There is no verified, permanently accurate list of “every” Vampire Survivors character that applies to every installation. Character totals differ between published references, and DLC, secret characters, and later updates change what appears in a roster. The reliable method is to open your game’s Unlocks and Secrets menus, then follow the condition shown for your current build and owned expansions.
This guide explains how to interpret those conditions and documents representative base-game, secret, and DLC routes. It identifies whether a requirement is cumulative, must be completed in one run, can span several runs, and whether a separate gold purchase is required. Use the in-game text as the final authority whenever it differs from an older guide.

How the character-unlock system works
Vampire Survivors uses several different unlock systems rather than one universal rule. A character may be tied to a progression counter, a single-run challenge, a stage object, an evolved weapon, a relic, a boss, a hidden input, or an expansion-specific objective. Recognizing the type of requirement is the fastest way to plan the right run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Ordinary characters: Their conditions are normally listed in the Unlocks menu. Common patterns include reaching a weapon level, recovering a specified amount of health, earning gold, defeating enemies, surviving for a time with Curse, opening a coffin, or obtaining an evolution.
- Secret characters: Their clues appear in the Secrets menu and may require a spell, a timed button press, or a character-specific sequence rather than a conventional milestone.
- DLC characters: Their routes use the expansion’s stages, gates, coffins, weapons, enemies, and bosses. You need access to the relevant expansion for those conditions to apply.
Completing a condition does not always make the character immediately playable. Many standard characters become available only after you spend in-game gold on the character-selection screen. The menu normally makes that purchase prompt clear, but a completed Unlocks entry and an unlocked roster slot are not always the same event.

- Play as an immortal Successor - You are a Successor, an immortal warrior empowered by the gods Lu, Ashuran, and Harnia. When you die, you revive with your gear, runes, and unlocks intact and head back out from Cliffshire to push further into corrupted zones. Choose your Successor - You'll start as the Spellblade and unlock additional Successors as you progress. Each has its own skill tree, weapons, and playstyle
- Playable Classes - Spellblade-Element-focused hybrid with close and mid-range attacks built around fire, frost, and lightning. Berserker - Heavy melee bruiser that trades its own HP and positioning for huge damage and armor. Hunter - Mobile ranged fighter using thrown weapons, poison, and beast abilities to apply damage over time and control space.
- 2D Roguelite Hack-and-Slash Combat - Combat revolves around precise dodges, reading telegraphed attacks, and committing to aggressive combos. Areas are multi-layered 2D stages that reshuffle enemy layouts, hazards, and loot each run. When you fall, you lose gold and temporary bonuses, but your gear and runes stay with you and form the base of your next attempt.
- Loot, Runes, and Artifacts - Hunt Elites and Bosses to claim Rune Stones, then craft them into Legendary and Mythic equipment. Runes and class skill trees interact to define your build, while artifacts you pick up mid-run stack into powerful synergies.

Start with the correct menu and prerequisite chain
- Open Unlocks. Find the character entry or the missing milestone. The wording usually tells you whether the requirement is a counter, an item, an evolution, a stage interaction, or a survival objective.
- Check the content scope. Determine whether the entry belongs to the base game or a named DLC. An expansion character can depend on an expansion stage, gate, enemy, weapon, or relic that is absent from the base game.
- Trace prerequisites in order. A boss can unlock a gate; the gate can expose an item; that item can enable an evolution; and the evolution can unlock another character. Do not skip an earlier step simply because the final character’s name is visible.
- Determine the run requirement. Some counters accumulate across multiple runs, while other entries explicitly require one run. Treat “in a single run” as a hard limit, not as an optional suggestion.
- Check the character screen after completion. If the condition is marked complete but the character is still locked, look for a gold purchase prompt.
- Use Secrets for hidden routes. Secret entries can involve typed spells or timed inputs that are not presented as ordinary progression counters. Verify the controls and any prerequisite character in your installed version.
Write down the exact wording before starting. A requirement such as “total” generally indicates account-wide progress, while “in one run,” “with [character],” or “on [stage]” narrows the attempt. If the menu names a gate, boss, or collectible, treat that object as a prerequisite rather than an optional detail.
Representative base-game character unlocks
The following examples illustrate the main base-game requirement families. They are documented examples, not a claim that they constitute the current complete roster.
| Character | Required action | Tracking scope | Gold purchase after condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lama Ladonna | Survive at least 20 minutes with Curse above its base value at the end of the run. Curse can come from sources other than the permanent Curse PowerUp. | One run; the condition is checked at the end. | Yes |
| Poe Ratcho | Raise Garlic to level 7. | Weapon-level milestone; the documented condition does not require a specified cumulative total. | Yes |
| Suor Clerici | Recover 1,000 HP in total. | Cumulative across runs. | Yes |
| Dommario | Obtain more than 5,000 gold in one run. | Single run. | Yes |
| Krochi Freetto | Defeat 100,000 enemies in total. | Cumulative across runs. | Yes |
| Pugnala Provola | Find and open her coffin in Mad Forest. | Stage-specific interaction. | The documented route describes the coffin as the unlock action. |
| Iguana Gallo Valletto | Obtain Infinite Corridor. | Evolution/relic milestone. | Yes |
| Divano Thelma | Obtain Crimson Shroud. | Evolution/relic milestone. | Yes |
| Queen Sigma | Complete every entry in the 1.0 Collection. | Collection completion; the documented Collection scope excludes DLC items. | The documented route does not describe a separate purchase. |
How to handle cumulative counters
Cumulative requirements are designed to survive the end of a run. For Suor Clerici, healing totals from separate runs contribute to the 1,000-HP target. Krochi Freetto’s enemy requirement works the same way for the 100,000 total. If the Unlocks menu does not mark a counter complete, continue playing and check the entry after returning to the main menu. Do not restart under the assumption that one exceptionally long run is mandatory unless the text explicitly says so.
Cumulative does not necessarily mean that progress appears after every hit or pickup. Finish the run normally, allow the results screen to appear, and then revisit Unlocks. A run abandoned before its results are recorded may not be the best way to verify a counter.
How to handle one-run requirements
Dommario’s gold target must be exceeded in one run; previous runs do not combine to reach it. Lama’s requirement is also evaluated by a single run: survive at least 20 minutes and finish with Curse above its base value. When an entry contains wording such as “in a single run,” plan the entire build around that attempt rather than assuming progress will carry over.
For a one-run objective, avoid ending the run immediately after the apparent milestone if the wording includes an end-of-run check. Lama’s condition specifically looks at the Curse state by the end, so the final state matters in addition to the elapsed time. Likewise, Dommario’s threshold is “over” 5,000 gold, not merely exactly 5,000.
Weapon-level and evolution requirements
Poe’s route is a level milestone for Garlic. Infinite Corridor and Crimson Shroud are evolution/relic milestones used by Iguana Gallo Valletto and Divano Thelma. For these entries, confirm that the final item was actually obtained during the run and that the Unlocks menu recorded it. A partial weapon level or an unevolved component does not satisfy an evolution-based entry.

Evolution requirements can be multi-step even when the character entry names only the final weapon. Read the item’s own unlock text, obtain the required components, and complete the evolution before leaving the run. If the character entry remains locked, verify that you obtained the named final evolution rather than a similarly named weapon or a component from another map.

Coffin requirements
Pugnala Provola’s documented route is to locate and open her coffin in Mad Forest. Coffin paths are stage interactions, so select the named stage and search for the object rather than trying to satisfy a general account-wide counter. DLCs use the same pattern with their own maps and coffins.
A coffin objective is neither a weapon-level grind nor a lifetime total. The relevant question is whether the correct stage object was found and opened. If a coffin is not visible, check that you selected the stage named by the entry and that any preceding gate or boss requirement has been completed.
Secret characters: use the Secrets menu, not ordinary counters
Secret characters deliberately hide their procedures behind indirect clues. The documented examples include:
- Exdash: enter the unlock spell shown by the secret-character procedure.
- Toastie: defeat the specified special enemy, then press the timed input. Exdash is a prerequisite.
- Smith IV: follow a timed sequence of menu and in-run inputs, with the documented route depending on the preceding secret-character path.
Exact keystrokes and timing can vary with platform, control scheme, and game version. Open the Secrets menu in your installation and verify the current clue before attempting a sequence. If the game does not react, check that the prerequisite character is unlocked, that you are using the correct input device, and that the timed action is being performed during the specified part of the run or menu sequence.
Secret procedures are especially vulnerable to version and control-layout mistakes. A sequence copied from a keyboard guide may not map directly to a controller, and a timed input may only work after the named enemy is defeated or while the game is in the specified menu. Treat the menu’s clue as an ordered procedure: prerequisite first, trigger event second, input third, then confirmation in Secrets or the character screen.
DLC unlocks follow expansion-specific rules
Each expansion adds its own stages, enemies, gates, coffins, weapons, and bosses. A base-game route cannot substitute for an expansion requirement. The documented DLC families include Legacy of the Moonspell, Tides of the Foscari, Emergency Meeting, Operation Guns, and Ode to Castlevania.
Common DLC patterns are opening a coffin on the expansion map, evolving a weapon introduced by that expansion, defeating a named enemy, or reaching a high enemy-defeat total with a specified character. Follow the dependency chain in the Unlocks menu: an expansion boss may open a gate, and the gate may be required before the weapon or collectible for a later character can appear.

Ode to Castlevania examples
A Nintendo Life guide dated 17 December 2024 documented 20 characters for Ode to Castlevania at that time. Those procedures are useful examples, but later game builds can change names, requirements, or controls. Confirm the text shown in your own menus.
| Character | Documented requirement | Run and prerequisite notes |
|---|---|---|
| Alucard | Defeat Doppelganger while playing Trevor Belmont in the Ode to Castlevania stage. | Character-specific boss encounter in the DLC stage. |
| Christopher Belmont | Evolve Alucard’s Alucart Sworb. | Requires the named DLC weapon and its evolution. |
| Charlotte Aulin | Collect seven Mirrors of Truth after unlocking the Capra Gate. | The guide associates Capra Gate with defeating Paranoia at the end of the Library. |
| Hector | Collect seven Karma Coins after unlocking the Scorpion Gate. | The guide associates Scorpion Gate with defeating Puppet Master. |
| Julius Belmont | Open the second coffin in the Ode to Castlevania map. | Stage-specific coffin interaction. |
| Death | Fight Death with the fully evolved Clock Tower while playing Richter Belmont. | The guide describes Clock Tower as an evolution of four mechanical weapons found in the Clock Tower area. |
| Master Librarian | Buy every item from the Master Librarian shop at least once. | The guide says purchases can span multiple runs. |
Reading the Ode to Castlevania dependency paths
Charlotte Aulin and Hector demonstrate the gate-and-collectible pattern. First defeat the boss associated with the gate, then return to the relevant area and collect the required set of seven items. Death demonstrates a character-and-build lock: Richter Belmont, four mechanical weapons, their fully evolved Clock Tower, and the Death encounter all matter. Master Librarian demonstrates a multi-run shop requirement, so do not assume every purchase has to happen in one attempt.
These examples also show why a short checklist is useful. For Charlotte, mark Paranoia, Capra Gate, and seven Mirrors of Truth as separate milestones. For Hector, mark Puppet Master, Scorpion Gate, and seven Karma Coins. For Death, mark Richter, all four mechanical weapons, the completed Clock Tower, and the encounter. Completing only the final-looking step may not satisfy the chain.

| Route type | Where to verify it | Progress model | Main pitfall |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counter | Unlocks | Usually cumulative across runs | Assuming every counter must be finished in one run |
| Single-run challenge | Unlocks | All clauses must be satisfied in one attempt | Missing an end-of-run condition or exact threshold |
| Stage interaction | Unlocks plus map | Find a coffin, gate, or named object | Playing the wrong stage or skipping a prerequisite gate |
| Evolution | Unlocks and item entries | Obtain the named final evolution | Stopping at a component or unevolved weapon |
| Secret input | Secrets | Ordered, control-sensitive action | Using outdated keys or missing a prerequisite character |
| DLC chain | Expansion-specific menus | Boss, gate, item, and character dependencies | Applying a base-game method to an expansion entry |
The game does not provide one universal cost rule. Some characters require a gold purchase after their condition, while other documented routes describe the coffin or collection action as the unlock itself. Check the character-selection screen rather than assuming that every newly completed entry has the same price or purchase step.
Why a “complete roster” list can become inaccurate
Online results have reported conflicting totals, including 165 and 183 official playable characters, without a verified explanation for the difference. The discrepancy can reflect different update versions, DLC ownership, secret characters, or definitions of “playable,” but the available references do not establish which explanation is correct. Do not use either number as the current total for your installation.
The character reference used for these examples is a secondary guide derived from wiki material and covers a bounded set of procedures. It also flags at least one underlying procedure as undocumented. The current official wiki character target was not accessible through the available search, and the dated Castlevania guide cannot certify later builds. Your installed game’s Unlocks and Secrets menus therefore remain the final authority.
For a genuinely exhaustive checklist, define the scope first: base game only, every owned DLC, secret characters, and any other playable content shown by your build. Then count the entries visible in your own menus. That approach avoids mixing a DLC-inclusive total with a base-game list or treating a historical guide as a current roster.

Troubleshooting an unlock that did not register
- Wrong scope: Make sure you selected the named DLC stage and own the expansion associated with the entry.
- Missing prerequisite: Check whether a gate, boss, coffin, relic, weapon evolution, or prerequisite character must be completed first.
- Wrong run type: A single-run requirement cannot be assembled from several attempts; a cumulative counter may need multiple completed runs before it updates.
- Incomplete item state: Verify that the weapon reached its final evolution or that the required number of collectibles was obtained.
- Purchase still required: Return to character selection and look for the gold purchase after the unlock condition is marked complete.
- Secret input failure: Recheck the control layout, timing, platform, and prerequisite character in the Secrets menu.
- Version mismatch: If a guide’s sequence conflicts with your menu text, follow the in-game entry. Older procedures may no longer match the current build.
- Unconfirmed completion: Leave the run through the normal results flow, reopen the relevant menu, and confirm that the entry changed before starting another attempt.
A practical checklist for clearing your remaining entries
- Record the exact wording of each locked entry in Unlocks or Secrets.
- Label it as a counter, one-run challenge, stage interaction, evolution, boss encounter, shop task, or hidden input.
- Mark whether it belongs to the base game or a named expansion.
- Complete prerequisite gates, bosses, characters, and items before attempting the final condition.
- For counters, finish the run normally so progress is saved; for one-run objectives, satisfy every clause in the same attempt.
- Reopen the menu to confirm the entry changed.
- Buy the character with gold when the game presents a purchase prompt.
- Update your checklist after patches or DLC releases, because a previously complete external list may no longer describe your build.
For difficult chains, keep a separate line for every dependency instead of writing only the character’s name. For example: “boss defeated,” “gate open,” “seven collectibles found,” and “character purchased.” This makes it clear whether a failed attempt missed the final objective or an earlier prerequisite.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to unlock every character in one run?
No. Some requirements are cumulative across runs, such as Suor Clerici’s 1,000 total HP recovered and Krochi Freetto’s 100,000 total enemy defeats. Others, including Dommario’s gold target and Lama’s survival condition, are evaluated within one run. Follow the wording in Unlocks.
Why is a character still locked after I completed the requirement?
Many ordinary characters still require a separate gold purchase. Return to character selection and look for the purchase prompt. If there is no prompt, recheck prerequisites, the stage or DLC scope, and whether the final item or evolution was actually recorded.
Can I use Curse from something other than the permanent Curse PowerUp for Lama?
The documented condition allows Curse sources besides the permanent Curse PowerUp. You still need to survive at least 20 minutes and finish the run with Curse above its base value.

The documented 1.0 Collection route excludes DLC items. Confirm the Collection definition in your own build, because later content and menu wording can change the practical scope.
Are secret-character key sequences universal?
Do not assume so. Secret procedures are sensitive to game version, platform, controls, timing, and prerequisite characters. Use the current Secrets menu and verify the exact input sequence for your installation.
Can DLC unlocks be completed on a base-game map?
Usually not. DLC routes use expansion-specific stages, gates, coffins, enemies, weapons, or bosses. Select the named expansion content and complete its prerequisite chain.
Can a shop requirement span several runs?
Some can. The documented Master Librarian route says every shop item can be bought at least once across multiple runs. Check the specific entry rather than assuming all purchases must occur in one attempt.
What is the current total number of characters?
No single total is confirmed for every installation. Published results have reported different figures, and the difference is not explained well enough to use either as an authoritative current count. Count the entries shown in your own Unlocks and Secrets menus, including only the DLC you own.

What “every character” means for your copy
The meaningful target is not a universal number; it is every entry available in your installed version, including only the DLC you own and the secret characters your menus expose. Base-game examples such as Garlic level 7, cumulative healing, enemy totals, coffins, and major evolutions show how ordinary progression works. Secret entries require separate menu clues, while DLC entries add expansion-specific chains.
Use the menus to discover the exact current roster, classify each condition, and follow prerequisites in order. Record whether the action is cumulative or single-run, whether it requires a named character or stage, and whether gold remains to be paid. That method stays reliable across updates even when an online “all characters” list no longer matches your build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to unlock every character in one run?
No. Cumulative goals can span runs, while entries marked as single-run objectives must be completed in one attempt.
Why is a character still locked after I met the condition?
Many standard characters require a separate gold purchase. Also verify prerequisites, DLC scope, and that the final evolution or collectible was recorded.
Are secret-character inputs the same on every platform?
Not necessarily. Check the current Secrets menu for your platform, controls, timing, and prerequisite characters.
What is the current total number of Vampire Survivors characters?
No single total is confirmed for every installation. Count the entries in your own Unlocks and Secrets menus and include only the DLC you own.
The Bottom Line
To unlock every character available in your copy, use Unlocks and Secrets as your authoritative checklist. Separate cumulative counters from single-run challenges, follow DLC gates and prerequisites in order, complete the named evolution or stage interaction, and buy characters with gold when prompted. Because versions and expansions change the roster, your menus—not an undated total—define what “every” means.
