wiki lists 130 available in total, earned through activities including exploration, puzzles, farming, fishing, mining, and combat. Parrots accept them for island upgrades. The wiki lists 116 walnuts in costs for island upgrades and says 100 walnuts open Qi’s Walnut Room; check the prompts in your game for current costs and prerequisites. See the Golden Walnut reference.
There is no official best order for spending them. Choose based on what you want to do next:
| Upgrade or destination | Cost | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Open the west | 10 walnuts | Access to the farm region. |
| Repair the Island Farmhouse | 20 walnuts | A place to sleep, cook, and ship items on the island. |
| Build the Dig Site bridge | 10 walnuts | Access to the Dig Site and Field Office area. |
| Unlock the Island Trader | 10 walnuts, after buying the farmhouse | Access to a merchant who barters rather than accepting gold. |
| Build the Parrot Express | 10 walnuts | A faster way to travel between island locations. |
| Build the beach resort | 20 walnuts | Opens the resort. |
| Build the permanent Volcano bridge | 5 walnuts | A lasting way across the entrance lava. |
| Build the Farm Obelisk | 20 walnuts, after the farmhouse and mailbox | Adds the Farm Obelisk. |
These are listed costs, not a ranking. For the west, the 10-walnut access payment comes first; if island farming and overnight stays matter to you, the farmhouse is a practical next expense. If repeated travel is the nuisance, consider the Parrot Express or permanent Volcano bridge when available. The Island Farmhouse page describes farmhouse-related costs and prerequisites.

How to use the west-side farm
The west-side farm grows crops regardless of the mainland season, much like the Greenhouse. It has room for crops and fruit trees, and crows do not spawn there, so scarecrows are unnecessary. This makes the farm useful for crops that would otherwise be season-limited, but it is not automatically the best choice for every player.
Repair the farmhouse for overnight stays and shipping
Repairing the Island Farmhouse costs 20 Golden Walnuts. It includes a kitchen, a Tropical Bed for each farmer, and a shipping bin, allowing you to stay overnight and ship items without returning to the mainland. You can add a mailbox for five walnuts; the Farm Obelisk costs 20 more after the farmhouse and mailbox are built.
Collect walnuts with the Gourmand Frog
After the farmhouse is repaired, the Gourmand Frog gives a sequence of crop tasks. Grow each requested crop to maturity, then show it to the frog before harvesting:
- Grow a Melon and show the mature crop.
- Grow Wheat and show the mature crop.
- Grow Garlic and show the mature crop.
The frog rewards five Golden Walnuts for each crop, for 15 total. The crops must be shown before you harvest them. The Ginger Island overview covers this farm-side activity.

The Volcano Dungeon is at the island’s north end. It has 10 floors, with the Forge on floor 10. At the entrance, use a watering can to pour a path across the lava river; the crossing resets overnight. A steel-or-better watering can can span it in one use, according to the Volcano Dungeon reference.
- Bring a watering can before entering the Volcano.
- Pour water across the entrance lava to make a walkable path.
- Progress through the dungeon toward floor 10 and the Forge.
- After reaching the Forge and opening the exit shortcut, consider paying the parrot five Golden Walnuts for a permanent entrance bridge.
The Forge is where you upgrade tools and weapons using Cinder Shards. If you expect to return often, the permanent bridge removes the need to recreate the entrance crossing on each visit. Otherwise, using the watering can avoids spending those walnuts.

What the Field Office, Island Trader, and Walnut Room do
Island Field Office: fossils and surveys
Rescue Professor Snail from the nearby cave to activate the Field Office at the Dig Site. Donate fossil pieces and complete Island Surveys to earn Golden Walnut rewards. This is a collection and survey activity, separate from trading. The Field Office reference covers its collections and surveys.
Island Trader: barter goods
The bluebird Island Trader is in the north. After buying the farmhouse, spend 10 Golden Walnuts to unlock the trader. The trader accepts barter goods rather than gold; inventory includes island-themed goods and may rotate. See the Island Trader page for the merchant’s details.

Qi’s Walnut Room: completion and challenges
At 100 Golden Walnuts, you can open Qi’s Walnut Room. It contains the perfection tracker and connects to Qi Gems and special challenges, so it is a later destination for completion-focused play rather than a necessary first stop. The Qi’s Walnut Room reference explains its role.
Choose upgrades around your next goal
- Want to farm or stay overnight? Open the west, then weigh the farmhouse’s 20-walnut cost against its kitchen, beds, and shipping bin.
- Want to explore the Volcano repeatedly? Carry a watering can for the entrance or spend five walnuts on the permanent bridge after reaching the Forge and opening the shortcut.
- Want faster movement around the island? Consider the Parrot Express when its 10-walnut upgrade is available.
- Want to focus on collectibles and completion? Work through the Field Office and eventually save toward Qi’s Walnut Room.
The costs and effects above describe the listed game mechanics; they do not establish one universally optimal spending order. Costs and prerequisites can be version-sensitive, so use the in-game parrot prompts as the final check.
