This guide covers the 2026 remaster that combines DYNASTY WARRIORS 3 and DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Xtreme Legends. Nintendo describes the release as having more than 40 officers, while Xtreme Legends adds stories for seven officers, including Lu Bu, Meng Huo and Yuan Shao.

What actually unlocks characters
Character progression is tied to completed Musou Mode campaigns. Free Mode battles do not satisfy the campaign-clear requirements in the current route guide. You can play on any difficulty; the guide reports that difficulty does not affect whether an unlock registers.

There are three kinds of requirements:
- Faction clears: complete Musou Mode once or twice with officers from Wei, Shu or Wu.
- Battle objectives: defeat a named officer, achieve a KO threshold, keep an ally alive or trigger a recruitment event.
- Specific-character clears: finish Musou Mode with a named set of officers to open Nuwa or Fuxi.
When a requirement depends on an event, finish the stage after completing the objective. Leaving early, allowing a required officer to fall, or replaying only in Free Mode will not advance the relevant condition.

It helps to distinguish unlocking an officer from clearing Musou Mode as that officer. For example, the six-run route makes Cao Cao and Sun Jian available, but Fuxi’s requirements still call for completed campaigns as Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Jian. A character becoming playable does not automatically count as a campaign clear in that character’s name.
Starting officers
The remaster begins with nine playable officers. They are divided evenly among Shu, Wei and Wu:

Use one of these officers for your first campaign. The six-run route below deliberately chooses officers whose campaigns also satisfy event requirements for later unlocks.

GuideLVL’s route uses two clears for each faction. The “reported unlocks” column reflects when the guide says officers appear; some are awarded during a campaign and others after its completion. The route is optimized so that He Fei, Fan Castle, Wu District Conquest, Nanman and the Shu campaign needed for Jiang Wei are covered without unnecessary detours.

Think of this as a route through the regular roster, not a promise that every single officer is unlocked solely by the six campaign completions. Its efficiency comes from combining faction progress with stage objectives: the first Wei run groups several early battle unlocks, Zhao Yun’s campaign handles Shu- and Nanman-related objectives, and Gan Ning’s Wu run covers two important battles. A run that skips those objectives may still advance a faction-clear requirement but leave stage-gated officers locked.
The comparison between routes is therefore not just “six runs versus more runs.” A less planned route can require replaying a particular stage in Musou Mode or adding a campaign because an event condition was missed. GuideLVL’s assignments are useful because they align the campaign officer, the faction clear, and the relevant stage objectives. Difficulty is not a shortcut or a penalty according to that guide, so choose a setting that lets you reliably complete the objectives rather than changing difficulty in hope of affecting eligibility.
Run 1: Xiahou Dun and the first Wei clear
Start with Xiahou Dun. This campaign is the most efficient opening because its Hu Lao Gate and Guan Du objectives can be completed while you are already pursuing the first Wei clear. The route reports Zhang Jiao, Diao Chan, Lu Bu, Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao and Gan Ning becoming available during this run. Completing the campaign then adds Xu Zhu, Zhen Ji, Sima Yi and Ziluan.

At Guan Du, prioritize Yan Liang and Wen Chou yourself before Guan Yu reaches either target. These objectives are easy to overlook if you focus only on clearing the campaign.
Run 2: Zhen Ji and the second Wei clear
Choose Zhen Ji for the second Wei campaign. A second completed Wei Musou Mode campaign is the threshold reported for Cao Cao and Xu Huang. Using Zhen Ji also gives you one of the named clears required for Nuwa later.

There is a source disagreement worth keeping in mind: Destructoid’s broad unlock table differs from GuideLVL on some eligibility details, including Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang. The optimized route and detailed conditions in this guide follow GuideLVL’s more specific instructions; they are not official publisher rules. In particular, GuideLVL excludes Zhen Ji from the officers who can be used for Sima Yi’s unlock, so Xiahou Dun’s first campaign is the route’s qualifying Wei clear for him.
Run 3: Zhao Yun and the first Shu clear
Use Zhao Yun for the first Shu campaign. Protect Pang Tong during Assault on Cheng Du and defeat Zhang Ren early; those actions are needed for Pang Tong. The run also covers the Mt. Ding Jun requirement for Xiahou Yuan and the Nanman objectives for Meng Huo and Zhurong. After the first Shu clear, the route reports Zhuge Liang, Ma Chao and Wei Yan.

Do not treat “first Shu clear” as interchangeable with any stage completion: the faction rewards require completing Musou Mode. The route names Zhao Yun because his campaign also provides the relevant battle opportunities. For Zhuge Liang, the more specific condition reported by GuideLVL is to clear as a Shu officer other than Zhang Fei or Pang Tong.
Run 4: Gan Ning and the first Wu clear
Gan Ning is recommended because this campaign naturally reaches He Fei and Fan Castle. Complete the He Fei conditions for Zhang Liao and Sun Quan, and finish Fan Castle without Lu Meng falling. The route reports Lu Xun and Da Qiao after the campaign, with Zhang Liao, Sun Quan and Lu Meng appearing during it.
These checks are not identical: Zhang Liao requires that you defeat him at He Fei, while Sun Quan’s condition is to make Cao Cao retreat there. At Fan Castle, Lu Meng must remain alive through the stage finish. Completing one objective does not imply that the other two have registered.
Run 5: Da Qiao and the second Wu clear
Da Qiao’s campaign handles Taishi Ci’s recruitment at Wu District Conquest and counts toward Nuwa. The second Wu clear is also the point at which the route reports Xiao Qiao, Sun Jian and Sun Ce. If you have not yet completed the Nuwa conditions, this run supplies Da Qiao’s required clear.
For Taishi Ci, defeat Liu Yong at Wu District Conquest and confirm the recruitment event before finishing the battle. The condition is not simply to reach or clear the stage. Da Qiao is also a useful selection because a completed campaign as her satisfies one of Nuwa’s four named-character requirements.
Run 6: Zhuge Liang and the second Shu clear
Finish with Zhuge Liang. This campaign is required for Jiang Wei in the reported route and supplies the second Shu clear. It also avoids adding a separate campaign solely to finish the regular roster, because the route reports Jiang Wei, Liu Bei and Huang Zhong from this run.
Remember, Liu Bei’s availability is not the same as a completed Musou Mode clear as Liu Bei. That separate distinction matters when you move on to Fuxi. The six runs are the regular-roster route; the secret-character campaign requirements are additional work even when those characters are already unlocked.
Faction and campaign conditions
The following conditions are the detailed requirements attributed to GuideLVL. They are more specific than the broad unlock summaries on some other current guides, so follow the named exceptions exactly.

Stage-specific unlocks
Yellow Turban Rebellion: Zhang Jiao
Defeat Zhang Jiao, Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang in the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Make sure all three defeats register before completing the stage.
Hu Lao Gate: Diao Chan, Lu Bu and Dong Zhuo
Hu Lao Gate contains three separate checks. Defeat Diao Chan for her unlock, and reach 1,000 KOs for Lu Bu. Dong Zhuo requires defeating both Lu Bu and Diao Chan in the same Hu Lao Gate battle. The route guide says these can be grouped into one attempt: defeat the named officers, reach the KO target, then complete the stage.
Guan Du: Yuan Shao
At Guan Du, defeat Yan Liang and Wen Chou yourself before Guan Yu reaches either one. Do not let the allied sequence defeat them first; the timing of your own kills is part of the condition.
Assault on Cheng Du: Pang Tong
Pang Tong must survive Assault on Cheng Du, and Zhang Ren must be defeated early. If Pang Tong falls, replay the stage in the same Musou Mode campaign rather than relying on a Free Mode repeat.
Mt. Ding Jun: Xiahou Yuan
Play a Shu Musou Mode campaign and defeat Xiahou Yuan at Mt. Ding Jun. This is why Zhao Yun’s first Shu run is preferable to an arbitrary Shu officer: it places the objective inside the recommended progression.
He Fei: Zhang Liao and Sun Quan
Both He Fei checks belong to a Wu Musou Mode campaign. Defeat Zhang Liao, and make Cao Cao retreat to satisfy Sun Quan’s condition. Gan Ning’s campaign is recommended because it reaches this battle while also covering other Wu objectives.
Fan Castle: Lu Meng
Complete Fan Castle with Lu Meng alive. Monitor his health and rescue him when the battle flow puts him at risk. A stage clear after his defeat does not satisfy the requirement.
Wu District Conquest: Taishi Ci
Recruit Taishi Ci by defeating Liu Yong at Wu District Conquest. The objective is a recruitment event, not simply a campaign completion, so confirm that the event occurs before ending the battle.

Meng Huo appears seven times. Defeat him at all seven appearances, then defeat Zhurong during the Nanman Campaign before finishing the stage. Do not rush to the final objective after the first Meng Huo encounter; missing one appearance prevents the reported unlock.
How to unlock Ziluan, Nuwa and Fuxi
Ziluan
Clear Musou Mode once with any officer. The route reports Ziluan after the first Xiahou Dun campaign, so there is no reason to create a separate run for this character.
Nuwa
Nuwa requires four specific Musou Mode clears:
- Complete Musou Mode as Da Qiao.
- Complete Musou Mode as Xiao Qiao.
- Complete Musou Mode as Sun Shangxiang.
- Complete Musou Mode as Zhen Ji.
The six-run plan supplies Da Qiao and Zhen Ji. After Xiao Qiao and Sun Shangxiang are available, finish their campaigns deliberately; Free Mode victories do not substitute for these clears.
This means Nuwa takes two additional named campaigns beyond the six-run route, assuming the listed Da Qiao and Zhen Ji clears are complete. Unlock Xiao Qiao through a Musou Mode clear as Zhou Yu or Da Qiao, then use Xiao Qiao for her own required campaign. Sun Shangxiang is already in the starting roster, so she can be selected for the other remaining clear. The route guide’s five-extra-run estimate for the two secret characters also includes Fuxi’s three named campaigns.
Fuxi
Fuxi requires three named clears:
- Complete Musou Mode as Cao Cao.
- Complete Musou Mode as Liu Bei.
- Complete Musou Mode as Sun Jian.
The route unlocks Cao Cao and Sun Jian during the faction progression, but each still needs a completed Musou Mode campaign for Fuxi’s requirement. Liu Bei is reported as available after the Zhuge Liang run, so use a separate Liu Bei campaign if the game has not already credited that clear.
Allow three extra campaigns for Fuxi unless one of the required named campaigns has already been completed during your route. Combined with the two remaining Nuwa clears, GuideLVL’s estimate is six initial faction runs plus five additional character runs. It is an optimized plan for the reported requirements, not an official guaranteed total: missed battle objectives or different unlock conditions may mean you need to replay a stage or adjust your sequence.

Use this checklist to verify that you have covered the whole reported roster without counting a character twice:
- Starting: Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Xiahou Dun, Dian Wei, Zhang He, Zhou Yu, Sun Shangxiang and Huang Gai.
- Wei progression: Xu Zhu, Zhen Ji, Sima Yi, Cao Cao, Xu Huang, Xiahou Yuan and Zhang Liao.
- Shu progression: Zhuge Liang, Ma Chao, Wei Yan, Pang Tong, Meng Huo, Zhurong, Jiang Wei, Liu Bei and Huang Zhong.
- Wu progression: Gan Ning, Lu Xun, Da Qiao, Sun Quan, Lu Meng, Taishi Ci, Xiao Qiao, Sun Jian and Sun Ce.
- Battle and secret unlocks: Zhang Jiao, Diao Chan, Lu Bu, Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao, Ziluan, Nuwa and Fuxi.
Nintendo’s 2026 product description calls the cast “more than 40 officers.” The route above includes every officer and condition named in the current guides, including officers that appear as campaign rewards rather than in the starting roster. The publisher also describes Xtreme Legends as adding stories for seven officers; that story count is separate from the number of playable officers and should not be mistaken for a complete unlock checklist.
When an unlock does not appear
Check the mode and save state
Confirm that the battle was completed inside Musou Mode and that the campaign was saved after the results screen. A Free Mode replay can reproduce the battle but does not count toward the reported campaign-clear requirements.
Recheck the exact event condition
For event-gated officers, verify the action rather than assuming the stage clear was enough: all three Yellow Turban officers for Zhang Jiao; both named defeats and 1,000 KOs at Hu Lao Gate; the Yan Liang and Wen Chou timing at Guan Du; Pang Tong’s survival; all seven Meng Huo appearances; and Lu Meng’s survival at Fan Castle.
Account for conflicting guide versions
Destructoid’s broad unlock table agrees with many of these requirements but differs on some eligibility details, particularly Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi. The optimized route here follows GuideLVL’s more specific conditions. If your result differs, check the in-game officer unlock records and the newest available guide rather than combining conditions from both tables. Nintendo’s product page confirms the remaster’s roster framing and included Xtreme Legends content, but it does not publish a full character-by-character unlock checklist.
Edition and platform notes
The remaster is listed for Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam. Steam lists a Digital Deluxe Edition and notes that costumes, items and weapons can be changed in preparation menus. None of the unlocks in this guide requires a separate accessory or add-on. Retailer stock, regional pricing and edition availability can change, so check the store listing for your region before purchasing.

Those edition details are separate from character progression: changing costumes, items or weapons in the preparation menu is not listed as a requirement for any officer. The unlock route concerns campaign clears and battle actions, not ownership of a deluxe edition or a particular piece of equipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to unlock every character?
Follow the six-run faction route: Xiahou Dun, Zhen Ji, Zhao Yun, Gan Ning, Da Qiao and Zhuge Liang. Complete the named stage objectives during those campaigns. Then add the remaining character-specific clears for Nuwa and Fuxi: the route estimates five additional campaigns in total.
Do Free Mode battles or a higher difficulty count for unlocks?
GuideLVL reports that Free Mode does not count for Musou Mode campaign-clear requirements, while difficulty does not affect eligibility. Use Musou Mode for progression and make sure you finish and save the campaign.
How do I unlock Lu Bu?
At Hu Lao Gate, reach 1,000 KOs. The same battle can also satisfy Diao Chan’s defeat condition and Dong Zhuo’s requirement if you defeat both Diao Chan and Lu Bu before completing the stage.

How do I unlock Nuwa and Fuxi?
Nuwa requires Musou Mode clears as Da Qiao, Xiao Qiao, Sun Shangxiang and Zhen Ji. Fuxi requires clears as Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Jian. These requirements are campaigns completed as those officers, not merely unlocking the officers.
Why might my Zhuge Liang or Sima Yi unlock differ from this guide?
Current guides disagree on some eligibility details. This article follows GuideLVL’s more specific conditions: Zhuge Liang requires a Shu clear other than Zhang Fei or Pang Tong, and Sima Yi requires a Wei officer other than Dian Wei, Zhang Liao or Zhen Ji. Check the in-game unlock records if your result differs.
Do I need the Digital Deluxe Edition or an add-on to unlock officers?
No separate accessory or add-on is required by the reported unlock conditions. Steam’s listing notes that costumes, items and weapons can be changed in preparation menus; those customization options are not listed as character unlock requirements.
The Bottom Line
For the regular roster, complete two Musou Mode campaigns per faction and use the recommended officers to cover the event-gated battles along the way. Finish each objective before ending its stage, especially the Hu Lao Gate checks, Pang Tong’s survival, the seven Meng Huo encounters and Lu Meng’s survival. Then complete the named campaigns required for Nuwa and Fuxi; an officer being unlocked is not the same as clearing Musou Mode as that officer.
